At the moment, it seems like a case of breaking clear of all the weapons, but I'd say some of it is due to getting into a position that allows me to start drifts early. For instance, I'm usually already at blue charge as I come around the final corner; then I release drift once it hits red (about halfway down the start-finish straight), and instantly get a second drift started. I'm usually firing a yellow into the first hairpin, charging up to red down the straight, followed by a yellow through the slight right and part of the straight.
If you are getting hit, it helps to drift while you recover, so that you can get a quick blue boost and get back up to speed. Of course, when you get hit by a Knux All-Star -> Rocket -> Rocket -> Rocket combo, you can't really do much about it... but that seems to be rare. I'll try and record a run of under 3 minutes on Expert and see if it helps people.

Dr. Eggman.......10.....4.....5.....9.. Banjo & Kazooie..10.....4.....5.....9..
Just from that, I can tell almost everyone will be trying to grab Sonic online, since he's the only one with high turbo and decent accereration/handling... I'll probably go for either one of the balanced ones, or Jacky & Akira.
Huh shouldn't sonic be faster then robotnick? That doesn't make sense...

Sure it does. Have you ever played any of the old Sega Genesis Sonic games? Dr. Robotnick is always fast enough to get away right up until he makes a stand at the end.
I really need to upgrade the way I record these though, as burning onto a DVD whilst in SD isn't good enough; after going through WMM and YouTube, it basically looks like it's been crapped onto the site.

I had a lot of fun with this. The difficulty curve is pretty mean - I was playing as Banjo & Kazooie, and everyone was just zooming past me. If I ever get a decent lead, I have to start playing really aggressively to keep it, because one hit from a missile or something and bam - back to anywhere between 4th and 6th.
Overall, it feels a lot like Crash Team Racing, which makes it a solid first-day for me since that was my favourite kart game of all time (I'm ducking the tomatoes right now).
If anyone knows when to hit the gas to get a boost off of the bat, then I'm listening.

Just before the 2 count, although there's some leeway - if you hit it halfway between 3 and 2, you should just get it; if you hit it on 2, you're too late.

New time on Expert with Sonic - 2:56.437. And STILL NO BLOODY SPEED SHOES. To go any faster, it looks like I'll need to pray that I get the triple shoe on the first set of items...
@Dunxco, last time I saw TSR post in here, was when he went "OPA MOTHER FUCKING OPA". In a positive way, of course.
EDIT - Scratch that time, I finally got a speed shoe; 2:55.783.

This game is actually pretty fun. The last few Mario karts have gotten a little stale to me, and It doesn't hurt that it actually feels like you're going fast in this one. I'm probably gonna go with Beat or Sonic.
Edit: Are we gonna get an updated OP anytime soon?
Final attempt at time attacking the PS3 demo - proper time attacks can wait until I get the game on Friday (bloody UK release dates *shakes fist*) :
Done on Beginner so I didn't have to worry about having rockets fired at me... and somehow made it harder because of how bad they start... not to mention Knuckles' habit of zooming off into the distance, only to pull what can only be described as an emergency stop right in front of me.
My reaction? I loaded up MUGEN on the PC and proceeded to punch his face in.

My god this game is awesome. It's like F-Zero had a lovechild with Outrun and that child's role model was Mario Kart. The racing is so loud and fast that it's like a sensory overload, and I had my brothers behind me just entranced by the whole thing. It's only 50 bucks MSRP too!
Please tell me someone besides myself, Dunxco and Blitzace is getting this game.

The game is a win for me.
I almost had a seizure though on that one macarena map.

There's something really off about the handling in this just like the timing in Sega All Stars Tennis was off. It's hard to put into words but all the Sega characters in the world can't hide that this doesn't play like a Sega game. I am not necessarily writing off the game completely, it might well be a competent little racer especially for children but it doesn't match my preconceptions of how a Sega racer should play. I also don't like the way the all star moves take control away from your character with a silly cut-scene and that the gaps in the track are meaningless as you can't seem to fall through them.
Well that and the announcer. "Ree Har-zoo-ki", jesus christ he is awful.
Ratchet/Clank would have been a much better choice.
Oh god, I'd almost buy the game just for that. I needs me more R&C. Jak&Daxter would also work. Or Sly Cooper. Hell, there's loads of Sony-specific mascots they could've used.
Naked Snake and EVA on the motorbike from the end of Metal Gear Solid 3. Picture it and tell me that wouldn't be awesome. Ratchet would be more likely though.

I dunno I feel like the handling is spot on.
The game plays like the original SNES Super Mario Karts (drifting particularly), but with Wii style colourful 3d graphics.
So far I'm really feeling the game. It's not about items (although they can help a little bit ala SNES SMK), it's all about racing.
I was ready to hate this game, but it's really winning me over. The inclusion of Opa-Opa and "Concept of Love" have won me over, and I'll probably pick it up for the PS3 this weekend. If anyone wants, feel free to add me as a friend and we can play sometime. PSN: PooglyWoogly
For those wondering who the PS3 owners get in their demo as a replacement for Banjo, it's Dr. Eggman. While Sonic is something of an all-rounder (albeit with max turbo), Eggman's purely biased towards speed; max speed and near-max turbo, at the cost of only a half-full bar of handling, and even less acceleration. Could be one for the experts.
EDIT - Turns out it's a different course too; Rampart Road from the Billy Hatcher set of tracks.
Huh. Sackboy or Kratos would have made more sense as an exclusive character.
Kratos? Seriously, I couldn't disagree with that more. Not only would you not been able to get the ultraviolence in there (which would be the only real point of having Kratos) I think he'd probably be the most out of place character in a cart racer ever.
Ratchet/Clank would have been a much better choice.
Okay how about a Compromise?

I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
I like how Casino Park in this game is way, way better designed than the actual casino park zone from Sonic Heroes. It looks fantastic too. If they'd dropped this race track as-is into Sonic Unleashed, it would be awesome.
So far, I've only played the 360 demo, and have been loving every moment of it. I hope I can afford the full game soon.
As much as I love Mario, though, I think I prefer this over Mario Kart Wii by a long shot-- that is, if the rest of the game holds up as well as the demo. It feels as though somewhere, Mario Kart reached a fork in the road of its evolution. It chose the path which led to Mario Kart Wii, while Sumo explored the other path, and this is what we have. I love that it feels like you just have more control overall, and the game is more about racing and the strategic use of items, rather than spamming the track with unavoidable crap and seeing who happens to stagger over the line first before being blasted again.
Seriously, my characters are frequently nailed during the victory lap after crossing the finish line in MK Wii. I don't think that's ever happened to me in ASR.
To some regret, I'm going for the 360 version first. I say "to some regret" because an inclusion of Mario would have made the Wii version THE one to get for me, and maybe get 360 at some point when the price drops. Instead, Banjo and no Mario has had just the opposite effect. Pity Sumo thought it would hurt the product to have Mario after the Olympics... hopefully they'll make a sequel, and hopefully they'll know better then.
But yeah, instead, I'll go with Banjo, plus the Avatar equivalent of the Mii cart, and the promise of DLC. I'd have taken Mario and Miis over that with the Wii Wheel controls, but alas.
Edit: Woohoo! I just got first place on Advanced Difficulty! I don't think that would ever happen to me on Mario Kart Wii, and if it did, I would probably feel more lucky than accomplished.
Incidentally, the race just before that, I got 7th. And while I lost, at least I would have gotten SEGA Miles toward unlocking something, so it's not the wasted effort a loss in MKWii is.

Okay, so it looks like it still suffers from the usual mentality of the opponents in racing games; dunno how many races total I did, but out of 12 wins, only 3 were in the same room. 8 of the other 9 were "well done, have a boot", and the last one was the room owner quitting out after I'd finished, meaning no Sega Miles.
Also, I've never managed to get more than 1 Confusing Star whilst leading a 3-lap race. This makes me wonder how legit the guy who managed to get no less than 5 and fire them backwards at me during laps 2 and 3 in a race is playing. Seriously, it was like every other item he picked up was a Star.
So far, it's looking like Shadow is one of the better characters online, going by my opponents. Still annoys them when they see a pink hedgehog win by 6 seconds, though. Maybe that's why I'm being kicked; they're too embarassed at being beaten by Amy.

Holy crap, the tracks in this game are beautiful. These are some of the best looking things to come out of video games in a long time. Casino Park- Roulette Road (Sonic based level) and Carnival Town- Sunshine Tour (Samba de Amigo) are two of the best looking racing game tracks I've ever seen. The latter is also a real acid trip. So much color, and lots of stuff going on in the background that makes racing through these a real feast for the eyes.
Indeed. Even if someone thinks this game isn't better than MKWii, it makes a nice complement to it. After all, Nintendo doesn't do DLC and usually tends to only release one of these games in a long while, so if you're tired of Mario Circuit 1 and DK Valley, this seems like a great way to spice things up.
And of course, for the people without a Wii, well, here you go: a worthy substitute.

So thankfully my amazon order shipped sooner than they said it would. I just got it today. It's a fantastic cart racer. I haven't seen one done this well without the name Mario Kart in a long time. I'd recommend it to HD console owners who are looking for a cart racer fix and don't have the mario kart option in an instant.
So far my favorite design choice: no blue shell equivalent weapon.
I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality of the demo. I don't really care for the weapon system in kart games but the driving feels really solid. I will probably pick it up once it hits bargain bin prices. I hope they put out another outrun.
