After finishing world 8, I'm only left wondering if it's even possible to beat this game on multiplay
With four players, the final stage was the most epic clusterfuck I have ever witnessed in gaming. When we finally, finally beat it, everyone was mad at me because I raced ahead with the propeller hat and left everyone behind to their deaths, in an effort to just put an end to the madness.
7-castle is also a complete massacre in 4-player. I don't think it's realistically possible to do without having 2-3 people bubble during most of the second half until the one or two people playing get past all the studded black dildos of doom.
I think it's a little bit of a stretch to say that it's fully beatable in multiplayer when some stages have one person handling the stage while the other players either die off or bubble and wait for the "safe part." The good thing is the vast majority of stages don't have that kind of an issue and everyone can participate.
That stage in world 7 or so with the platforms that move along the tracks depending on if you're tilting left or right, that you take control of by hitting a special block? That stage is impossible in 4-player until you can convince everyone to settle down and coordinate movement/platform control. Until then, when everyone keeps hitting the blocks and fighting for control of the platforms, it's just a disaster.
While it would be nice to have it so all levels could be played without bubbling (and played well) I still commemorate Nintendo on the fact that they made a 4 player co-op platformer that we still all want to play co-op.
Heck, I know I couldn't do it.
Besides, think if they had left it without bubbles, then we'd all be complaining about how certain stages can't be beat with friends at all.
Perhaps this has been covered, but are the blue shrinky mushrooms _ever_ handy?
Yeah, there was one of the water levels that I struggled with, so I used the blue mushroom and just ran across the water instead. Definitely made it easier.

You... you can run across the water when you're small? *facepalm*
I'm all for Yoshi getting his own game if it means keeping him out of the standard Mario platformers. He's one of my least-favorite characters in the franchise, and I was pretty happy that he showed up less than once per world in NSMBW and was locked to specific stages.
True. But that said, the propeller breaks the game pretty hard sometimes.
No more than the leaf or the cape does, though.
True again. It's less plentiful than the cape, at least.
It also almost completely inhibits your forward momentum. Trying to cheese your way through most of the horizontal stages with it would probably be more trouble than it's worth.
The NSMB team in general seems to be pretty dead-set against having a straightforward flying power-up.
Well, I doubt they want to have 1 player careen off into the sky leaving the other 3 players to die. Otherwise I'm sure they'd have a flying powerup.
The propeller cap makes the wide open jumping sections easy, but that's about it. Rarely does it trivialize a level, and it certainly doesn't eliminate all challenge from the game like the cape did.

The propeller cap usually fucks me up on account of you can't activate it more than once without touching the ground again first... and for some reason I keep expecting to be able to do so.
I also can't remember the last time I RTFM for _any_ game.
I don't know why this is something to brag about when there's clearly a downside to it.
Game developers might be able to brag about it.
And actually, there's even a little training area for running on water near one of the early mini mushrooms. The coin placements should tell you everything you need to know there.
The game is actually pretty good about training you to use things the first time you see them, just from coin and obstacle placement. For the propeller hat there's a line of coins you need to spin to hit, for Yoshi there's a bunch of coins you need to flutter kick to reach, for the mini mushroom there's that water section, and for the Penguin suit there's a slope and some blocks you have to slide at to hit.

I remember the mini mushroom cavern with water and a wall kick path of coins, but to be fair, a player could just miss the pipe to get there and miss out on the "training."

But no, instead people will just continue to act like a game is flawed if it doesn't pop up some tutorial text or something.
What about people who rent games or buy used and have no manual to reference? If there's no clear way to deduce how things work without an external document, then something is flawed. You could stick an info box of sorts right on the overworld inventory screen. Plenty of room to display item descriptions there, even in SD.
But as it was pointed out, this doesn't really matter or apply in most cases because this game tends to give you power-ups right when they're the most useful, and their abilities are pretty apparent just from messing around with them.

Nah. I think almost every stage with a Mini Mushroom also has water somewhere in it. This one's kind of hard to miss.

I think you misinterpreted my post. I was not bragging; it was an actual realization. Back in the day, I would pore over the NES manuals, which were actually fairly hefty for a while. Then they got thinner and thinner to the point of uselessness. There was a similar trend with SNES manuals.

It's possible to bounce off another player. I imagine that, with the proper team work, you could have two people flying endlessly.

I'm surprised there's not a Super Skills video to that effect.

I don't buy used games that don't include case and manual. Gotta be complete.
I also don't rent. No need to when I won't pay more than $10 for a game anyway. (Well, okay, NSMBW was a rare exception because I know it'll never be less than the great deal Amazon gave on it.)

There is. I can't remember which level, but it's a vertically-scrolling level in which they don't use the platform at all. Just propellers and bouncing off other characters.

I was kindof expecting a world 9 castle and another boss fight... but oh well. Only coins I'm missing now are in 9-7 and I'm not sure that I care to get them. That level is just... not fair. Harumph!
Finally got around to beating it in single player this weekend, and hey, look at that. A shiny star on the save file. Not bad for sucking worse than a three-year-old, eh?

Good deal on the shiny star. :^:
Yea, I don't play my main file anymore because I don't want to mess up my shiny stars. :P

It turns out that yes, the world does still love classic 2-d Mario. 8-)

Watch the "hint" videos, they're extremely handy. They do some of the craziest stuff with mini.
Looks like someone didn't read the manual. If you had, you would've known this.

Or played the DS game.
Like Mega Man Legends? Then check out my story, Legends of the Halcyon Era - An Adventure in the World of Mega Man Legends on TMMN and AO3!
I did neither of those things.

The only thing that isn't really explained in-game is pressing A to bubble.

Yeah, I loved this game and wish there was even more to do.
Yeah, why did this game have 77 levels as opposed to the original New Super Mario Bros' 80?
Those 3 levels could equal the mushroom houses?
