So, toying with the idea of buying one of these, but I can't afford an HDTV as well.
Is there a decent VGA adapter for the thing that works with older monitors (ie not LCD)? (bearing in mind my location)
If not, how does the thing look with a regular scart lead? Does it come with one? Also, unlikely though it is, is there an RF adapter for the system?
Thanks.
I don't think any of the big 3 console makers have official RF adapters anymore. BUT, there are unofficial ones. I saw a PSX-PS2-PS3 universal adapter at EB games a while back.
Also, get infamous. And Valkyria chronicles.

What's an RF adapter? I'm not too sure on this terminology. Is that the old round input, like tv aerial input? I don't think there is an adapter for that but I haven't looked into it.
It comes with the red yellow white cables so any tv (crt or lcd) that supports those can do it. It also supports scart, funnily enough. It doesn't come with a scart cable though, and I haven't tried it.
Do you have a computer monitor that supports hdcp? If you do and it has a dvi input (I hope that's the right acronym) you can get a hdmi to dvi cable to hook it up to the monitor. (For sound see my longer explanation in the spoiler at end of post)
One thing that you have to keep in mind, some games wont support a non hd option. This is mostly online download games though so just try to remember that.
Also be wary of importing ps3 games for it. For example, I have a japanese ps3 which doesn't have a pal option. So when I got grand theft auto 4 I could not play it on my sdtv and had to finally get my ass into gear to get a hdmi to dvi cable to play it in 720 (which appears to not give a damn about region).
I dunno what other ps3s do.
Sound is trickier.
HDMI to DVI cable wont do sound, so you set the sound through the ps3's options to go through the red-yellow-white cable. Then you have to go pick up three bits of audio doohickey from a local audio shop: 1). a red-yellow-white to red-yellow-white extender/jack/thingy
2). another red yellow white cable that ends in a standard audio jack.
3). an audio jack to audio jack.
You put the ryw to ryw ends together then put the audio jack end of the second ryw cable into 3.
So it goes
Cable from ps3 into 2 into 1 into 3.
Then you plug some speakers that use the same audio jack (or headphones) into 3.

What's an RF adapter? I'm not too sure on this terminology.
A radio frequency modulator. A small box which takes a baseband signal and combines it with a carrier wave signal in order to output a modulated signal.
One of these, essentially:
It severely degrades the picture quality.
Do you have a computer monitor that supports hdcp? If you do and it has a dvi input (I hope that's the right acronym) you can get a hdmi to dvi cable to hook it up to the monitor.
I'm almost certain he has a CRT.
One thing that you have to keep in mind, some games wont support a non hd option. This is mostly online download games though so just try to remember that.
I'm pretty sure you're required to support a non-HD resolution.

I'm pretty sure this non-hd support isn't cross region, so at the very least, he might not be able to download from other stores.
ONLY HD content is completely region free, as far as I know. And even then, for example, I can't even install the pal stranglehold demo on my japanese ps3, which is ntsc only. I have no idea why.
I just checked my pal gta 4 box and just like I remembered: The hd options are region free and the sd option is only pal. No ntsc option on it.
So I'm just warning that this might be the reverse for a japanese or american game. I don't know.

That's fucking weird, Morninglord. I thought all PS3s were region-free.
I have a U.S. PS2 and imported a Hong Kong game, and have had no problems grabbing demos from HK, Japan and Europe.

For 720 and up I haven't found any problems except for the said stranglehold demo.
The machines are region free. Game makers are still allowed, if they choose, to put some kind of fuck the customers lock on their version of a game, which I'm assuming the stranglehold demo team chose to do. It's why I wont buy stranglehold!
In my case, I'm pretty sure that since it's japanese the machine doesn't have any standard definition pal abilities or converting software or whatever mumbojumbo it has to do. So it just doesn't understand the pal discs. It goes "Gimme ntsc noaw desu" and the pal discs say "@(@#$(*!@#NDKF*#" in reply.
But this isn't always the case.
Pal dmc4 worked. PAL Assassin's creed worked. PAL gta4 didn't work.
HD versions of all of these on my hdcp capable monitor always work for any game I've actually bought, but sometimes demos downloaded from the pal store wont talk the moonspeak with my machine and it has a sulk.

The PS3 in Eu comes with a the standard yellow composite video/phono audio cable and a Scart adapter to plug them in. With buying other cables it can also output S-Video and RGB Scart. RGB Scart is an significant improvement over composite, but still only SD.
Instead of spending money on VGA converters I would put that money towards a LCD computer screen.
It has HDMI in and the correct aspect ratio, which is a plus since the PS3 and many 16:10 screens can't adjust for the difference. The speakers are truly worthless though.

It's an NTSC>PAL issue that goes away if you're running your PS3 in HD which is a worldwide standard. I think that NTSC machines have issues with European PS1 games bought on the PSN because those are 50Hz (crappy).

Doesn't alllllways go away for demos tho.
Like I said, no stranglehold demo installing for me.
It can be a pain to find this out after I've downloaded a gigs worth of demo. We have internet caps here.

God that used to annoy the shit out of me with my 360. They did eventually add a 1680x1050 resolution option for that though.

The PS3 is region free, but that doesn't mean all games are region free. A game maker can still choose to implement software region locking in their game. I dunno if stranglehold is like that, but it certainly sounds that way.
It still amazes me how Sony made the PS3 region free. Such an awesome pro consumer move.
Pound for pound, the PS3 is the best hardware on the market. I'm amazed at how big of a 180 the PS3 is from the PS2. Sony used to have the worst hardware in the biz. Now they have the best, and most reliable.

All PS3 games are region-free, they will play on any PS3.
PAL PS3 games will output a standard def signal for display on a PAL SDTV, which is different than a NA or JP SD signal. A PAL game will therefor look scrambled on a NA SDTV (and vice versa).
HDMI is a worldwide standard, so any PAL/JP/NA game will be identical if the output is HD.
That said, I've been playing my PS3 on a 27" SDTV for a year and I have zero complaints. Would I like an HDTV? Sure. But for now I'd rather spend my money on games.

Though the only thing I'm likely to import would be Demon's Souls.
Also, I had no choice but to downgrade my TV awhile ago, and I just ran it through my VCR instead of looking for an RF switch. Don't mock me.
