I have the same problem. Loved the Black Isle stuff when it came out... but the rules are just so old and crummy compared to 3.x
While the 3.5 ruleset is certainly superior from a pen and paper standpoint, it doesn't really factor in so much to the more controlled environment of BG2.
The only bitch is that pre 3.5 multiclassing suuuuuuuucks.
The ruleset of BG2 is, to put it mildly, a mess. It seems to be made using the 2ed. rules, mixing in a very early draft of the new 3.0. All kind of brokenness ensues, especially when characters get to high level. It can also be confusing. Basic things to remember:
AC starts at 10 and goes down. The lower your AC, the better.
Saves: The lower the number the better.
Thac0: To hit AC 0. The lower this number the better.
Primary stats: The higher the better.
Casting Time: The lower the number the better.
Number of attacks: The higher this number the better.
I haven't really played 2ed, but as a basic system, 3.5 isn't to bad really. The main shame is still the fighter/caster disparity. Even with Tome of Battle, by level 11-13 casters almost always will pull ahead. There are other issues too ,so, so many books, so many options, and so many ways to break the game, many weird things to break the game monetary system. (buy a cow for ~10g, flesh to salt a cow and make 10-15k gold selling the salt RAW).

Okay, you plus the BG2 Nostalgia thread have twisted my arm, I guess I'll have to pick up NWN2. Be sure to check your mail for your royalty check from Obsidian.
Heh. Keep in mind though that it is short. From start to finish I took about 35 hours to complete it, and that's including dawdling around doing most of the sidequests. Also, be prepared to either love or hate the majority of your party members.
And for the love of god, turn off team AOE damage if you pick up Qara and don't control her. Trust me.
How could you not love those characters. :P Almost all of them were fucking crazy in some way.
NWN 2 was good and while playing the game it reminded me a lot of Baldur's Gate. I'm not actually sure why. Maybe it was because you had an actual party and all the characters had a distinct personality. If only you could control your whole party ala Baldur's Gate.
Troika and their Temple of Elemental Evil was a disappointment for me. I still think, bugs aside, if they had multiplayer support and the ability to create your own Modules then ToEE would have rocked hard.
For now it looks like the good ol' days of CRPGs are gone. Maybe we'll get ourselves a Second Renaissance of CRPGs and turn based tactical strategy games in the future.

No, it;s just 2nd ed with a lot of the expansion books incorporated. Pretty much everything in 3rd ed can be found in a 2nd ed expansion somewhere.
So I picked this game up a while ago and never really played past the starting dungeon. So I installed it last night and made it out into the main city. And I must say I'm actually enjoying myself. Although my urge to kill snooty npcs has carried over from Baldur's Gate 1. I made a backup save just so I could slaughter everyone in the high class Inn.

That shouldn't break the monetary system if your DM is smart, since he'd realize that the players are not the only one's who'd have thought of that, and likely, salt wouldn't be worth all that much thanks to people transmuting cows.

You can't break a tabletop RPG unless your DM is missing chromosomes.
You neglected to criticize D&D for having too many retarded books to waste money on. I love D&D, but can't take people who spend $500 on the "rules" seriously.

Not really, no. I recall there being fairly specific mention in interviews and advertising about BGII incorporating some of the new ideas from 3rd edition (like the monk, sorc, and barbarian being base classes), while having lots of 2E optional stuff integrated as well. And yes, it was definitely a mess, especially the monk (who was so stupidly overpowered it wasn't even funny)

What it did was put some precedence on the optional rules that would migrate into 3E core. Ruins of Myth Drannor was the first game to include actual 3E mechanics.

You're grossly oversimplifying. While it's not so true anymore, with the "rule book for every single thing you can do" the campaign setting books themselves are still totally great.
You can't say that the difference between a Ravenloft campaign setting and a Forgotten Realms campaign setting is "semi-subtle."
Now, those class specific guide books? Fuck those.

My last playthrough Minsc got a critical hit with the undead kiling mace while in berserk mode to protect him from imprisonment. In bg2, critical hits go through all protections and guarantee the firing of the special ability of whatever weapon you are carrying. Is that suppose to happen in adnd pen and paper rules? It's kind of broken for kensai with the stunning katana.

I've never gotten all the Jaheira hate. She's nowhere near as annoying as Aerie, and she's actually a pretty good character. Stick a shield and some armor on her, then load her up with anti-mage/healing spells, or throw her in some awesome plate and give her either that spear out of the graveyard, or the one from the IWD merchant and she's a melee monster who can heal herself.
Plus she has the best battlecry in the game.

I'm an extremist. She's a neutral. No matter what class I take or what I do, she's going to bitch at me, my party, and everything else for being too good/bad. I dislike dissenters. Stripped naked and exiled for her.
I actually kept her my first ever playthrough, back when it wasn't annoying me out of sheer repetition. Then I made my evil kensai, and got half way through the game before she said that damn line and I took everything off her, turned her to stone and shattered her.

Most players will wind up really good or really evil in terms of reputation. That leads to having to hear Jaheira's complaining lines A LOT. Ditto with Anomen until his side quest resolves. Jan complains too, but only in a way tangentially related so it's not as annoying. That's really the crux of it for most players I think, she's too damn good at complaining even if she is useful in combat. I kept her around in my first game even though she wasn't happy alignment wise. It was . . . odd to have her suddenly coming onto me in ToB when they had fixed her romance scripting.

Just keep going maybe? It probably won't be long before you'll probably find some better ToB equipment for her. Just try to keep her out of any fights, letting her cast instead of run ahead and hit things with a mace. And don't forget to check the bag of holding you start ToB with. It won't have her equipment in it, but it should have some nice stuff that may help.

So, wow. I just installed this game for the 3rd time, but have only made it past the first dungeon this time. Thats right, I've been missing out on the goodness that is BG2 for years now because of the nausea that the first dungeon caused me. Now I'm loving the game so much I think I've got 4+ more playthroughs already planned. I'm so excited about the BOTH the solo challenges and the cool parties that I can't decide what I want to do first.
Right now I'm running through the game with a good aligned party led by my Monk. I gave Minsc the Flail of Ages and a Mace of Disruption +1 (didnt know you could upgrade it till after I had gone past that point). I've got Kaldorn (I think thats him... the Inquisitor) too, but he's window dressing unless I'm fighting a mage, then its True Vision + Dispel Magic = GG. Minsc and the Monk *destroy* everything they look at. I picked up Aerie and Nalia as my casters. Though I'm really starting to wish I had taken Anomen instead of Aerie, from what I've read in this thread. The idea of having a turn undead ability thats useful sounds nice.
Oh, and not only is Minsc the roughest guy in my party right now (I think my Monk at level 15 is *just* starting to overtake him in dmg and surivivability), but he is too cool for words. Aerie, will you be my new witch? I love the one liners he puts out, and his dialog. Everything about Minsc makes it hard to imagine a BG2 playthrough without him. Easily the most memorable character in my party right now.
I also think I regret kicking Jaheira out from what you guys are saying about Insect Swarm. But she was annoying so meh.
I know as soon as I beat this game I'm going to go right back through and do it again solo, probably with the level caps removed. I'm debating between a Kensai/Mage or a Sorcerer. I took a break from my non-stop Monk (almost 3 days straight) to try a solo mage for 2-3 hours and see how he did. Surprisingly well, even with virtually no equipment and no planning. Stone Skin, Mirror Image, Summon Skeleton, Magic Missile, Flame Arrow and Skull Trap can handle just about anything. Though I do think its pretty lame that I have to stop and rest after every fight. I know the Kensai/Mage is probably stronger.... but I *love* the idea of RP'ing the Child of Bhaal, alone against the world, singularly unique in my class. It just seems cooler when I know there are no others out there like me (ie, no other Monks, Sorcerers, etc). Like the blood of Bhaal is what makes me able to cast spells innately, instead of my class, and THATS why I'm a sorcerer.
Besides, Bracers of AC 3, 19 Dex, Staff of Curing, ROP+1, Sewers Cloak is a -5AC an hour out of the first dungeon. At least thats the plan when I redo the sorcerer. Right now he's more like 4 AC ^^. Throw in a Blur and Imp Invis and youre looking at a -12AC on top of a Mirror Image and Stoneskin. Swing at me all day guy, it ain't gonna help. Can get another 3 points of AC from Ring of Gaxx, Dusty Rose Stone (it says its not for mages, but so does the Pearly White Stone and I wear that one), and Ring of Earth Control.
Oh, and whats the deal with the Amulet of Power + Robes of Vecca combo? I keep hearing that if you use those two items you can belt out the 5 and under casting time spells non-stop, till youre empty. But I gave them to Aerie and she was still casting spells 1 every 6 seconds. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding. Is that only true when you do Time Stop + Imp Alacracity + Robes of Veccna + Amulet of Power?
Also, not that I think I'm going to play a Kensai/Mage, but some of the weapon combos I've been kicking around my head are driving me nuts. Deciding which skill to drop 5 points of proficiency in I mean. Like the Bastard Sword from ToB that drains life is probably the best weapon a solo guy could have, but its like the only good Bastard Sword in the game so its probably too long to wait for. Katanas really dont have that much going on for them. Dak'kons is good as an off hand for the AC and spells I suppose, but they dont got jack in SoA that will take out Kangaxx. Long Swords got lots of options, including a sword that takes off 2 ac and 15% magic resist every time it hits, but thats not till ToB. The Flail of Ages is amazing and easy to get, but thats basically it. Still, d6+16dmg, +5tohit, Free Action, 5%MR, 33% to slow which takes off 4 from their ac and thaco is absolutely godly.
Wondering what everyone else would pick.
Anyways, I love this game.

Wow.

And am I the only one who liked Aerie? She was so cute. I actually liked all the romantic interest girls in the game.
And this thread inspired me to change my avatar+sig in to the logos of the greatest game dev ever.
u giys? This is whats stopping me from starting Throne of Bhaal
Only tryhard badguys use Slayer, m I right.
I want to finish my tob game now. Maybe I should hunt for some inventory mods.
Wondering what everyone else would pick.
Anyways, I love this game.
