This might be one of my most anticipated games this year.
New IGN videosHands on impressions:
The first thing I noticed about A Boy and His Blob on Wii is its remarkable style and beauty. The characters move around smoothly, transitions are seamless, backgrounds pop with 10 layers of parallax, and there's a lighting engine in place that allows for dynamic illumination of both the characters and the environments, so when fireflies flutter by, they cast light to the foregrounds and backgrounds as well as the unwitting heroes.
There will be some 15 different bean types in the final version of the game, which will also include a whopping 80 levels, 40 of them special challenge stages, and take most gamers at least 10 hours to complete. Some of the different transformations I saw include, of course, the ladder and a hole that allow the boy to climb up to otherwise unattainable areas or to drop through floors respectively. But also a parachute to glide across chasms, an anvil to break through stone barriers, a hippity-hop to bounce over obstacles, a shield to protect against enemies and projectiles, and more. There's a lot of variation as well as both genuine strategy and puzzle-solving in order to advance through the lush scenery that surrounds the duo. Sure, early on there are some straightforward challenges, but as Velasco took me through the demo, I noticed the puzzles becoming increasingly difficult to the point where I found myself scratching my head as I attempted to figure them out.
Although my play time with the title was short, it was more than enough to convince me that WayForward is definitely onto something with this lovable re-imagining of the two-decades-old David Crane game. At this point, I really only have a few concerns, most of them related to polish. I would like to see the character control tightened up every so slightly before release -- as it stands, it's a little loose. Also, after you've transformed the blob into, say, a ladder, you have to press a button to call him back to you before you can assign transform him again, which seems a bit more complex than it needs to be. I'm hoping that WayForward simplifies it so that you won't need to call the sidekick back before setting into motion his next transformation. And I'd like to see a little more "oomph!" put into the jump/land animation. Really, though, these are by and large nitpicks and I am generally pretty pleased with the title the studio has come up with. If this is a sign of things to come -- can you imagine an Out of This World remake with the same level of care that went into this? -- I'm definitely on the bandwagon.
So very beautiful. So many nice touches, like swinging vines and the deep parallax on the trees. I guess I'm a sucker for traditional hand animation.
I have to be honest, I agree with IGN on the polish issues. Jumping doesn't have enough oomph to it, and a personal peeve that I think could get grating is the kid's voice, going "BLOOOB" "HEY" "LISTEN" all the time. But at the same time I think it's a decent delivery and adds to the cute factor...I guess we'll see if I can stomach 80 levels of that.
Man, 80 levels, and it actually gets difficult at times. I don't know if I've seen puzzle platforming the way they're doing it since the days of Lost Vikings.

Thoughts on those?
This is the most adorable screenshot ever.
Time to get a job.
The only minor quibble I have is the kid yelling "BLOOOB" could get a bit old.
And yeah, the blob hugging picture is way too cute.

Good lord games were hard back then.
Yeah it was. To make it easier, though, if you chucked Bowling Ball down a few screens full of deadly marshmallows, the marshmallows will be gone when you run the Boy through those areas afterwards. Makes it a lot easier.

This is the one times where the game genie felt awesome. "ya, thats right, fuck you and your treasure! I'm gonna be invincible."
Still I am excited for this! I was just thinking the other day that we need more 2D puzzle-platformers.

I'm pretty sure it's disc, they talked about being mildly insulted every time they were asked "so, is this Wiiware?"
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I hope we don't have to deal with limited numbers of jelly beans like we did in the original, though. That made solving some of the puzzles such a bitch - you never knew which you were going to need, some of them you only had a couple to work with, and if you ran out, you lost. Hopefully this version will be a little more forgiving.
Based on what I've seen from the videos, it seems like you have unlimited jellybeans.
The yelling of 'BLOOOB!' might get annoying, but I think I can deal with it.

Yeah, it's really confusing when a video of Muramasa comes out, or NSMBWii is debuted, and people think it's Wiiware.

So yea, I'm really looking forward to this game, hopefully all games add a hug button after this is released.

From a brief look NSMB could easily be WiiWare, just look at Lost Winds. It all depends on game length/level size which you can't tell from screens.
My heart has grown three sizes this day.
