So, any tips on how I can go about searching for people for a level sync party in the dunes? Do I just search for people in the general area or is there a better search option?
one other question. I'm honestly not sure what her laptop has in it. I know she can run WoW just fine but its just a $500-$600 walmart laptop from this year.
I know FFXI is 3 years older than WoW so should she be able to play it no problem if she can run WoW just fine?

FFXI is about two years older than WoW. Unlike WoW, FFXI was designed with the PS2 in mind. So if she can play WoW, she should be able to play FFXI. If she has an apple/mac however, she won't be able to play FFXI.
XI isn't optimized at all for the PC however, so it doesn't run as well as you'd expect for an older game.
It could just be nostalgia on my part, but regardless of the age of the engine, I love the graphics, style, and design in XI. I have a system that I can run it at an extremely high resolution, which helps, but even at a lower resolution, like on the 360, I still think it looks great.
Anyway, yeah, if your system is even somewhat recent it will run the game just fine. You don't need to regedit to turn the textures up to 2048x2048 like I do. It will look perfectly fine lower.
Just don't expect Crysis or something.
I personally recommend playing with a controller (I use a wireless playstation 2 controller with a USB adapter I got ages ago, but any dual analog PC controller works perfectly fine), as I feel it is the far superior way to play, but there are those here who claim KBAM is the best. Just be aware the UI is very odd to get used to with a KBAM; but it can be adjusted to. Just don't expect the "standard" wow-like UI you see in most MMO's.
Yeah. I prefer Keyboard and Mouse, but I switch it to compressed mode (in the config options in the menu) which makes it feel a little more natural.

well just got the ultimate collection, installing all the shit now.
Hopefully all the updates won't take too long >.< and just playing with the keyboard will be nice since i'm on a laptop.
I would second controller being the way to go, I use a PS2 controller also but I hear you can make a PS3 controller work with the charging cord and the right software.
Goooooooooooood the playonline sign up process is so abysmal... will they be dropping this with 14? I had to enter three different fucking credit cards before it would take one >.<
Also I might have to try the PS3 controller if it works

Here are a couple of links for the PS3 controller, I have not tried this myself but its supposed to be not that hard to do although I hear it is a pain in vista and windows 7 because you have to boot your computer a certain way every time you want to use it.

/sea all X-Y inv
Replace X and Y with the lowest and highest levels you want, respectively
This will return everyone on the server in that level range with their party flag up

Some people might not want to level sync that low, others might be looking for a group for a mission or something like that
I took the dive, and am now patching, hopefully I can choose Carby ( don't see any reason why I can't )
I'll probably be a Hume, and start out in Windy.
So pressing "-" just causes the game to put - in the chat box, and im on my macbook pro so I don't have a numpad key to get into the config
Is there any other way to switch it to compact?
I know for PC, if you click the middle mouse button it will open the menu. I don't know any other way to do that. I do know you can change the keyboard setting to compact with makes moving so much easier. You use w,a,s,d

Well, just one more item for the subjob quest... damselfly worm... Rarr... killed 20 or so yesterday to no avail, though I think my new lv 40 friend was stifling the drop percentage while he was helping me.
So after reading some of the FFXIclopedia, if I start a Hume in Bastock to get the ring, do I immediately have the chance to change allegiance? If I do, would I lose the ring?

I'm pretty sure you keep it, but switching nations is expensive (especially if you're in 3rd place, and Bastock is called Lastock for a reason ;P).
I'm 80% sure you can buy the ring as a CP item later if you want though, I think it just costs more for nonBastok citizens. Honestly you'll outgrow it quickly and most jobs wouldn't even use the stats.
That said there's nothing inherently wrong with being a Bastok citizen, other than that it is Bastok.

I'm just lost as to what i want to do! I'm not sure if I want to start as a MNK, WAR, or BLM =P
Hehe I'm just horribly bored at work (boss is in Japan, so slow week :P)
Any idea what job you want to end up as for your "main" one? Or what role / whether you want to be mostly party or solo?

Yes, you can buy the rings with CP. They're Rank 3 for 4000 CP.
After dying just now trying to kill the stupid leeches for the NIN quest I'm firmly convinced that I will level PLD instead of SAM. I shouldn't have had any problems as a 50 WAR/SAM. The first leech went down with one strike and a crit Sturmwind (used mighty strikes before Sturmwind). The second leech went down pretty quickly too; finished it off with another Sturmwind though in retrospect I should have saved it for the third. The third...well after missing six times in a row then it draining the rest of the TP I had, I was out of options. So frustrating.
I'm going to keep my SAM gear and try to get some of the SAM gear from NM's as I go along but it's incredibly infuriating to sit there and watch yourself die with absolutely no recourse, unless you want to drop a ton of money on pots all the time. I can deal with not being the "leet" deeps, to have a more enjoyable solo experience and whatnot.
The only sad thing is I have SAM at 30 whereas my PLD is only 15.
Grabbing double attack with your SAM (from WAR sj, of course) and TP store+bajillion as a higher level SAM will help out with the problem you just had. Also, there are very, very few monsters that can tank your TP like a leech can.
I wouldn't give up on SAM unless you are itching to tank.
I enjoy tanking enough. It's just all I do in WoW (which I only play for weekend ICC10's anymore), so I thought I could use a break from it.
I really enjoy SAM, don't get me wrong, it has a lot of cool options and the 2hr is glorious. I will level it too, but I'm just going to focus on PLD for the time being because while I plan on partying when I can, the last week or so has shown me that while I can log on and play, I haven't been able to really have a chunk of time to get into a PT without being a dick.
I know soloing on a PLD will be slower but ah well.
EDIT: Hah, and I sold all my old PLD gear when I resubbed this time too. At least it's low level crap that is cheap.
EDIT EDIT: Also it's a matter of wanting something that will be able to stand up to somewhat higher level questing and NM camping better than a pure melee job can.
Part of it is just feeling like a douche all the time praying for Bri to get on to help me with yet another quest. You just don't see WAR or SAMs going and helping folks with quests and whatnot often. You do see WHM's, RDMs and PLDs, because they can survive things other jobs just can't. That and watching a PLD use vorpal sword is just *glee*
EDIT EDIT EDIT: Only semi-related it sure is easy to get an xp buffer these days. I've died so many times at 50, if I couldnt' just hop into rolanberry and kill 5 ochus and get 1k xp in 10 minutes, I'd be down to 48 by now.
THF is a good sub for DRK primarily because of sneak attack.
You can do WAR fine with DRK but you will probably be constantly pulling hate and DRK can't take a lot of damage.
I don't think BLM is a wonderful sub for DRK because despite the increased MP and INT from the sub, you're losing any benefit to the super strong melee abilities you have.
EDIT: I'd suggest leveling WAR > 15, THF/WAR > 30 (or 37, but the cap will be increased soon anyway), then DRK/WAR till 30 then swap to THF for Sneak Attack at 30.
But you'd be just as fine with WAR as your sub. Just up to you.
EDIT EDIT: We'll get you a LS pearl soon. I'm not personally headed toward windy for anything soon but Bri likes to log on then afk for 9 hours at a time so he can probably get one to ya :P
I'm thinking I want to end up with Dark Knight, BLM, BLM or SUM, so.. it looks like DD or DD/Support for me.
I think I feel safest with that.
So what do you think? Start with MNK till 18, then War to 30, then DRK ?
Yeah if you want to do DRK I would do that level progression. I would probably take WAR to all the way to 37 before going drk though; every melee job needs it anyway and you may as well get it out of the way when you've got all the gear and macros and such.
Just a heads up, SMNs are often asked to party more for their healing than their summons. This may have changed somewhat with their new "buff while the pet is out" thing, but SMNs are so rare to party with. Also getting the summons is tricky without a high level (they've got the level 20 quests, but you can really only make one attempt at one avatar every 2 hours at best, and still don't get some of the best summons). Also BLM's tend not to be desired in (traditional) higher level parties; they tend to solo or level sync down. They are very useful for the various nonleveling events though.
You listed BLM twice, was one of them supposed to be Blue Mage? Because they are also a very fun DD/Support job that would fit your theme. Sort of like a DRK but tilted more toward spells. Decent small group tanks too. /WAR is, unsurprisingly, a good sub job for them too, so your progression for DRK would work well.
Edit: @TDWH well DRK/THF works but it takes until really level 60. Sneak attack alone, if anything, will just cause him to pull hate more since its such a huge spike. At 60 he gets Trick Attack to take care of it. With a good tank it shouldn't really be an issue anyway these days, you can always stall your weapon skill until the mob is at lowish life.
Also I would recommend THF/MNK until viper bite, since combo is so much stronger than the lowbie dagger skills. THF/WAR until then also works with Fast Blade of course, but its not quite as good.
