They did. Nintendo wanted him in Double Dash. Sega liked the idea but wanted him to run. Nintendo said he should just ride/drive a car like everyone else. Nintendo didn't want to rework the game just for one character, Sega never moved on the car discussion.
I heard that Sumo tried the whole "Sonic running without a car" idea for this game originally. But it just didn't feel right, what with every other player on the field being twice the size, and handling like, well, cars.
it's probably an idea that works better on paper than in execution...
Some Kotaku commenter mentioned that if every console got an exclusive character, and 360 had Banjo, then Wii should get Mario (obviously) and PS3 should get a Valkyrie Chronicles character in a tank or something.
It's a shame it won't happen, because I thought the idea of a VC character was pretty cool.

It is true. I'm sure it's even linked at some point earlier in this thread.
Why would Nintendo want to boost up the competition of one of their top sellers by allowing Mario or Miis in?
To keep people away from the Xbox 360 version, most likely. As it stands, Xbox 360 is the one to get for me, but if I hear Mario's in... well, sorry Rare Bear. Maybe when you hit discount.

Mii support has been confirmed for the Wii version.
B.D. Joe. You know, from Crazy Taxi? He's a little hard to spot but he's definitely there. Pause when you see the taxi on screen and you can see his hat.
Though I'm not sure I could play him without blasting Offspring. Every time I hear those early Offspring songs I can't help but think of hurtling downhill in Crazy Taxi.

God damn I can't believe they actually brought out Opa-Opa. Only Tom Tom/Hu-Man/Shion could possibly top Opa-Opa.
SHIT, I can't believe it. I hope his special move is to call out Space Harrier. The two have been linked since before Opa-Opa even existed, but they've rarely ever actually interacted. The only direct, main connections (besides obviously taking place in the same war/time period/universe) is that A) One of the levels in the x86000 port of Fantasy Zone is literally a level from space harrier (level 5, complete with boss), The last level in Super Fantasy Zone is the Assemble (the last level from Space Harrier), C) Opa Opa appeared as a helper in Planet Harriers, and D) In the bad ending to Fantasy Zone II DX where Opa-Opa goes crazy, Space Harrier kills him.
one of the developers for the game already said there could be more characters via DLC, but there are other characters who have unusual cameos that'll expand the roster, and that "one in particular will be note worthy."
Having Space Harrier come in to help Opa-Opa would be fucking epic.
Also, holy shit, can you imagine how bizarre and surreal The Fantasy Zone level is gonna be? I hope it takes us across several planets instead of one. And I hope its dripping with both Space Harrier and Fantasy Zone references. Maybe have a cameo by the Dragon Prince Euria?

This all intrigues me; I like the idea of this expanded world covering different series and playtypes, and not in a Mega Man/Mega Man X/MegaMan Legends sort of way. Is there a place I can learn more about how it all crosses together?

I'm still debating which character to use as my main. I mean, Sonic's a default, but I want to see how the vehicle mechanics work out; if you get more boost from doing more tricks in a single jump, I might favour one of the flying characters, e.g. Opa Opa, Tails; if the bikes really have noticably superior handling and acceleration, I'll use Shadow or Ryo for twisty circuits.
I like what they've done with Jacky/Akira though - their special is VF Kids mode, and given that VF Kids was ~20% faster than vanilla VF...

Hmm, now there is an enticing thought: what if you could assemble racing teams in a game like this?
With some characters handling better for some people than others on some circuits, wouldn't it be nice to be able to switch for each track as you work towards winning a cup?
Of course, I'm not talking about a huge group or anything; two, maybe three racers at the most.
As an aside, forming different teams might have the possibility of different ending/winning animations for the racers...

PS360 version got 83%, Wii got 83%, DS got 70%. Haven't got a copy of the mag myself, so I don't know what they marked it down on, but that's definitely an encouraging score.

Hey that trailer didn't look too bad at all, I think I'm finally going to clue one of my Sonic friends in on this. She was pretty disappointed with the Bioware RPG so I didn't want to get her hopes up.

edit: and its wheels should fall off at regular intervals for authenticity
The game is going to sell like crap on the PS3 anyways, so no point in going out of their way for sackboys or whatever.
Didn't keep EA Sports from inserting Mario/Weegee/Peach into SSX/NBA Street/etc.
What SSX game was this?
I may need to grab the Gamecube game of said SSX game with Mario.

Truly a blessing that man was not good for sonic.
Besides if you ask me running while everyone else is driving steel death machines seems a bit to risky even for Sonic's devil may care style.
Sonic fights killer robots and rides on a biplane by standing on its wings, completely unsecured.

Only that it won't be as good's as Sonic R's.
