Brand? Resolution? Plasma or LCD? I've seen some 720p plasmas going for dirt cheap lately, so I wouldn't be surprised. 1080p has become the norm, but that doesn't mean a 720p 42" set isn't going to look great in most circumstances.
I don't know if it's "too good to pass up" but if you're in the market for a budget hdtv that's a solid choice.
Dynex is a bestbuy in house brand.. so the warranty is really easy to deal with.. just bring it into the store.

It is a good buy, but be forewarned. I recently had to replace an Insignia 32" LCD that was a Future Shop house brand, which is Best Buy in Canada. This TV only lasted two years.
If you do buy this TV, I recommend buying the Product Service Plan as well and ensure that they will replace the TV no matter what happens to it.

I don't know, I just recall seeing Samsungs and the like with 7000:1 or something. My assumption is that the higher the #, the better.
uh huh. And that would matter, if those numbers had any kind of standard and weren't just pulled out of the marketing teams ass to influence savvy buyers like yourself.
Seriously, just go look at the TV, then make your decision. Don't use contrast ratio.

Compared to some Sony's and Samsung's around it, the floor unit on display was faster than the other TVs there. I'm really tempted to, but I'm always afraid to because of course it'll be 400 next week.

Price guarantee. Besides, HDTV prices have been static for a while now.
I bought my current TV in Aug on sale and since then any sale price on the same model has still been higher than what I paid.
I'm going to go ahead and do this tomorrow. Thanks. Any last advance beforehand is appreciated.
Don't drive it home unsecured with a heavy cooler?

That's awful guys. I'm not going to elaborate on the contrast ratios up there it's all in Moe's in the huge TV thread. Personally I'd stay out of in-house brands...Vizio makes LCDs that aren't too bad and pretty cheap.
I sell TVs at Best Buy unfortunately. I usually avoid selling Dynex. Dynex is one of our house brands, and they get returned all the time--but they just released some new ones, though, and surprisingly I have not heard anything bad about them. They sell out fast, which makes sense because they're the cheapest hdtvs you are gonna find most likely.
The older ones were ridiculous though. People would bring tvs in that would take like 20 to 30 seconds to change channels or just lock up. Also their cables are complete ass. So the general consensus in our workplace is that dynex is pretty shitty. But maybe they have turned over a new leaf with these new tvs?

Its not a great TV I think we covered it. Contrast ratio is also blown way out of proportion. What really matters is how it looks to the user purchasing it. I have people tell me they don't see the difference between a upconverted DVD vs. a Blu-Ray. So as long as he has no issue with the video quality, its a good price.

So the working theory is that the Dynex has a better refresh rate than a Samsung or Sony? I don't quite know about that one.
Edit: Something important to know, you really can't compare TVs in Best Buy. They aren't running good stuff, they are calibrated way out of proportion, etc etc etc.

It could be a lot of TV's have a 72 Hz refresh rate (a division of 24) some newer ones have a 120 Hz refresh rates. This really shouldn't be noticeable, if its that it seems to be ahead of the other TV's, it might just be how each of them are hooked into the device and whether or not there is a buffer between receiving the video and showing it on the screen. Its why tons of people have noticed issue's going from playing GH on one TV to another, that and size differences will affect how much time is left on visual cues.
I was not aware of 72 hz refresh rates existing, but okay. He was able to discern proper pulldown compared to a Sony or Samsung that were not 120hz.
The Guitar Hero effect really shouldn't be noticable during video playback.

Well I am saying if he is watching the same video getting fed to 20 TV's, and his TV seems to be slightly ahead of the rest (which is about the only thing that could convince someone it is faster) that it just might mean there isn't as much of a buffer between when the signal is received and shown on the TV. That is assuming all things are equal on all of the TV's. But it might just be that its the closest on the chain to the source.

Sorry.... Little more research and LCD's went mostly from 60 to 120. Where as Plasma's were mostly 72.
But it would look more like flickering then the performance.
OP How were you able to discern that the Dynex was "faster"?
If you're going to buy any other major electronics, feel free to haggle. A friend of mine bought an HDTV and an xbox 360 with service plans at the same time from Best Buy and they knocked 100 bucks off the tv price (it was on clearance) and threw in a wireless controller free.
Maybe he meant how quickly it can change channels?
Well that pointless I mean how many times do people change channels on the TV. I use my cable box. Though Would would be good to know is how quickly it can change resolutions. But in the end most of the time with a TV is spent actually watching something and in that case the only real worry should be whether the PQ and Size are worth the $500.

Depends on the location and/if they are needing the sale bad enough. If they're going really well that day (as far as sales go) they won't budge. This isn't a garage sale.

Well, the guy who works at Best Buy mentioned earlier in this thread that people would return TVs that took 20 to 30 seconds to change channels, which by any measure is way too long if you ever have to do it.

Sure, it's not a garage sale. However, stores will still sometimes negotiate on big purchases, especially when sales are down for the day as you said.

This was my thinking. Plus, my old tv was the same way. It was incredibly annoying.

and the extended warranty is what I will be getting, easily. How much more should that add on?

Aren't you still paying off your last HDTV purchase? A TV is not worth going into debt for.

Seriously, don't pull two S&EMs out of the same category. Make like Wu-Tang and diversify yo bonds.
