Have any of you done long distance BG2 multiplayer? How do I get this shit working?

Nope, and you have my best wishes. Thats going to be a nightmare to set up.

Only way I've ever done it is LAN, and it wasn't too much fun. I have most of the game memorized and wanted to go fast, my friend hadn't played all that much, and wanted to go slower.

I'm about to start another run of Baldurs Gate 2 and the Throne of Bhaal. Any suggestions for what character class to go with? I've only beaten the series once and that was with a monk, and I loved it.

Actually in the The Grand History of the Realms (which is just a giant timeline) it lists the events of the Baldur's Gate novels. So it part of FR canon or so I presume. Whether it makes it into any other material is up in the air though.

Except that the worst Black Isle title, IWD 1, was still better than anything Obsidian has given us.

Why is Icewind Dale considered less of a game than its other RPG siblings?
(Not meaning to derail the BG2 topic, but since the game is cut from the same cloth as the BG series..)

Yeah, I've seen that timeline, and yes the event is listed. I can only assume that, because there's never any mention of the Bhaalspawn becoming a god in the canon fiction, that the official canon ending of the game means your character chooses to remain mortal. Which sucks, because I sure as hell didn't choose that :)

The IWD games are more like tactical challenges than great rpg's. I loved me some IWD2, but I wouldn't put it in the realm of BGII because there's almost zero character development, and what does happen is the bad guys, and even that mostly sucks.

Well, for one, it didn't have much of a plot, and it didn't have the same non-linearity or NPC interaction that BG did. It also has some of the same gameplay problems as BG 1 - i.e. fighting in small corridors is a complete nightmare. I haven't played IWD 2 despite owning it, but I've heard it's a lot better.

I played it online with a guy in the UK (I'm in Canada) using Gamespy. It worked fine, but we didn't get very far, as we'd both played it to completion several times. We were mostly just looking for any multiplayer game we'd both want to play that we both had.

I'm having a hell of a time trying not to die in the graveyard crypt that Korgan gave the quest for the book. I'm in that egyptian looking room where zombies and skelly warriors pop out. Getting my ass kicked. Trying to thin out the room by taking down one target then leaving to heal. Rinse and repeat but there's got to be a better way! Am I too low lvl to trying to take them on? Need better gear? Im broke so not sure what's available early in the game anyway. My inquisitor needs a hand eheh. My party is made up of Jahiera, Minsc, Yoshimo, Aerie and Korgan. I wonder if I borked my Inquisitor by not putting any points in Dex?

For what Icewind Dale was, I thought it was fantastic. The story was made a little better than what it was by great presentation and artwork. And even though it was more action than RPG, I enjoyed the many qualities it shares with the other more traditional character and story driven RPGs like the BG series. The music score for Icewind Dale alone, won me over actually.

Just go in prepared and you should be fine, unless you are vastly under leveled. It looks like you don't have much in terms of fire power, Aerie is a shitty mage, compensate by either dropping her and grab a real mage like Edwin or load up on fireball wands.

It looks like your party is mostly a melee group, try to park everybody except the strongest character outside of the room, if I remember correctly it's that big spider web area. With your strongest character, go in, get the attention of a few of the bad guys, wait by the entrance until they are almost at you then run out. They will follow you and come out to the spider web area, now you pound them into oblivion with Minsc and Korgan and everybody else. Repeat for the entire place until they are all dead.

Is there some special trick to having fun playing as a thief class? Every time I try one out, I always feel like I got stuck with a dumpy character whose sole purpose is only to pick locks, find traps and fight poorly, which are actions I'd rather have delegated to a side character. Also, traps are for pussies.

    Lies.

Personally, there are two ways for thieves to go; swashbucklers or fighter/thieves. Vanilla thieves just don't have enough going for them when compared to some of the bonuses you have on their alternatives, bounty hunters get nerfed by the end of Shadows of Amn (when even normal thieves start getting special traps), and assassins have a fantastic back-stab modifier but a shitty accuracy.

Swashbucklers are like a weird variety of tank. They can do almost everything a normal thief can do, fight slightly better (but not quite as good as a normal fighter - though on the plus side they level up about twice as quickly), and, most importantly, have the AC of a wasp on speed. By the end of the game, with full dexterity and use any item, it's quite possible to get a swashbuckler's AC down to ridiculously low numbers. The loss of backstab means they play differently to other thief classes, but they do make up for it.

Fighter/thieves are, with the right build, potentially the best fighters in the game. A multi-class gets the huge benefit of being able to choose both thief and fighter powers in Throne of Bhaal, leading to crazy shit like someone wielding Carsomyr attacking using greater whirlwind with a 5x multiplier to their damage. Dual class has the advantages of beefing up your thief's fighting power, and if you want to start gaining thief levels quickly you can dual class to it at pretty much the start of BG2. I've said it before in this thread, but Kensai/thief is, in my opinion, the best combat-orientated character in the game.

Just remember, backstab is your friend. Nothing like slaughtering an entire dungeon of mind-flayers by sneaking around and dismembering them from behind.

Ring of Air (invisibility once per day), Ring of Invisbility x2 (once per day), Cloak of non-detection (immune to true sigth etc), x10 invisbility potions, ring of free movement/or other item like boots, best damage wise weapon you can get (staff of ram, celestial fury etc), possibly strength potions, as many THAC0 improving items you can find.

    ---> backstab backstab backstab. :D

Seriously. Sneak up behind the mage and stabity stabity. Repeat for cleric. If you have a good disabling weapon or just insanse damage (like an assasin) you migth be able to more or less one-shot.
If your a figther/thief you probably won't but at least you'll do massive damage to several of their characters from relative safety.

The problem with this is that is for some reason all the tough boss mobs are immune to backstab in TOB.

Which is sad because I have a totally sweet mental image of my thief running up a dragons tail and stabbing him right in the fucking neck all hardcore like.

You, sir, need someone who can turn undead.

And keep in mind that the floor is trapped, so if your characters are running after mobs they'll just get themselves killed.

Well, Aerie can turn undead but she's probably not any good at it in the early game. Try to limit your opponents as much as possible, preferably by standing just beyond the narrowest doorway in the area. Have Aerie and Jaheira memorize any and all spells that fuck with the undead. There's also an axe available from the bartender at the Copper Coronet called Azuredge which insta-kills all undead unless they make a saving throw. Try and get enough cash for that if you're having real trouble in the crypts, then watch Korgan rip them apart like a rhinocerous in a maternity ward.

Also I wouldn't worry about dex on an Inquisitor. Your attack rolls rely on strength, and beefy plate armor supplies your AC. There's a nice pair of gloves that put your dex at 18 anyway. I think they're in the planar sphere, but I'm not positive.
