I think you quoted the wrong post.

Anyways, I just got my Fanatec Wheel from UPS, but of course I wont have the game until tomorrow. For now I have to go out to Home Depot to get a couple of screws to replace some that came with the shifter adapter for the wheelstand. The ones they provided turned out to be too short.

A reminder. If you wanted to get onto the PA Forza player list add PAForza3 to your friends.

Couldn't you load up a big track like Fujimi Kaido or Nurburgring and get it?

Yes, but I still found it very time-consuming and un-fun. You have to hit around 1,000 points on basically every corner around the track. You can rewind if you mess up, but any wall tap or turning too far kills your score.

Of course, I could've just not done it but I got hooked in to this un-fun task on some completionist binge. I hate when that happens to me.

In some ways, this is why I like multiplayer achievements. I know I'll probably never get the "win ten zillion matches", so I don't even bother acting like it's a goal. When it's a single player achievement that requires perfectly jumping through some hoops, I get a lot more annoyed.

See, I was kinda looking forward to the whole drifting aspect of the game until I realized how bad I was at it using the MS wheel in the demo. Hopefully there's some tuning tricks that'll help make things easier for me in that regard, because PGR kinda corrupted me with its notion of bomb-ass wicked powerslides.

When this hits 100, I won't be back to make a new one - too time consuming considering the game is out. So anyone can make a new one when it's time...

I found it easier to use the controller to do the drift points thing, as I just mostly kept it in the same gear all the way around and I didn't like yanking the wheel from lock to lock hundreds of times. But the wheel did seem to give good feedback, it was just that I had to keep whanging it back and forth and the e-brake and rewind buttons were much more convenient on the controller.

I'm back to regular racing now, and I am really enjoying these two car, point-to-point races on Fujimi and Amalfi.

So I got the MS Wheel the other night and raced a Ferrari F40 around the Nurburgring with zero assists and manual gears... I wasn't very good, about 9mins 30ish.. but damn if it wasn't the best gaming experience I have had in years!! :D

I read somewhere that there was something in the screw holes you could pull out to make it fit? I forget exactly.

    Indeed. Hungry for data!

Did you get the clubsport pedals and 6-speed shifter? Or the lower-end (but still awesome) package?

I went and got new screws and it is all setup now. It's pretty awesome though the shifter really stands out as being a cheap piece of shit next to the wheel and clubsport pedals. The gas pedal on the clubsport is way too soft for my liking, and you can't tighten it much. So hopefully they come out with a new spring or something.

The shifter is definitely the weak link. It can be hard to find the gear you want (unless that gear is 3rd) and the clicking is annoying. I am definitely hoping they come out with a clubsport shifter. Oh right, and the clubsport pedals are actually moving around a bit on the rennsport wheelstand which is a bit disappointing. I think I will just order the pedal stopper. I will try to take some pictures or video later.

As bad as that all may sound overall its an awesome setup. For some reason both my roommate and I are having trouble braking. I mean...we forget to. I don't know why.

I was planning on getting the clubsport set and the wheelstand. Are you sure there isn't something you can tighten down to keep the pedals from shifting around? Maybe you can remove a part that is meant for floor use and use those mounting screws to bolt it to the stand?

I'd love to hear more about how the shifter works, because that really concerns me. In the [vidurl=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VID_ndJJ3pI]inside sim racing[/vidurl] review you can hear the shifter clicking, and somewhere else (I forgot) someone mentions the shifter makes it difficult to go from third to second. Those things really concern me.

Man, I wish Gamestop would ship it early to people who ordered it online so I didn't need to wait longer than everyone else.

Ah, well, maybe my new hard drive will show up first. I'm gonna hack a 7,200 RPM drive into this thing to cut the shit out of load times.

Daed, aren't they patching the 360 to allow them to detect and prevent use of unauthorized storage devices? Don't get yourself banned from Live!

    1. They're blocking the Datel memory card, they're doing nothing with hard drives
    2. They've never banned anyone from Live for doing the hard drive mod and it's been around for years
    3. I'll be god damned if I'm going to pay a 200% markup on a hard drive that I can only load up with paid-for Microsoft content

I've been thinking of doing this for a while and now that the tool supports 7200 RPM drives it pushed me over the edge.

You make a convincing argument. Tempting, and I have 320 GB 7200 RPM laptop drives laying around.

But my gamertag is my first and last name, man. I really don't want to lose it.

    *torn*

Either way, you make it sound like it's not really a risk at all, so I'll stop telling people the sky is falling if they mention they're going to do that.

Hmm, well I don't really see any better way to mount the clubsport pedals to the wheelstand without drilling holes. I think the pedal stopper is probably the best way to go. Drilling would be fine but I expect people of a lot of different heights to be using this thing (my buddy is 7' tall...I am 5'7") so I think the adjustable route is probably better.

As for the shifter, it definitely takes some getting used to. It isn't bad, but it certainly isn't the calibre of the rest of the unit. Both my roommate and myself have also experienced it reporting the wrong gear to the game. Thats pretty much as big a problem as a shifter can have. If it happens again I will leave it in gear so I can shoot some video to show you. The shifter will literally be sitting in 4th gear, but the game will show 5th. It only happened to him once, and to me once, but thats twice it has happened in the last hour and a half or so. I may have just received a bad unit.

It only works with Western Digital Scorpio (and VelociRaptor, apparently, but that seems like overkill) drives right now, but yeah, it seems pretty safe. At least, I figured that if anyone was ever banned for it, they'd go to the various forums where people talk about this sort of thing and start bitching, and then more people who weren't affected by it would start bitching, and so on and so forth. I've seen no bitching, and I've been following this hack for a while. The internet is sort of a focal lens for bitching, as a quick glance at, say, the ForzaCentral forums can show you.

edit: oh, and you can only use sizes that Microsoft has released, so if you have a 320GB drive, the console will only see 250GB of it (was 120 until like last week). God dammit, Microsoft. Sony doesn't make the users jump through flaming fucking hoops.

You know what I want from a shifter? Only once I played at an arcade and go kart facility that had a sit-down Race Drivin' cabinet, and it had a better shifter that included reverse. More importantly, if you tried to put the car into gear without the clutch engaged, you'd get a constant grinding feeling in the shifter that actually stopped the gear selector from moving all the way into gear. Then as soon as the clutch was depressed the gear would engage and the gear selector would move the rest of the way into position.

Clearly the shifter CAN get data that tells it a gear shift shouldn't be allowed, because it makes that weird noise. A design like that old Race Drivin' cabinet used should certainly be possible. I don't know if there's a market for it, or how much it would cost, or really ANY of the huge set of new product development questions that need to be answered. I just know I'd pay an extra $100 for a clubsport set that included that, plus a mounting method with more flexibility than the "chopsticks".

Actually one question for you, cakemikz:

This link has specs for their wheel products, and it says:

    Different mechanics for each pedal:
    Clubsport: no
    non-Clubsport: yes

    ABS vibration on brake pedal
contactless high precision sensors for gas and clutch
adjustable load cell pressure sensor for brake
    adjustable spring strength on pedals
    Clubsport: yes
    non-Clubsport: no

What do they mean, different mechanics for each pedal? That seems kinda vague, especially compared with the specific pedal-motion descriptions for what Clubsport DOES have.

That is difficult to say because I haven't used the normal pedals. But if I had to guess I would say its because the clutch and the gas on the clubsports use the same spring mechanism...though they definitely feel a lot different. I wish I was more competent with this stuff so I could give you more information.

There's a shifter adapter you can order with the wheelstand if you want a more solid mounting.

And cakemikz, maybe the shifter issues you're having will get resolved in a "break it in" sort of way after some initial usage?
