I'm going to a christmas party where we are doing a chinese christmas. The limit is $30 and I was hoping to buy a nice bottle of champagne. These women who are going to be there are not stuck up but they like to act like it, so I have to get something that will please everybody and my friend is already bringing Godiva.
I ran a google search, but I couldn't find anything on it--What the heck is a Chinese Christmas, and how does it differ from a... non Chinese one? :P Being Chinese myself, I have no clue what that means.
If you go to a liquor/wine store and ask the people there, they can usually suggest good or appropriate bottles for you. You're probably not in Ontario, but a product search like this http://www.lcbo.com/products/productsearch.shtml really comes in handy too.
You can find Veuve Clicquot in the $30 range, and it is quite good. I had it at my wedding and the bottles were drained in quick fashion. It doesn't have the harshness that cheaper champagnes usually have.
Chandon puts out some very good budget wine. Failing that, Korbel is a good workhorse champagne; nothing spectacular, but quite tasty.
Korbel isn't a real champagne. In Europe they'd have to label their bottles as sparkling white wine. Only sparkiling white wine made from grapes grown in the Champagne region of France can be genuinely classed as Champagne. It's a somewhat snobbish distinction, but if these girls are as sophisticated as they like to pretend they are then Korbel might not impress as much as the likes of Moet et Chandon or Veuve Clicquot.

Yes, yes, yes. My parents do a Champagne tasting (or two depending on how they're feeling) a year and the Veuve is almost always the favorite year in and year out. It's a wonderful champagne. Seriously, if you can find it I suggest you get it.

Hey, when you're allowed back on the forums later maybe you'll not ever do this again. That would be good.
