So I have a fantastic older HDTV with HDMI inputs, but I also have a laptop that is older, and just has an VGA output.
I have a little VGA to HDMI converter, but when I connect the laptop to the VGA to HDMI converter, then to the television, I get no signal or anything, and it saddens me greatly ;3
I am hoping that a solution can be found as I would love to dork around with the TV

Unless you're little VGA to DVI/HDMI thing cost a lot of money, it's because it's still an analogue signal (yeah, you can get Analogue DVI).
If your video card supports HD resolutions and your HDTV has an available component input, you could use a VGA to component cable instead. Otherwise Rook is correct, you need something (relatively expensive) that can do analog to digital conversion to change the analog VGA signal into a digital HDMI or DVI signal.
