This is an information, questions, and discussion thread for the Dungeons and Dragons campaign setting Eberron. It's inspired by various Action-Fantasy and Noir settings. If
you like the following movies you will probably like Eberron:

What follows is my brief introduction to the world. Please ask questions in the thread, please discuss, please mock me for being a huge nerd for this setting.

The city of towers! The largest city on Khorvaire! Sits on top of a connection to a plane of air, it does, it's what lets 'em build the towers so high.

Well... You know you're on Khorvaire. You're in Breland, the greatest country there is. History lesson? What do I look like, the library of Korranberg? They charge thrones you know! You're from where? Earf? Where in the ever-bloody reaches of Shavharath is that? You know what, I don't want to know. I guess I'm the guy to ask, Kundak D'Kundarak, scion of House Kundarak and famous explorer. Here we go then...

Khorvaire.

You've got the Five Nations. They'd been at war, case you haven't heard, for a good hundred years, war ended about two years ago. Me? I think it's just another ceasefire.

There've been longer ones. Best thing we got out of that though, was the warforged.

Home of freedom, this is, got the best rights of any citizen on the continent, and don't let an Aundairian tell you different. Or a thrane, buncha brainwashed zealots they are.

Breland though, we came out of the war strong, and Boranel's the best king on the continent. We've got industry and lots of babies where the other nations are left with wasted resources and years of war. And we gave a home to those Cyrans, too, so can't fault our charity. And we've got Sharn, dont' forget that.

The thranish love their silver flame, they do, personally I've heard a bit too much about it. Those damn Pamphlets. The country's run by a twelve year old girl that speaks for the magical damn fountain of fire they all worship, that and a council of geezers. Anywho, they hate the Karrns something fierce. I don't know, it's hard to distinguish between the country and the religion for me, that whole Theocracy thing. That's the word, right, theocracy? Don't act strange, either, or they'll try to exorcise you.

Aundair, aye, it's beautiful place. Lots of wizards too. They like old stuff, though, old ways of doing things. Lost half their country to the druids too, deserved it I hear from the way they was being treated. Anyway, lots of farms and knights and castles and such. Floating wizard college too.

I think the cold is what drove them mad, you know, up there. They worship the Undead. It's insanity. They even went as far as to raise an army of the damn monsters when a plague took them in the middle of the war. Sure, they've officially severed their ties with the Blood of Vol, that damn cult, but it smacks of the Dark Six.

Ain't nobody go to Cyre anymore, except for madmen and madmen looking for treasure. The horrors that come out of that place, you just... it ain't natural. And wounds don't heal and grass don't grow. It exploded, you see, cyre, least that's what Shield always tells me.

Disappeared in a wall of mist, a wave of silent death. The mist is still there. Stopped right on the borders, swallowed the Cyrans whole. Nobody knows why. Except maybe the Dragons. They're not telling, either. There're monsters, too, it's filled with monsters. Like the Lord of Blades.

The most he's said all week, and he mentioned the damn Lord of Blades. Told you it was bad luck. A Host-forsaken place if there is one.

And that's the Five Nations. There're other places on Khorvaire too, how about I list them for you and you ask me about them as you're interested, aye?

There's...

Zilargo, the Gnomish Homeland.
Darguun, the Goblinoid nation, not that Khorvaire wasn't theirs long before it was the Humans'
The Eldeen Reaches, where all them crazy druids live
The Mror Holds, buncha dwarves fightin over the same mountains they been fightin over since forever
The Talenta Plains, crazy barbarian dinosaur-ridin' halflings
Valenar, crazy barbarian ancestor-worshippin' elves (Damn fine horses though)
Droaam, monsters, all of them, ruled by hags. They do call themselves a country though, they've got diplomats and everything.
Q'Barra, buncha crazy frontiersmen living in a lizard infested jungle.
The Lhazaar Principalities, basically, they're all pirates and don't trust a single one.
The Shadow Marches, it's a swamp filled with Orcs and Half-Orcs, you'll get so lost even their vaunted Mark of Finding won't be able to dig you out.
There's also The Demon Wastes, but I can't say I've ever been there and I can't say I ever want to.
and lastly Aerenal, which is technically a small continent but is really just home to a buncha crazy un-undead worshipping elves. They call themselves Undying.

Then you've got the other Continents.

The continent of Giants, of Mystery. It's a damn good place to stumble across a cache of dragonshards, get filthy rich, and open up a spiretop bar in Sharn too if you ask me. There's only one city, and you'll technically have to to through the Brelish government to traffic any artifacts in or out. Oh, and look the hell out for any Drow you see them. They'll sacrifice you soon as look at you.

Dragons, a whole continent of them as I understand it. Been there? Do I look stupid to you? You have to get past their horde of barbarian worshippers first for Onatar's sake. And then, it's a continent of dragons.

I been there, once, we snuck in you see. It's where them inspired come from, home of your people, too. They rule the place for sure... I don't think I ever want to go back. Sometimes I got nightmares about it. They seem nice enough but... just... I can't explain it.

Oh, and it's where those Kalashtar folk come from too, don't know where they live with all those Inspired and other Riedrans about though.

Please ask anything you need/want to know, I've got everything Eberron published except for a bunch of the Novels. (Novels aren't 'canon' in Eberron like they are in Forgotten Realms.) If you guys want more sections added to the OP just request them. I could do like, good/evil/neutral/strange/ugly organisation lists if people want them. Eberron is just so huge that it's hard for me to figure out what's useful to know.

As far as 4E materials for Eberron go, you've got two books:

Eberron Campaign Setting (Your DM/World Book)
and
Eberron Player's Guide
Which contains the Artificer, Warforged, Kalashtar, and Changeling, along with feats and Eberron backgrounds.

    The valenar are fantastic.

    For those of you not in the know, they're an army of Ancestor worshipping elves that like to pick fights because they want to prove they're as awesome as their ancestors were. And they ride horses and use double scimitars. Do not mess with them.

    Although my first PbP character ever was a Valenar cleric of the Ancestors who wielded a +1 construct bane adamantine double scimitar. The warforged character in the group stayed very far away from him. :lol:

    Well, there're some about...

    You've got your Khorvaire elves, as they like to be called. Graceful, rich, well... rich is it really. The humans have a fascination with 'em I guess. Most of them migrated from Aerenal thousands of years ago and they've lived among the humans ever since. Where do you think all the Bloody Half-Elves came from?

    Happen often? You seem to be mistaken lad. Half-elves is their own race, sure you get the occasional human and elf pairin' these days but it's, well, society just doesn't approve of it the way it used to. I don't know... well, the half elves though, they're their own people, got their own dragonmarks. Two of 'em, actually, Storm and Warding. Don't mess with them Medani though, they're vengeful...

    Other elves? Well, you've got your Aerenal Elves,

    Freaky, eh? They don't mess around either. I've read their histories, their undying court is the closest thing to a god that walks Khorvaire, their clerics, paladins, I've even heard of a sect of holy assassins that draw power from it. Fought a war with the dragons, they did, over what I don't know. But that they're still around after fighting a war with dragons... well...

    I think that tells you something.

    Then you've the Valenar, or the Tairnadal if you ask them, buncha cocky scimitar wieldin' elves what think they're as good a warrior as a dwarf. Well, I'm going to admit, some of them are. They worship their ancestors, draw power from them too. Carved a nation out of Cyre's flank in the war, well, them and the Hobgoblins. Either way... don't underestimate them.

    Then there're the dark elves, and well, I think that's a story for another time.

    All of Eberron's elves are pretty cool. From the crazy vaguely Mongol Elves to the spooky jungle dwelling necro elves. Hell, the half elves who have taken up "Half Elf Pride!" attitudes are also pretty damn cool.

    One of the few things I liked about DDO was the fact that dwarves didn't all have to look like Cousin It. I remember making a dwarf rogue named Brick who had a flame orange quasi-Mr. T hairdo and spectacles.

    Edit: and it looked cool, is my point. Plus DDO was Eberron.

    Starting a campaign in Eberron called Aspects of the Sovereign Host.

    Its gonna be a long one.

    Basically the just of it is the characters were ripped from the forgotten realm by the god Kol Korran to restore the "good" gods to their former power and to restore balance to thier world. To do so the adventurers must aquire 5 aspects. Each of these is found in a location on or near Khorvaire. I have the location of three nailed down. The Aspect of Creation will be in Charn, deep beneath the city in the area known as the forge. The Aspect of Sorrow will lay somewhere in the mournland. Another aspect will lie at the northern tip of Xen'drik.

    There will be a massive plot twist at the end that will make the characters feel horrible about themselves and then they will have an opportunity to strike back at thier betrayer.
    They are actually gathering the five lost aspects of the dark six, and the sixth is found in the deeds of who they think is Kol Korran. He is actually The Mokery, god of betrayal. The aspects are the parts of the gods that make them flawed. For example the aspect of creation is the lost aspect of the Keeper, who can only destroy life, never create it

    Most of the Eberron character's I've played or seen played would tell Kol Korran to fuck right the hell off now that they're in a world where gods don't just parade around mortals as dress up dolls.

    I really don't see why the PC's should care that random supernatural entity has said they need to do what it wants, especially after it's ripped them away from all their family, friends and world they knew. They are either remarkably gullible or de facto slaves. Neither sounds that fun. I suppose you could take the attitude that nobody in this (Eberron) world is a real person so they can do whatever they want and all they want is to get back to the "real" world. That could be cool if rather fucked up sociopathic kind of way.

    Well, that and,

    There's no Eberron fluff that the gods speak directly to people,

    ever.

    Everyone who has ever been spoken to directly by a god is regarded as incredibly wacko (Silver flame is the exception, seeing as it is a physical thing) and from a meta-fluff view there's no proof that any of the Eberron gods even exist as physical entities.

    EDIT: I'm really not trying to shoot you down this hard, but it is a thread on the setting and I'm keeping stuff straight for people who don't know Eberron.

    I see the gods in Eberron as being like the archetypes in some of the Tim Powers books: totally beyond mortal comprehension, although it's possible to project a face onto that form.

    The hands off attitude of the gods is one of the best parts of Eberron. It actually adds some ambiguity and complexity into the whole religion thing.

    It also lets, say the LG paladin of the Silver Flame think that the LG priest of the Seven is actually an appropriate foe because he's doing it wrong.

    Positive Contribution: Shurakai if you replace the dark god with one of the Rakasha lords it'd fit much better. It'd also have a campaign long signs that what they're doing is fucked up if they can figure it out which can actually lead to that end of campaign pay off when they do figure out they done fucked up good.

    To be fair to the Silver Flame did this in 3.x where they were "Always" evil at the time....except for the boars and tigers.

    Jesus, there was an Extreme Explorer prestige class right there in the campaign setting. They're practically giving you everything but the fedora and the badass theme music.

    (Also, in defense of the Silver Flame, I think Baker stated that it was the first time that lycanthropy was actually virulent--i.e., in the past, mommy werewolves and daddy werewolves were needed to make baby werewolves, but with the plague, it was actually being transferred through bites)

    I realize that the storyline isn't exactly what is supposed to happen in the universe, but I like to play fast and loose with stuff like that when I design a campaign. And of course neither the players nor the characters play are familliar with Eberron, so how do they know gods dont interact with them? That could be a good hook for the betrayal/twist of the storyline though, to find out that in fact they weren't dealing with gods but smaller beings that hold great power.

    It is the first major campaign many of us have done, so I want to make each of the characters actions seem world-shaking in scope so they get the point that they are important to the story.

    Speaking of 3rd edition... if I read all the books that were published on the subject for 3rd edition and ignore all of the maths and combat stuff will it still be accurate with the stuff they are putting out now?

    I've looked over the maps and descriptions of locations and they seem to be fairly in-step with the new adventurers guide.

    As far as I know, there have been no substantial changes to the setting, only changes to what they focus on--i.e. they look a lot more at the Draconic Prophecy this time around (if I recall the last podcast correctly).
