So the news of this game inspired me to start playing a bunch of different Castlevanias. I just got my ass kicked by Death in PoR. I forgot how hard he is in that one.
I'm tempted to go back and play Lament of Innocence for some reason.
I never did get the good ending in PoR, and I've really slacked off with Order of Ecclesia.
Nevermind the good ending in PoR. Try getting it on hard mode capped at level 1 with a fresh save file. :P
Just the opening musing from Patrick Stewart alone have sold the game countless times to me: "What motivates a man to confront the challenges that most of us would run from?" Very, VERY good delivery on that line.
The music a bit on the Hans Zimmer-ish side, but not a turn-off... yet.
I'm glad to see we have a Belmont and some evil man who wishes to wipe them out.
Now, we just need to see some bats and skeletons. Werewolves are cool and all, just saying.
"Some evil man"
Come now
Let's not beat around the bush
It's fucking Dracula
No no.
It's some random dark priest or somesuch who will eventually be revealed to either be trying to resurrect Dracula or will sacrifice themselves to resurrect dracula.

As long as we agree that the final boss of a Castlevania game will be Dracula
I mean, let's speculate but let's not be stupid, is all I'm saying
So, the only Castlevania I've ever liked was Symphony of the Night back on the PSX. And the only MSG I've liked was Metal Gear Solid for the same system.
Looks almost exactly like Christopher Lambert if you ask me.

I have a feeling that they're retconning the Leon Belmont story with this one, after seeing the extended trailer. I mean yeah, there wasn't a whole lot new to the trailer. Gut feeling I guess.
I'm fine with them retconning Leon out of existence, if that's what they want to do. I thought the "origin" of Dracula in Lament of Innocence was pretty dumb but I might be in a minority on that one; I don't know what other Castlevania fans think (I know I'm in a minority in preferring the Metroidvania-style games to the harder side-scrollers).

Really? I find the side-scrollers to all be pretty horrid compared to Symphony of the Night and beyond.

When I think about it, Leon and his story were pretty shitty. I was fascinated with the idea of Drac and the Belmonts having an origin more than what the origin was. I think if they use this game to bring about Dracula so that he's Vlad as a human to begin with (like Bram Stoker's Dracula) they'll have great success.
I mean, not that plot is a heavy point of these games necessarily. The game still better be fun.

I am all for this being the Origin retcon.
Hopefully it will do well, then we get the Julias Belmont 1999 event with this engine...

Julius. And I hope we don't see the 1999 event in this manner. Frankly, I hope we see it in a stage to stage production like the series originally was. I mean, with more features added. And if they have to, the Metroidvania thing would work. But they would really have to sell me on them finally having this 3D thing down before I feel comfortable with the idea of the series' pinnacle being portrayed that way.

Yeah, wouldn't call it a minority at all.
The lack of mobility in the earlier, 'standard' side-scrollers is what kills them for me. The Metroidvanias are much less frustrating to control, to me.
Ah, the dual death/dracula fight.
Really not that hard.
Just spam death with maxed-out axes.
Yeah, I was actually really disappointed by how easy PoR was boss-wise. I mean, I actually picked the game up after not having played it for a couple of months and thought, "Oh, I should probably finish this."
I beat Dracula/Death about twenty minutes later, on my first try. It was pretty disappointing.

All I know is I never beat Portrait of Ruin because, if I remember correctly, they expected you to defeat Death and then immediately fight Dracula
And fuck that
Or maybe they didn't, and Dracula just had multiple forms or cheap attacks or something, because all I remember is putting that game down and never playing it again
I've apparently blocked out the traumatic memories
in the dual fight, they both share a health pool, so you just really have to fight one. The fight immediately after that is true dracula, and that's what can be kind of difficult. But if you bring a few potions to tide you over, it gets a little bit easier.

I guess the big reveal here is that we've definitely got a Belmont.
The art direction, the character design, and especially the music and the voice acting
Patrick Stewart is always good, and whoever was playing Dracula in that trailer knew how to sell the shit out of those lines

Should I even bother with this thing?
Looks almost exactly like Christopher Lambert if you ask me.
I still want Simon to get a personality, a character already.
Judgment doesn't count.
So, if I heard right, this is a reboot for the Castlevania mythos? Damn, I wanted 1999 before any such thing happened.
Like Mega Man Legends? Then check out my story, Legends of the Halcyon Era - An Adventure in the World of Mega Man Legends on TMMN and AO3!

The question is, will Gabriel be our Belmont. Or will the Belmont in question be a supporting character.
I hope for Gabriel Belmont, I always feel cheated when I play a CV game and I'm not playing one.

The only one I ever remember is Simon
There was also Ralph -I mean Trevor
and Richter
and that one woman in one of the Gameboy versions but that game was retconned
oh and Julius. Julius was awesome.
I was under the impression those have no bearing on this new start
