I'm not a fan of that kind of forum. I've seen other boards that do that...they send the people they don't like or that break rules or whatever to some other spot on the forums. But here, I think we are capable of either getting them to fit-in, or to bugger-off.
The tubgirl thing that Tezkah brought up...it is currently my intention to punish ALL infractions first with jail, and then take it from there. The only situation that has come up since jail started that I felt demanded a ban instead of jail was a forum-raid on another forum. Since their infraction didn't really have anything directly to do with their activities on these forums, punishing them with jail on these forums didn't seem appropriate.
By all means, we may ban somebody AFTER they have been jailed, but by jailing them, they are made to reconsider their actions, and we are giving them an opportunity to straighten out. If they blow that 2nd chance, THEN a ban may be in order.

Well, you could stick them in SE, and they'd either develop thick skin, or they'd run screaming.

I still think the likes of Tubgirl and Goat.se should be bannable straight up when posted by someone who has joined just to post it. They clearly have no intention of being a member of the fourm.

I haven't yet seen jail used in this manner, but I'm very interested to see what the result will be. I mean, if someone's intent is to goatse the forums and they are thwarted by jail, then what would their next action be? It is a social experiment of great interest to me. The flip-side is also that in situations of "poor-judgement" by the regs, like when Susie posted that picture that one time, jail will allow them to continue visiting the boards instead of us being obliged to ban them.

Good point. I havn't seen a goat.se / tubgirl attack since Jailing was introduced. But I suspect Jailing will lead to them leaving or being IP banned for comeing back and doing it again, so I suppose it will have much the same effect as a ban.
Edit: on a completly unrelated note, while you making changes, it would be nice if the "you're banned" screen also unset the auto login cookie. I know that confuses a lot of people, they don't realise they can still browse.
I can tell you it works great on sitewhores. Its my #1 ally over in linksville. I actually prefer this to temp bannings right now. If your going to be banned, your going to be banned, if not, you can post, just slowly.

gah. It sounds like a nice idea, but I'm feeling a little too lazy to implement something like that for people that are 1) dumb enough to get banned, and ALSO 2) too dumb to figure out why they cannot read the forums.
If you want to give me the code to insert, I will put it in. But other than that, I don't really feel up to it at this time.

Maybe they can be sent an email explaining the ban, how to browse after the ban, and how to register at that other forum.

It's all about context, and you are not addressing this problem in the appropriate forum or manner. If you want to take it up with me, send me a PM or an email giving me an example of what you were jailed for and why you think you shouldn't have been. If I need to ask the mods about your general behavior aside from this incident, I have a forum to do so.
Making public pleas for consideration will pretty much always be ignored.
I still think the likes of Tubgirl and Goat.se should be bannable straight up when posted by someone who has joined just to post it. They clearly have no intention of being a member of the fourm.

Trogo. I jailed him for posting gay porn. He'd been registered for about a month at that point, but that was his second, and apparently last, post. Unless an SE++ mod banned him afterwards, but I don't remember seeing his name on the banlist.

Hey, I think I was the first to do this...
Anyway, why the hell am I jailed? What good does it do to jail someone without telling them why? They can not modify their behavior unless it was plainly obvious why they were jailed. Can someone be jailed for disagreeing with the popular consensus or having a bad attitude? There was a "Hey, I noticed you posted this before. We're going to act like elitists and bash you" bandwagon once when a mod asked me to recreate my post. Also, I read through the first page and couldn't get an answer: How long will I be jailed? I was planning on just sitting it out because 90% of the things I want to post involve pictures because I'm clearly an attention whore. I have yet to post an offensive image or link so why the hell was I jailed? Once again, if I don't know why, what can I "learn" from it? I thought it's supposed to be a "second chance" or something but I see no way to avoid future occurrences.

You might want to stop just there and post something worthwhile.
As for how long you are jailed, there is no fixed period, you are jailed until a mod unjails you.
Surely you can work out what thread you were jailed in, I'd suggest you go back and have another look

It says you were jailed last night by Harry B.
So... I looked to see what you posted yesterday that might have been considered inflammatory and trollish.
Didn't take much searching to find yet ANOTHER of your "OMG LOOK WHAT I CAN DO TO INTERNET EXPLORER" threads... despite the fact that if I'm not mistaken the forumers have made it clear they're sick of those (and sick of your confrontational attitude whenever they tell you to cut it out).
Maybe the trolling/flaming etc. that happened around that incident is why.
You know... people could just check their profile to see when it was done, look to see what they did around that time... and they'll discover why they were jailed pretty quick.
You might want to stop just there and post something worthwhile.
Perhaps I was too wordy. I came in here to make a VERY worthwhile suggestion: Make it manditory that a Deputy or Jailer explain why they jailed you. Otherwise it does no good. I also came here with worthwhile questions: How can I find out who jailed me or why? How long will I be jailed? Can I simply wait it out? The original post specifically asked if all the questioned were answered. These weren't so I am asking them and asking that they be applied in the main post. Somehow, I tied that into a paragraph and it was lost on you guys
I did NOT come here to bitch and moan, despite what it may look like. I came here with questions which had they been answered in the main post I would not have even asked.
As for how long you are jailed, there is no fixed period, you are jailed until a mod unjails you.
Thanks. That's another one of my questions which was not answered in the main post. It would make I fine addition Somewhere, I got the impression that it was for 90 days... See? I told you it was worthwhile.
Surely you can work out what thread you were jailed in, I'd suggest you go back and have another look
Not without knowing who jailed me. It turns out that I never got a single bit of communication from the deputy in the thread or PM. If I didn't figure out who the deputy was, I'd have no idea that it was related to that thread.

A few people tried to explain to you why, but you chose to ignore it. And, based on how you're acting whiled jailed, you'll never learn anything resembling humility.
Are you saying I was jailed because someone didn't like me? I'm sorry, but you simply insinuated an attitude which was totally not there in our other encounter. I suggest you re-read it. As I recall, all I did was explain myself until you made a personal attack on me.
Look, I know it was a rush job and you couldn't skim everything so let me break it down:
I made one post. The moderator asked me to make it again.
That was it.
When it got some flak, I simply responded with why it was recreated. When someone asked how it was done, I simply responded with that information. Any "trolling" was purely from those who didn't understand why the thread was recreated.
Seeing what other forumers thought is exactly what led to the other people in that thread creating similar responses. All ignored the initial explanation and came up with something else negative to say so they could agree. That's a group mentality and it's boundaries apparantly are not within the thread.
Are you saying that I was jailed because I was asked to recreate a thread? Because the old thread no longer existed and I had no explanation in the new thread, people jumped to conslusion saying I was making "ANOTHER of my 'OMG LOOK WHAT I CAN DO TO INTERNET EXPLORER' threads." Upon further investigation, I'm sure you will see that it is not the case.
Also, this thread is an isolated incident and is furthermore not related to the jailing. I did not intend to "discuss" MY jailing, but simply had questions. So I'm begging that we stick to them instead of making me look like a whiny baby (Yes, you're simply trying to answer my "Why am I jailed?" question but that incident is not related to HarryB or my jailing in any way).
Edit: Oh, and none of that was "yesterday." I haven't been on the boards all week, yet I was jailed yesterday. Yet another reason why I didn't know what it could have been.
Well I am in jail because denihilist is an asshole.
But thats my political opinion.
You're in jail cuz you're a goddamned idiot and reposted a thread that a mod had already locked.
On topic: Am I the only one who thinks that jailed people should still be able to quote? Removing their ability to use the quote tags makes their posts look like garbled messes -- especially if it contains nested quotes.

If their posts look like garbled messes, then people are less likely to actually read them, and more likely to harangue them for trying to quote while jailed.

Thanks. That's another one of my questions which was not answered in the main post. It would make I fine addition
Not without knowing who jailed me. It turns out that I never got a single bit of communication from the deputy in the thread or PM. If I didn't figure out who the deputy was, I'd have no idea that it was related to that thread.
Thanks! Why wasn't that mentioned in the original post?
Are you saying I was jailed because someone didn't like me? I'm sorry, but you simply insinuated an attitude which was totally not there in our other encounter. I suggest you re-read it. As I recall, all I did was explain myself until you made a personal attack on me.
At the time of writing that, I was in jail.
But thats my political opinion.
Don't fuck with me, I play Tribes.
Don't fuck with me, I play Tribes.
If their posts look like garbled messes, then people are less likely to actually read them, and more likely to harangue them for trying to quote while jailed.
It's part of the punishment.
