I figured somebody would know about these. I'm looking to get one for my father in law's birthday, but I don't really know anything about them.
What are good ones, what features do I want, and how much should I expect to spend?

You can usually get the frequencies online, so, unless you're not confident in your father-in-law's ability to hand-jam the frequencies, I'd recommend going with the cheap Uniden one.
