You know, I think this is the first complaint I've ever heard against SMW.
Super Mario World was nowhere near as good as Mario 3. A lot of it felt pretty flat to me and it was not "themed" as well as Mario 3 with its worlds. Levels were not as memorable. Too much focus on Yoshi who was too easily lost.
I found the hardest star in SMG to be the one daredevil run on the fire world later on, actually. Bouldergeist and Luigi's Purple Coins weren't that hard once you figured out what you had to do, but there was so much random shit going on in that lava level that even if you knew exactly what you were doing you'd probably get hit by something along the way.
FUCK the daredevil run of Bouldergeist. I had heard about Luigi's Purple Coins, so I knew that it was going to be awful, but Bouldergeist surprised me with what a pain in the ass it was.
I actually beat Daredevil Bouldergeist without knowing you could destroy those big columns that pop out of the floor by spinning.
The trick is to just never run in a circle or back onto your own path - if you have to turn around, run closer or further away from him. If you run in a circle you'll dodge a boulder, dodge another, and then run into the first one.

That's my favourite star in the game. It just feels so... epic.
I didn't expect a real sequel to Mario Galaxy for a few years. But a direct sequel to the greatest game of this generation so soon was an awesome surprise. Thank you so much, Nintendo.
What I want is a new story, but with the same basic hub template as the original. Many many levels to explore. Each with at least 6 stars. The problem with the original Galaxy was that some of the best levels only had one star! Moar stars in each level plz! I hope the "10%" of reused levels are the ones that only got one star the first time. That would be swell. Also, the cookie cutter candy level with the Mario Bros 3 "Athletic theme" as well.
And yes, some remixed SMB2 music please. Also, some levels that take place in SMB2 style settings. I want Shy Guys here, people!
Actually, let's just get Wart to be a boss as well. He hasn't done much at all since he was last seen in Link's Awakening. Let's bring him out of retirement, pull him out of his hidey-hole and get him up into space to kick some Mario ass again! WART! WART WART!
Actually, if we're going to talk about SMG's music....
Gusty Garden Music and Good Egg Galaxy Music
God, I love SMG's soundtrack so much.
I hope to God and Miyamoto himself that the game has a lot of new music as well as the old stuff from Galaxy. But it had damn well better have HELL PROMINENCE!
Also, NEMESIS KING KOOPA! (Look it up) The greatest Bowser level music since the Bowser levels in Mario 64. (I'd link to it on YouTube as it's probably there, but then it'd turn into another video.)
And don't forget Battle Rock. It was horribly underused.
The difficulty level in Mario Galaxy was incredibly well-balanced, I thought. The main game was relatively straightforward, never being TOO easy, but there was plenty of challenge for the completionist. And the difficult parts never got stupid. Even the Luigi coin challenge only took me around 8-10 tries, and I still felt wholly satisfied after I had done it.
I wouldn't mind a more general increase in difficulty (after all, it is the sequel), but I don't want them to take it too far. Balancing a game like this is incredibly precarious, and I'd rather they err on the side of caution.

Super Mario Galaxy was great, and over way too soon. For this reason, I gladly welcome Super Mario Galaxy 2. More of the same, with new twists in, and at least slightly more challenging? What more could you want?

What's sad is playing through the game once, getting all the stars, and then playing through and getting all the stars with Luigi, and the game still felt like it was over way too soon.

Ah yes, thank you for bringing that one up. The Lava Galaxy daredevil was one of the high points of the game because it was really unforgiving, but because the game handled so well it never felt like it was killing you out of spite. It takes every ounce of skill acquired through the game to get that star and it is so worth it.
And I wouldn't be surprised to see more Red Star, given that it was one of the things that the developers never were able to implement, and since SMG2 is built on those aspects of the first game, it seems natural.
I actually beat Daredevil Bouldergeist without knowing you could destroy those big columns that pop out of the floor by spinning.

You can also just orbit Bouldergeist very closely and the only thing you have to worry about is running into a Boo.

Anyone else hoping they change around the hub world too? The little space station was nowhere near as cool as the castle in 64 or Delfino Island in Sunshine.
im with you on that one... i want more hidden things you can miss!
The space station was far best one. Elegant, streamlined and simple. I hated Delfino Plaza because damnit I don't want a level to get me to the next level! Just tell me where to go next, this isn't Zelda!
I liked the castle in 64 because it presented very neat little oddities for secret levels or alternate entrances. Conversely I hated Delfino for some reason. I think it's because the castle is very basic in appearance, but contains much more than meets the eye. I wouldn't mind more of that.

And jumping into paintings is just cool.
Out of all the Mario games, the 64 one has what I consider the coolest set-up.
I'm hoping for a little more flexibility with the power ups in this one. I can understand from a design point of view why they don't want you to have them in certain levels, but at least make it possible after you beat the game to go through and beat every level as Bee or Spring Mario, or something.
I am so excited for this. Mario Galaxy is hands down the best game of this gen, a sequel with new levels and Yoshi holy fuck are you kidding me?
Also noticed this in the trailer:
The return of giant world!
I remember one of the last levels of the first game having one planetoid where you could pull a cork and release all the air from inside it, making it slowly shrink. That would be a way cooler way of implementing the giant/tiny gimmick than just warping between the two sizes.
The Mario series has proven to be one of the few where simply more of the same can actually be good. I didn't really dig the first Galaxy so I won't be playing this one either but it seems pretty much the same as the former game so it'll probably do just fine.

I just hope it doesn't come out near Holiday 2010, when my little cousin is around. He can't quite play games himself but loves Mario, so he pretty much FORCED me to play for five hours straight. I got 21 stars in one sitting.
I never thought Mario could be torture.
I was wrong. I dread the nightmare of NSMB:Wii with multiplayer this Christmas.
Anecdote aside, More of Galaxy is all good.

More Matter Splatter stuff would be awesome. I'm really excited about both of these new Mario games.
I do not however see the point of reusing old levels, even if they have new objectives. If it's going to only be 10 percent, would it really be that hard to create new levels for that extra 10 percent as well? It just seems pretty lazy, and it would be worth it to put forth the extra effort to make it 100 percent new.
But that's just me. Still, I am happy, just not jazzed.
Perhaps they simply had some favorites they'd like to do more with?
I consider 64 and Galaxy to be different beasts. One is not superior nor inferior to the other. Nostalgia makes me prefer 64, but that's because 3D platforming was alien to me and I was enthralled by the newness.
I still want a Wii version of Super Mario 64 DS with SMG graphics.
I hope it isn't dumb Yoshi from Sunshine. Awesome Yoshi from SMW please.
More specifically; if I finish a level with Yoshi I want him to return to the hub world with me and then enter the next level with me. Also different colour Yoshi with different powers.
Agreed; the powers thing seems confirmed, or at least Yoshi changes color for powers, or something.
I just hope he doesn't dissolve when he touches water; I found that slightly unnerving, and bothersome to boot. Hope he doesn't melt if he goes 30 seconds without eating anything, either.
Just plain old Yoshi... that's all I really ask for. NSMBWii seems to have it right, I hope this does, too.
I want more playable characters besides M&L, they should add Peach and Toad and make them control like in SMB2. That way you can have four ways of nicely varied gameplay. The way how Luigi controlled differently in SMG1 was a good first step.
Might be nice if Luigi and anyone else are selectable at the outset, too. It bugged me that Luigi had to be unlocked, more for Luigi's fans than my own desire, shy of curiosity. I prefer Mario.
I've got no problem with the game being relatively easy to "beat," so long as there are loads of extra stages for people who want a real challenge. That way both the unskilled and skilled can feel satisfied.
This. Be nice if something like the Grand Finale Galaxy wasn't so far hidden.
Just want to add, I agree with some of the stuff about difficulty balance, what was said about working a lot with little time to be playing the same part 50 times, and more red star, please.
Also, being able to keep power-ups would be cool. Fire Flower especially. Maybe make it pointer controlled, like Yoshi's tongue.
Hope they keep the SM64 Bowser level remix, and the Doomship theme.

The problem with Marioworld is a lot of the levels can be beaten by just running right continously and jumping at the right time.
Although my favorite 'secret' is one of the butter bridge levels with the chainsaw things on the moving platform lines. If you have Yoshi at the start, run and take off with the cape at the start, holding right the entire time. Now keep holding the cape button so you slowly come down.
Yoshi will proceed to jump off every chainsaw in succession until you land on the platforms on the other side of the level.

I like lives and game overs in games still. It tells me when I'm failing, when I'm failing really hard, and when maybe I should take a break.
plus it's a punishment for failure which makes absolute sense.

Yeah, I sort of used that as well. The Lives acted sort of as a timer for a couple levels, mostly Luigi's Purple Coins and the challenge stars. Given that I'll have around 20, when those are all gone I figure it's time to give it a rest for now.

I would actually like this to have some of the fan servise that Brawl had actually. I love the level designs, but once you beat a level, you should be able to pop on whatever retro music you want. I want there to be descriptions and designer notes and trophies for accomplishing certain things. Brawl set really high expectations for how rewarding a game can be to players.
