I canceled my WoW subscription 4 weeks ago after 3.5 years. I really enjoyed my time in WoW and it was truly a great game for me for a really long time.
I still like to read the WoW Chat thread here just to see what's going on in game and I find it very interesting to see what people talk about these days. It's really intriguing to see so many people playing this game just to get achievements and mounts via Vanilla WoW and TBC achievements.
The three main reasons I stop playing WoW is because they ruined PVP (imo, keep in mind my main was a shaman), the lack of new content because I do not consider adding achievements revolved around doing old content again as "new", and leveling new classes lost its luster for me.
Are a lot of you actually having fun doing the old content again just to get achievement or you actually bored when you do it? I know I did not enjoy earning achievements that were based on old content, especially after the Love Fools event and never getting the 1 candy I needed.
I'm curious how my fellow PA'ers forsee WoW's future. After I went through WotLK content a few times I got bored of the 10 and 25 mans, but I really enjoyed the heroics. I personally thought WoW was going in a direction of finding ways to get people to do old content again and from what I'm reading it appears I was right. Agree, disagree?
It's getting to the point that they might just want to make the old world instances entirely non-elite/design them to be solo'd / duo'd or so. Trim the trash packs and let people use them as personal questing/exp and gear farming zones, were they so inclined.
Unless things have changed dramatically since I left, groups were rarely entirely level appropriate anyway, so why not just cut the 'bringing a level 70-80 along to speed things up' middleman out of the equation and let them become something doable on a smaller scale? Now that (I assume) even BC content is likely done like dinner (aside from a never ending swell of death knight alts?), making old world 5 mans 1-2 mans seems like a good way to keep alts (especially with refer-a-friend going) a touch more interesting.
Of course, after doing those instances dozens (if not hundreds?) of times over the past half decade, I suppose they could include free days for completing them and people would probably still avoid them like the plague, so perhaps I'm just crazy.
Given the number of times I've completed BRD, I wouldn't rule that out as a possibility.
Edit: of course, I suppose that also runs the risk of making players think that they're entitled to anything and everything they want for little or no effort, but then again, we already have the arenas for that. HIYOOO!
I kid, I kid, but I guess it is a consideration. On the other hand, trying to 5 man the early content in a level appropriate fashion isn't something I'd wish upon people I actively disliked, hefty nerfs in place or not.
I've been saying this for a while: Normal mode = non-elites (excluding maybe bosses). Heroic mode = elite. It would trounce all the dreams of all the people still holding out for heroic deadmines, but it would prevent having to leave all those juicy instance quests behind.
You do realize they added a new raid (plus a Black Morass/Violet Hold style raid next patch), a new battleground next patch and another daily quest hub (with more added to it next patch)?
wait.. you went through 10 and 25 man content in WotLK a few times and are bored? exactly what do you consider through? Was your guild clearing Ulduar already?
I know I'm not in the best of raiding guilds, but mine has only cleared up through crazy cat lady on 10 man, and I have yet to get bored with the game...

In my day, "daily quests" involved joining PuGs for UBRS and Stratholme because you were on your 75th try for your tier 0 pants or chest and they STILL wouldn't drop.
In my day, "daily quests" involved joining PuGs for UBRS and Stratholme because you were on your 75th try for your tier 0 pants or chest and they STILL wouldn't drop.
Repeat for hours every day.
This, so much this. I somehow managed to complete Tier 0 for my alliance Paladin, ally Rogue never saw Shadowcraft Chest or Shoulders.
Did Tier 0 on my horde priest (and the whole 0.5 line as well). She's still at 60, sitting in yellow Devout with Anathema.
I did the same thing though, to defend the guy. Got a character to 80, did naxx (which I had already done at 60) and got bored.
I only resubbed recently to play the game from the other faction's side (something I hadn't done) and to relevel from level 1 through azeroth (which is still my favorite content).
I liked the heroics, because I like 5 man content, but it felt superfluous at level 80 because you could pretty quickly and easily do 10 man or even 25 man naxx and gear up pretty easily. On top of that, the 5 man instances are all pretty short. I'm one of the few who liked Strat and UBRS back in the day though. I like big winding, complicated instances that encourage exploration the first few times you go through them, and still hold a promise of item upgrades, rare monster spawns, etc. even after you've done them a bunch. When I unsubbed the only reason I had to run them was to grind rep so I could get an enchant.
I'm looking forward to getting to 80 on my new guy to check out the argent tournament, and leveling in northrend was a lot of fun. But being level 80 for a few days/weeks will probably be enough for me this time around just like it was last time.
I don't really remember or want to remember that era of playing the game because I spent most of it hopped up on pain killers and on a respirator
So much fun for two years I was more than happy to be rid of that device

I ask far to often on my hunter and priest for pugs to Mc to get the two pieces I need to do those quests. Most of the time it's some level 60ish death knight saying it's not a gear run sigh

That sucks. I remember it took me the longest time trying to get the Eye on my priest because we kept cycling in priest applicants on MC runs to gear/test them and mine was an alt so I had to pass.
You do realize they added a new raid (plus a Black Morass/Violet Hold style raid next patch), a new battleground next patch and another daily quest hub (with more added to it next patch)?
Yes, and I unsubscribed about 2 weeks after Ulduar came out. Problem is, it took almost 6 months from the time WotLK came out for them to add anything new (atleast what I considered to be new from my previous post).
By the time Ulduar came out, I was very bored with raiding Naxx. Yeah, playing Ulduar was cool, but I personally went a good 2 months with nothing interesting to do since I had played through all the WotLK stuff enough times at the 4 month point. Remember, I almost stop PvPing entirely because WotLK really made playing my shaman very frustrating.
You don't see the daily quest hubs as regurgitated content? The very essence behind daily quests is repetition of exactly the same thing. I know, I know, that's part of the whole MMO experience, but I never felt the dailies in WotLK were fun (I do agree that some in BC were fun).
The new mount tournament sounds pretty cool, but the new BG doesn't excite me after the way Wintergrasp turned out, or should I say the lag in Wintergrasp turned out.
I'm not trying to say WoW is a bad game. I loved WoW for a long time. I'm more curious on how people feel about the type of content they are adding and whether or not it's actually fun or is it just ways for the game to prey on the addictive nature of getting items.
I'm more curious on how people feel about the type of content they are adding and whether or not it's actually fun or is it just ways for the game to prey on the addictive nature of getting items.
Honestly? It's a little of both. Daily quests seem to be very polarized; people either love them or hate them.
Personally, because of my propensity to get fucked by the RNG in pretty much every possible situation, I enjoy the idea of daily quests and incrementally-earned gear and items. Frankly I think the WHOLE game should be that way. Time invested should equal rewards, that way you don't have people getting the lion's share of the loot and others walking away empty handed every single week. The Argent Tournament itself is decent in some ways and a boring slog in others (jousting...yeah...), but at least you're earning your way towards something (gear, tabards, pets, mounts) rather than just jerking off the RNG for another day (still no fishing hat...).
In any case, it's the nature for MMOs to be veritable hamster wheels, so for those who haven't tired of the process yet, it's still entertaining.
Honestly since Ulduar came out I haven't have the energy or drive to focus on anything else but beating the hell out of that place.
Our guild is -decent- but there are fights we've had to beat our heads against...
Of course, all of those fights have been nerfed to the point where we can clear up to Mimiron in one night typically. Though depending on our tank comp sometimes Thorim can be a pain.... Like last night we had the Druid who still can't grasp "DO NOT TURN YOUR BACK ON THE ENEMY, JUST BACKPEDAL" and can't out threat the healers sometimes.
Other than that we pretty much can cruise straight to Mimiron, we can consistently down him, rip through Vezax and usually get a good night of wipes on Yogg(I'm hoping this week will involve him dying).

I thought it was funny that after only 2 weeks of Ulduar you still thought there was no new content. Naxx was designed to be an intro back into raiding, a first step if you will. Having to wait only 6 months for an entire new raid instance is not that long of a time. I could understand unsubscribing when Naxx was the only option, but to do so AFTER they patched in new content makes no sense, especially when the gripe was there was no new content.
Dailies are repetitive yes, but I did find some of them entertaining. the Hodir's Spear one was kind of neat, same with the Frostborne one. Oracles/Frenzyheart/Stormpeaks for either the egg/jar/bag of spoils offered at least a chance at a mount or costume...to each their own I guess.
Curious about anyone here who has gotten the 100 mount achievement. I know Ish has. What do you guys think about the fact that soon, most people will be able to buy a dragonhawk from the tournament? Even though it is gonna be a different skin from what we see now?
I'm kinda both ways on this. One, I'm only at 57 mounts right now, and the thought of trying for a 100 is really fucking daunting. But the mount is awesome. I just basically get mounts when I can, and not bother trying to grind it. It is one of the most grindy achievements there is, and the dragonhawk should only be obtainable from it, since it is very unique.
On the other hand, since I've always wanted a dragonhawk, it is pretty cool that soon, I will be able to ride one. Thoughts?
On my hunter, I had every piece of Beastmaster except for the shoulders. I was using Black Dragonscale. Shoulders just would not drop in LBRS.
So I was running LBRS once with myself and another Hunter, Hodim. Hodim was a bit of a dick. He knew how bad I wanted the BM shoulders. Just so bad to finish the set. He was in my god damn guild too.
OMG THEY DROP
From Hodim: Give me 50g and I won't roll on them.
To Hodim: Fuck you.
I lost the roll.
...never did get those shoulders.
A long while later, and a couple guilds later for both of us, he stole his guild's gbank and changed name and hoped no one would notice. Eventually after enough ridicule, he transfered.
When something drops that I want, and it's a rare drop, I usually offer gold
"i'll give you 100g not to roll"
especially when only one other person is rolling on it
so worth it most of the time
the majority of my rolls are rolled on by nonclassers, though
consistently when i was running kara with my hunter, warriors would roll on ranged weapons i needed after i would say multiple times "i am hunter, only ranged in group, can i please have that i need it" three warriors roll on it "lol didn't notice you were a hunter" "lol i didn't have my vent headset on"
i saw that crossbow drop a good 5 times when i was the only ranged in group before I got it, fucking pricks
the prince bow only dropped when there were other ranged in group and they always won the roll
happens to all of us though, i suppose
i find i have fantastic rolls on greens and blues but never epics

I paid 314g for my Shadowcraft Chestpiece. On my 57th run through UBRS it finally dropped, I paid the other rogue not to roll on it. It was the most amount of money I ever spent on anything up until then and it remains the best purchase I've ever made in this game to this day.
although on all of this, when you think about the nature of random and your real chance of getting anything, DKP really does make sense, or at least flattens the luck out a good deal

Yeah, blast those melee classes rolling on ranged weapons they derive no benefit from whatsoever. It's not like hunters roll on melee weapons
I mean if they were guildies, fine. They should give you preferential treatment. In a pug I don't know why you should expect anyone to defer to you when it's an upgrade for them too. It'd be nice, but you don't pug to make friends.

It is burned into my mind as one of the greatest memories I have of my time playing this game. And as anti-RNG as DKP is, I still loathe the system. I won't go into my whole shpiel here, in case Forar might be reading, for he is the champion of DKP, and I am its greatest detractor and to say we've "been down that road before" is something of an understatement.

warriors shouldn't roll on hunter's main weapons and hunters shouldn't roll on warrior's main weapons
i have never rolled on a weapon that wasn't for my main class and was preferential to another because I am a decent person and like to get reinvited to groups. similarly i never "ninja" ore/herb spawns, i usually try to roll if we both get there at the same time. I like to think that some people have some sort of respect and line of ethics, i could be mistaken.
and at least half of those were guild runs, two different (albeit large) guilds, and almost every time the person was kicked from the guild for it, the other instances were other guild runs (not my own guild) but they usually let the person slide because I wasn't a guildy. I rarely ever pug.
people are just assholes
edit: ultimately I think rolling on a gun when you're a warrior, when there is a hunter that needs it more than you, is on par to a fury/arms warrior rolling on a shield(when there was no dualclassing) when the tank needs it. this is or was frowned upon largely in most groups I'd been in
warriors shouldn't roll on hunter's main weapons and hunters shouldn't roll on warrior's main weapons i have never rolled on a weapon the wasn't for my main class and was preferential to another because I am a decent person and like to get reinvited to groups.
I don't know why you keep saying this like melee roll on ranged weapons for decoration. It's a stat stick, and is a dps increase. It's also entirely possible that a ranged weapon could be a bigger dps increase for him than it is for you, depending. What do you do then?
similarly i never "ninja" ore/herb spawns, i usually try to roll if we both get there at the same time. I like to think that some people have some sort of respect and line of ethics, i could be mistaken.
That's not similar. That's just weird. If you wanted to be courteous you'd just move on to the next node.
and at least half of those were guild runs, two different guilds
Loot council is so easily abusable. DKP is stupid too. Case in point:
My guild wanted to use DKP for Ulduar 10 (supposedly to make it more fair) and we have currently 3 paladins and a priest with over 300 dkp waiting for their token drop (I love you DK token drop, we see you every week). Seriously, every week that goes by I just see that number balloon up even more.
If you're willing to admit that it is completely ok for a hunter to roll on a warrior's sword, then we have no argument here, my argument is that it's not ok, but disagreeing is fine since i probably won't have to group with you. This whole argument is diminished to nothing, though, if you have a good leader that explains the rolling rules explicity before you even begin. These guild leaders/officers with actual ability are rare in my experience. (the one really good guild leader I had got into a drunken rage one night and deleted the guild, some crazy shit about his girlfriend or something complaining, it was really shocking)
I feel like rolling is more fair since you both sort of deserve it. I don't do it to be courteous, I don't personally give two shits about that other random guy. I do it because I have a code of ethics and prize fairness, and like to think that an ore isn't so important that I should act like an asshole to get it.
"Stop raiding with purely self serving twits"
It's a little difficult to do this since people don't use resumes in WoW, as I said the person was usually booted for not listening, or given a firm warning, there just tends to be a lot of assholes, or I just am very unlucky, probably both

Loot council definitely isn't infallible, but if you have a good council it works well. The trick here is that there are fewer people in the mix.
I know our loot council doesn't allow items to be just 'given' to another member of the council (unless there is no competition), typically if it would go to the LC member over the next most viable person, they do a roll off between the two.
Also on occassion when people are equally deserving they will call for a roll off.
If you're willing to admit that it is completely ok for a hunter to roll on a warrior's sword, then we have no argument here, my argument is that it's not ok, but disagreeing is fine.
I feel like rolling is more fair since you both sort of deserve it. I don't do it to be coureous, I do it because I have a code of ethics and like to be fair.

if you are rolling on an item that is a DPS/Tank/Heal increase for you, and you DPS/Tank/Heal for that run, then it makes sense. I honestly have not seen any item in the game that said "this is for X class" that wasn't tier gear of some kind. With the exception of healers rolling on items with +hit, if the piece will increase your spec's stats then why can't you roll on it? especially before you could dual spec.
As to your second part, people that behave this way are fairly transparent in regards to looting styles, it shouldn't take much time to find out who rolls like an asshole and just boot them/stop inviting them. (most times you can figure this out just by stating the loot rules of the run and seeing peoples reactions) I would say the fault lies with your raid leader not being clear as to how loot would be distributed, and who/what class had priority.
**edit**
I see you have amended your post. Yes it all boils down to the rules set in place prior to the run. if those are solid, then there is a fairly small margin for error in loot distribution.
Which brings up a good topic of conversation - guilds
I've always wanted to be a raiding guild leader, but could only be a guild leader for leveling guilds (which was pretty successful, titled Classy Gentlemen) because i had no set schedule, up until now
What codes of conduct, demeanor, incentives, ranking techniques, recruiting techniques etc. do you all advise concerning creating and maintaining a raiding guild
obviously cool/clever guild names that people want under their name is a good start
(i partially think this deserves its own thread, but i won't take such liberty)

Well hang on. The problem with "it's okay for everyone to roll on everything as long as it benefits them in some way" theory is that there are things like weapon specs which muck that theory up a bit. For example, hunters can equip daggers, but it's a rogue's bread and butter more often than not. The same is true in reverse for ranged weapons and hunters. I, as a rogue, would never roll on a ranged weapon over a hunter unless he/she had a better weapon or it was a sidegrade at best. There are "primary weapons" for a lot of classes, and common sense dictates which would benefit whom the most.

consistently when i was running kara with my hunter, warriors would roll on ranged weapons i needed after i would say multiple times "i am hunter, only ranged in group, can i please have that i need it" three warriors roll on it "lol didn't notice you were a hunter" "lol i didn't have my vent headset on"
i saw that crossbow drop a good 5 times when i was the only ranged in group before I got it, fucking pricks
the prince bow only dropped when there were other ranged in group and they always won the roll
happens to all of us though, i suppose
i find i have fantastic rolls on greens and blues but never epics
although on all of this, when you think about the nature of random and your real chance of getting anything, DKP really does make sense, or at least flattens the luck out a good deal
It'd be nice, but you don't pug to make friends.
warriors shouldn't roll on hunter's main weapons and hunters shouldn't roll on warrior's main weapons
i have never rolled on a weapon that wasn't for my main class and was preferential to another because I am a decent person and like to get reinvited to groups. similarly i never "ninja" ore/herb spawns, i usually try to roll if we both get there at the same time.
I rarely ever pug.
people are just assholes
edit: ultimately I think rolling on a gun when you're a warrior, when there is a hunter that needs it more than you, is on par to a fury/arms warrior rolling on a shield(when there was no dualclassing) when the tank needs it. this is or was frowned upon largely in most groups I'd been in
I knew a guild that decided to do DKP bids for every shard of the Legendary Mace....
I guess they didn't really want a healer to get that thing ever.
I don't know why you keep saying this like melee roll on ranged weapons for decoration. It's a stat stick, and is a dps increase. It's also entirely possible that a ranged weapon could be a bigger dps increase for him than it is for you, depending. What do you do then?
That's not similar. That's just weird. If you wanted to be courteous you'd just move on to the next node.
Stop raiding with purely self serving twits.
It's a little difficult to do this since people don't use resumes in WoW, as I said the person was usually booted for not listening, or given a firm warning, there just tends to be a lot of assholes, or I just am very unlucky, probably both
DRAKKISAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATH!!!!!!!
*Shakes fist*

I know our loot council doesn't allow items to be just 'given' to another member of the council (unless there is no competition), typically if it would go to the LC member over the next most viable person, they do a roll off between the two.
Also on occassion when people are equally deserving they will call for a roll off.
if you are rolling on an item that is a DPS/Tank/Heal increase for you, and you DPS/Tank/Heal for that run, then it makes sense.
