Don't really play this anymore, but I was talking yesterday with my brother-in-law who is still quite active (along with my sister), and apparently the biggest complaint people have about the level cap is that they're all going to have to level ninja again.
Something about that is just hilarious to me. It's such an easy class to level. Relatively speaking of course, as this is still FFXI.
Ninja just takes time and is a pretty boring job unless you're willing to throw piles and piles of gil at it (literally), which most people who are just leveling it for subs aren't. It will also suck because everyone will be trying to level it at the same time.
I'd still hold out and see what the mechanics are for getting above 75 before fretting though, whatever they put in might deemphasize shadows or uncontrolled TP spam. Other subs might also sneak in as more desireable: I know I'll have to look pretty hard at /mnk again for my PUP and /dnc offers haste samba and reverse flourish. Even /blu might offer some interesting potential.
Edit: Unrelated:
Tried MMM for the first time last night. My group of 3 has just started so we were pretty limited in our options. We beat it 2/3 times, the last attempt we had something like 12 water elementals that just took too long to bring down. So far it seems like fun but very slow exp.
Question though, if I do a maze alone rather than with 3, will the number of mobs scale down? My group can't go every day and while I could easily solo the mobs, it would take far too long. Do I just have to wait for a weakness or similar rune to drop to do it on my own?

A quick tip to those needing break 1:
Please stand back. Onee of the fights came a little closer than I would have liked when Kings got caught in an AOE and dropped to the yellow in HP. Went from fighting 1 to fighting 4 when the rest of the skeletons agroed. Benediction for the win though.

This reminds me of powerleveling a friends monk in gusgen mines a long time ago. Unfortunately I didn't have Benediction for him. I think he spent more time face down then leveling, though he gained more exp then he lost. After the first time he died he would never stay put while waiting for res sickness and when it wore off it felt like every skeleton in the zone would be on him.

Doesn't deodorize prevent bloodagro? Or was he attacking things while being PLed and rez sick?

He was attacking things and just messing around, this was my best friend and we were laning so it wasn't a serious thing, he didn't care how much time he spent in the dirt. It was just hilarious how much time he spent face down. He just started playing again since I will be starting next month and he is totally afraid of gusgen mines which is awesome.

I really enjoyed Gusgen mines when I was leveling BST, this was before exp rings and the MPK patches though. It might be even nicer now. But man was I psyched getting a chain 5 for 500+ exp solo. I'm really excited to level BST some more, I have been itching to see how garliage is nowadays.
Hmm you're right, although I have distinct memories of deoderize spam back in the dunes years ago when people were huddled on the beach camps at night.

What dipshit at SE thought it was a good idea to take an area that is level 30 and below, drop a Cavernous Maw in it and then make the enemies on the other side 60's and 70's?
Particularly when those areas are the FIRST areas you have to go to in the expansion.
Fake Edit: You are gonna piss yourself trying to get to San d'Oria.
The enemies there range from like 40 to 75.
Same with Batallia and Rolanberry.
I didn't have any problems in Sarumauge or Rolanberry, just Batallia.
I had the misfortune of coming out of the cutscene in Sarumauge so I had to go at least get Batallia or Rolanberry in order to get back into the past without having to go through garliage. Rolanberry, no problem. The Maw is just outside of the gate.
There were like a dozen 70some odd goblins in the way of the one in Batallia.
Maybe I just went the wrong way.
I'll just be more careful next time, use oils and whatnot. I just wasn't expecting it.
I still say it's a piss poor idea to have that wildy varying mob levels in a single zone though.
EDIT: Unrelated I gave Hantileion my egg from Chocobos on the Loose and began raising my chocobo! In about a month I'll have a whistle woo!
Hrm, the ffxicyclopedia page Here says that it dumps you out at random; down in the additional info and in the normal walkthrough points out that if you get the Sauromugue one to not jump off the cliff.
Doesn't matter I suppose since either way that's what I got.
EDIT: Though the cutscene seems to only take place in Sauromugue so...whatever.
Just wanted to pop in and say that I just had the most fun night of playing this for the past 3 weeks.
Finally managed to prove to my roommate that parties can work well and be fun (every dunes attempt I made with him usually failed). We played for 6 hours straight, with a relatively consistent group of people.
It was awesome to see a group figure out how to work together, tackle things like a team, and have the two veterans helping out the 3 new players. Also, I saw something completely foreign to me that I really admired: whenever someone left, they made sure they had a replacement player first!
My roommate got invited to a random linkshell when he first signed up (simply for telling a few jokes with on the ship to selbina, haha), and when I told him to ask for help getting subjob items, he was initially reluctant. Eventually he did, and had 3 people come to help. After getting the items, he came to our party. An hour or so later, one of them comes back to check on him - and when she saw that we weren't doing so great (we had a rough start with only the newest player being our primary healer) she stuck around and healed for us for a very long time.
I swear I played with the nicest people in the world last night, or this is Karma for a really crappy week of parties, lol.
I am even more sold on this game now, simply for the community!
No biggie. Mee Deggi doesn't seemed camped at all lately, and he's super easy to get to.
I could definitely see how it could get old though; not really worse than camping Lizzy or Valk Emp, both which I've done successfully in the past.
At least the placeholders and the maggots drop some decent things to sell.
I think next time I go in I'll just sub BST or RNG even though they're level one, for the wide scan. I had just been killing every Interrogator/Drummer because I couldn't tell which was the actual placeholder.
really? Jeez I can remember a time when Mee Deggi was camped by no less than 10 bots, 4 live gil sellers (probably manning the bots), and 2 real players.

Well the O.Kote drop is EX now so it limits it only to players that actually need it, and I don't think its valuable enough for people to try and sell the claim.

A lot of those previously valuable items that were really heavily camped by RMTs aren't anymore because they're EX.
You'll still see folks camping them, but it's not even remotely like it was. I didn't see anyone near Mee last night or this morning. When i camped Lizzy/Emp last fall it was the same deal. There was usually one or two people looking for lizzy also, if even that (often there were none), but I was usually the only one there for the Emp.
So when exactly is it safe to resub, tomorrow or the second? I don't want to get double billed.
Well it's probably safe now since its already April 1 in Japan, but you could wait till tomorrow to be absolutely sure.

So I decided to start working on fishing. So I bought a pole. For 4thousand gil. And then it broke. And then I found out that they drop off goblins.
/facepalm
It's basically not worth fishing until you can get a halycon and/or composite rod, and then you can only really get to the mid 50s before you need a Lu's.
Check out GreatBlue and FinalFishing for a good database of what fish will bite what bait in what areas and which rods are safe.
If you are really into fishing, consider leveling cooking or woodworking at the same time to maximize profits. Getting alch up is also useful but generally less so.
(Fishing is my primary gil maker and I had a 90+ fisher originally [lost char] and now am back to 65 on my new character. I've made over 7 million gil so far on the new char, probably closer to 10 million. All but 2 million of it has been eaten by my Lu and Puppet though :-/. It's not the fastest method of farming, but it's steady and stable and you can generally do something more interesting at the same time.)

I totally disagree. If you don't want to spend 15k on a rod, the NPC vendors have cheap disposable ones available for about 60 gil. If you manage to fish up even a single moat carp with it before it breaks, you can buy five more.

And you've wasted a lot of time each break and a lot of inventory space to hold the spare rods. It also blocks you from using lures for fish, which is the way you want to go as soon as you cap on moats (and getting to 11 is pretty fast). Moat carp are the absolute worst profit fish, I've never understood people's fascination with them.
Anyway, there's really no reason you shouldn't be able to afford a real rod by level 20, and prior to that you are severely limited in the number of fish you can pull up a day (20 I think).
Edit: That said, there is nothing stopping one from using the trash rods, just as there is nothing stopping one from mining without basic ingot making ability or farming without TH1+. It will just be less efficient and overall limit the amount of gil one can make in a given period of time. With fishing, if you intend to go for the real profit fish, you will certainly need the better rods anyway, so using anything else is just deferring that inevitable purchase for very little advantage.

The first profit fish you can catch that sells better than moat carp are Nebimonites, and those can only be caught on the ferry or in sea serpent grotto.
Almost every other fish in that zone is uncatchable at skill level 27, which is what Nebimonites cap out at. Only Bastore Sardines and Quuis, which sell for less than moat carp. You want to talk about wasted time, talk about fishing on the ferry at too low a skill level; or job level, for that mater.
For skill, yeah, you cap out moat carp pretty quick. For profit, you won't find anything better in gil per fish per hour than moat carp until well into the 30s for fishing skill.
Further Edit: And if you use lures in an area that has fish that can break your line (not your pole, your line) then you diverse to lose all that gil.

Shall shells cap at 53. They are harder to catch even than cone calamari.
Plus, they are 7500 for a stack of 12 compared to 5k for a stack of 12 moat carp, which are no-risk fish to catch.
