So far my favorite design choice: no blue shell equivalent weapon.
This.
Plus, I don't think any weapon will affect all racers, much less unavoidably, will it?
I also like what they did for the three-in-one weapon pick-ups.
On another note, how do you get the boost at the start? Nothing I try works.
If there's one thing that kind of disappoints me, it's that the opening cutscene had that one part where Sonic's car is spinning through the air, he takes his foot off the pedal, and then guns it back down onto the track. That would have been a neat move...
...or did I miss how to do it?

It depends on the character; if it's someone with low Acceleration, like Eggman or Big, it's somewhere just before 2; if it's someone with high Acceleration, like Shadow or Amigo, it's inbetween 2 and 1; if it's someone in the middle, like Sonic or Beat, on 2 should be good enough.

So this game isn't like Mario Kart Wii? It doesn't rain upon your ass with billions of attack-every-other-racer items? Because that's what made me hate that game to death. Worst in the series by far.
Nope; ASR took the evolutionary path which led to fun. I don't think there is an item that unavoidably affects all racers like MKWii is full of.
I think at worst, there is something like Banjo's All-Star Move, where they make it rain puzzle pieces all over the track, no matter where you are. But, they can be avoided, and not in BS "use a Mushroom boost to avoid a Blue Shell" ways.
Another plus: the slightest thing doesn't make you lose your items. In fact, I'm not sure anything does, so you don't have that crazy "use it now or lose it later" set-up that Mario Kart Wii tends to show.

K; I've just got Sonic and Banjo on the demo, so I'll try on 2 with Sonic. Think I've tried that before, but to make certain...
I assume I'll know when it worked?
In the demo, if you're using Sonic, you'll know because you've jumped up to 4th. With Banjo, who I think is the same as Eggman, you'll know because you're still with the back of the field, as opposed to watching them go into the distance.

I like how the original post dismissed this game flat out and now most people who have it are enjoying it.
Yeah, I was skeptical about this entire endeavour when I first saw it. After playing it, it really paid off to be optimistic. This game is just fun. Haven't run into anything I'd classify as "frustrating" yet. There was a bit of a learning curve, but 3-5 races in you get the hang of it easily. A joy to look at, to play, it's just... Well, like I said, pure fun, and I feel bad for the people who don't play it because of the stigma - that Mario is the only franchise worthy of creating a kart game - because they're truly missing out on an experience of joy.

Well it deserved a chance as it was made by the same guys who made the modern Outrun. I think even if this did not have Sega Characters in it, I would have been optimistic based just on that. I understand the burning desire a few people have to watch SEGA crumble, but they play a good hand when it comes to racers.
It's a damn shame that Sega Rally Evolution did not get much praise, as that was pretty damn good too.
I loved the demo and I've ordered it for the 360. I hope it gets some Streets Of Rage and Golden Axe themed DLC.

I would either part with money, or my firstborn, if they made Axel Stone a DLC character. He could drive a police car, and his special could be a guy popping out of the passenger seat and firing a bazooka of death randomly in front of the car. Like the Jiggy Rain.
So, tried holding the accelerator on 2 for Sonic, but no speed burst. The only rush to 4th I got was the same way I usually do-- by powersliding and kicking the tail of anything between me and first.
And despite taking first both times, I didn't finish in first-- had one really weird part where I fell through the edge of the track or something. Odd, but at least it's uncommon.
I didn't win either race I played, but unlike Mario Kart Wii, I really didn't feel cheated either time.
Sometimes I have a bad day on this, or just a bad race, sometimes not. There is a certain satisfaction to that.
Earning would-be SEGA Miles (it's a demo, after all) at least makes it feel like it wasn't a total wash.

Hmmm, try timing it a little earlier; just as it starts to fade onto screen, if not a split second before.

So I've taken the liberty of comparing the Wii version to the PC version directly. I captured these screenshots and tried to get them as close to the same spot as possible:

A lot of little stuff to notice. The building in Casino park in the background is different, as is the roulette wheel. The chao are missing from the stands. Also, a lot of the art seems to be completely redrawn rather than just resized from the HD version, the most obvious example being the coins in casino park. They're the S from the sega logo in the HD version, while they're normal dollar signs in the wii version.
The Wii version lacks any sort of blur. But beyond that, it's a pretty incredible conversion, definitely one of the best I've seen.
I have the DS version too, and I want to do it as well, but I can't figure out a good way to take screenshots outside of using a camera, which would look terrible.

That is really impressive. Now I'm not so tempted to get the 360 version of SST in addition to my Wii copy like I was going to do.

With Sonic you need to start holding it when 2 starts fading in, there's about a half-second leeway to it.
If you want to see how it works then just hold down the accelerator from the get go and watch the flames coming from the exhaust- what you want is for the race to start right after they turn into blue jets of flame (wait too much longer and you get a blow-out).
With most racers that means you need to floor it around the time 2 rolls around, give or take per racer.
Billy Hatcher is growing on me. He has a nice combination of speed, drift control and boost speed going; Amy would also work, but she takes forever to charge up each boost level (whereas Amigo seems to level 3 in the time she gets 1).

The downside with Amigo is that his level 3 boost is slower than Amy's; the lower the boost rating, the faster it charges, but at a cost to the extra speed you get. All of which makes things fairly balanced online, with most characters being able to win any particular race. However, the high speed + boost / low accel + handling characters tend to lose out more because of their acceleration off the start line.
Of course, this still makes Sonic one of the better characters. Which makes it much sweeter when someone using him has to try and chase down Amy when I use her.

Aye, it's surprisingly balanced, even against the AI. Though Shadow does seem to keep ahead more often than others (I have rubberbanding turned off), likely because he has a fast start which means he gets hit by items less.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.
But what pleases me is that I don't even really NEED it, at least in the demo. The game is balanced and refined enough that I can win just fine without it, unlike Mario Kart Wii, where it feels like every trick in the book is needed just to race.

Good racing Blitz. I like to pretend I almost had you a couple times there. It's fun to pretend.
Is anyone having trouble getting the Dreamarena trophy to register? I'm not the type to platinum a lot of games, but if I really, really like it, I will. S&SASR is one of those games, but it seems like the trophy is glitched.

Yeah, it didn't show up for me either, and from what I've read, lots of people are having the same trouble. Maybe it requires hosting a room, then inviting? Or maybe using the "Race with friends" option on the Multiplayer menu?

You know, after being untouchable way out in first or being in second behind a guy who makes it that far in this game, I think I finally sort of see where Nintendo is coming from with their blue shells. I still far prefer this game and think it's been horribly implemented in the last few. It needs to be scaled back to around the rarity and function of the 64 version, but at least I kind of understand.
APZonerunner: Mission 14 pissed me right the hell off for a while. Tails' plane sucks. Mission 42 makes it look like child's play though.
Barrabas: Yeah, I'd agree there. I've noticed that first place is often the safest position to be in, and the longer you can hang on to it the safer you are. Patching Superstar moves into the online mode might go a little way to fixing that.
As for the Dreamareana trophy, it's apparently bugged. Anyone who has it has gotten by pure black magic. You might get it the first time you play with a friend, you might get it the 100th. There's no real way of knowing, nor is there some super secret handshake you can do with the game's menus to have it recognize that you are, in fact, playing with a friend.
So, see that post on the previous page with my time on Rampart Road? I read on another forum this morning that the 360 record was now 55.642.
2 thousandths of a second faster.
I wasn't about to let this stand.
Thing is, I think I could get it under 55 seconds, with a bit more tidying up of my racing line; I'm still behind Galaxon (2nd place on the PS3) going around the first few corners.

And I would weep in joy.
I always considered him to be Balrog (or Claw, if any SF4 players are going to be pedantic) and Blanka's lovechild.
He also dies like a bitch to GRAND UPPAH!!!
But, back on topic, Axel should ride a motorbike, and have the police car as his All Star. Firing rockets everywhere, of course.
