[OOC] Star Wars: Tales of the Old Republic (we have returned)
this is the OOC thread for Tales of the Old Republic!
When: The Old Republic (3700 BBY)
Where: HERE ON THESE BOARDS
Why: BECAUSE STAR WARS IS AWSUM
I'm using a campaign i've actually been running on the table for the past couple weeks (they're my guinea pigs you see). the basic premise is your standard Star Wars stuff, with a more personalized tone. the campaign's events after the first while are largely going to be dictated by what i am given as far as backgrounds on our two protagonists.
a couple caveats: this is going to be both a combat-heavy AND roleplay-heavy campaign. if you can't write good posts and come up with hooks, don't apply. if you can't make a competent character, don't apply. I also love the Force, so if you don't want to play a game where the Force is omnipresent (see i made a pun) then don't apply.
Update: WE HAS OUR TWO PLAYERS
--
The State of the Galaxy and the Jedi Order, Three Thousand and Seven-hundred Years Before the Battle of Yavin
It has been three hundred years since the purging of the Jedi Order at the hands of the deadly Sith Triumvirate. Thanks to the nameless heroine known as the Jedi Exile, the Jedi Order has once again been rebuilt, and after four generations the Jedi have finally begun to flourish once more.
Unlike the dogmatic Jedi Order just before the rise of the First Galactic Empire almost four thousand years later, today's Jedi Knights are diverse and multifaceted. While the Unifying Force is still the primary philosophy of the Jedi Order, many other philosophies on the Force are encountered within the ranks of the Jedi as apprentices from all walks of life, of all ages, are brought into the fold.
Just as the Jedi Order recovers what it lost and discovers new ground, so too does the Republic. The economy after the devastating Mandalorian and Sith Wars 300 years prior has steadily improved, and the borders of the Galactic Republic have expanded drastically as new star systems are discovered and brought under its banner, leading to an unprecedented golden age of peace and prosperity.
But we all know that the galaxy goes in cycles. After a rise, there is always a fall.
It is a time of frontiers and exploration. Heroes rise to reclaim old roads before forging ahead into the unknown while villains plot to destroy all they hold dear.
Yeah, I can see that being fun. I've been playing some d20 lately with an actual tabletop group so my utter distaste of the system is slowly lessening. Consider me tentatively interested, although I'd like to find out what period you're setting it in.
EDIT: Reading comprehension is failed. I do like the Old Republic, though. Interested.
probably unknown, maybe locally. characters will have been around the block once or twice i'd say, but still have much to learn, many more obstacles ahead, etc
Oh shit, I want in on this. Which book(s) do I need? Are they available for legitimate PDF purchase so I can be sure to get a copy before my chance to make a character runs away?
Fen Raan doesn't remember much of his home world, but he doesn't miss it. He was only there for the first few years of his life before he was tested and found gifted by the Jedi. "Force Sensitive" - alien words to him at first, but ones that were applied to him constantly by those older than him. But with those words came training, and learning, and more odd words that didn't make sense at first. Before he knew it, Fen Raan was an apprentice - a Padawan. But it was just another word to him - until he met his master, Mardos Colsan, and everything changed. Suddenly the world was alive with a spark of exuberance Fen Raan had never felt before, and those meaningless words became profound and important.
Then came the day that everything went terribly wrong.
The two were on a mission to investigate an orbiting outpost that had gone dark. When they arrived, they faced a fearsome enemy: a Sith. During the course of the battle, Master Colsan used the force to push Fen Raan out of the way of a saber strike. He was pushed out of the room, and the blast doors were sealed before he could do anything more; with his lightsaber stuck on the other side. But he could still hear the fight raging on through the intercom, forced to listen to his Master fighting for his life while unable to do a thing to help him. He listened as his Master was beaten, tortured, and then finally killed.
Before the dark Jedi could come after him, Fen Raan dashed back to the ship and took off.
He could never forgive himself for that though, and became deeply disturbed by it. He can no longer meditate or sleep for more than a few hours at a time without hearing the death throes of his former Master. He has devoted much of his time to tracking down who that dark jedi was, and where to find him; but so far to no avail.

Bam, pow.
Eri Esprith
24 year old Zeltron female
Jedi Knight
Eri was born and raised mostly on the luxurious homeworld of her people, Zeltros. Mostly; daughter to the Republic Senator of Zeltros, she made frequent trips from her homeworld to Coruscant that often left her depressed for the duration. Because of her frequent nearness to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, her Force Sensitivity was detected early in her life; because time on Coruscant caused her to grow weary and despondent, her father refused to allow her to be trained at the Jedi Temple, claiming that if it were Eri's destiny to become strong in the Force, then that strength would blossom on Zeltros, where she was happy and uplifted by her peers.
Her father wasn't entirely incorrect; Eri did become strong in the Force, her familiarity and control of it buoyed on the general contented happiness of Zeltros and the support of her friends (of which Eli had very, very many.) Eventually, Eri's life on Zeltros became destructive to her continued growth in the Force - the borderline hedonistic culture of the Zeltros world got to her, and the pull of the Force began to fall by the wayside.
In a particularly lucid period (on Coruscant, away from her friends), a seventeen year old Eri told her father she was going to stay back when her father returned to Zeltros, to meet with the Jedi; she explained that she knew the will of the Force, and that her behavior on Zeltros was numbing her to its ebbs and flows. At seventeen years old, Eri Esprith entered the Jedi Temple on Coruscant to undergo formal training.
Eri was taught under a cheerful instructor, who didn't mind terribly taking on an older apprentice. Her master, Karia Linth, was a believer in the less-popular view of the Force - the Living Force - and Eri found that this ideology helped her fall into the Jedi way more easily, as she was not forced to abandon her emotions entirely (although she did learn, necessarily, to ignore the negative impact that those around her could have on her state of mind.)
In the name of furthering her education and refining her focus, Eri's tutelage under Karia Linth was spent traveling the Galaxy, meeting foreign species and interacting with new cultures, both to open her mind to the ways of the world as well as to force her to construct the mental shield that is required for a Zeltron to interact with the world at large without losing their grip on the Force or the Jedi's philosophy.
This lasted for seven years; now twenty-four years old, Eri Esprith has cut away the braid marking her a padawan, and become a Jedi Knight in her own right, ready to serve the Jedi order or even take on a padawan of her own.
posted some stuff in the OP so you guys don't feel so blind when coming up with concepts. this time period is pretty much undefined as far as canon goes (the trailer for SW:TOR notwithstanding ahem)
Ah, I thought maybe knowing certain rules would help define what my limitations are concerning character concept, but I'm gathering now that the main concern is actually just coming up with a concept that fits the setting.
Ask a street urchin on Coruscant where Tanrus Yarn came from, and that urchin will probably tell you "a great ball of fire" before running off to find less intense conversation.
Tanrus was never the smartest thug of the planet's underbelly. But he was fierce. He had a look in his eyes that would convince anyone to do as he says, lest they die painfully.
Finally apprehended after a heist gone awry, Tanrus caught the Jedi Council's attention. Not an especially strong fellow, his presence was finally attributed to a connection with the Force. Hoping to channel Tanrus' connection for the Council, as opposed to granting the Dark Side another ally, which seemed inevitable given Tanrus' violent trajectory, he was taken as a padawan under the training of Lauren Dar.
Lauren was a strict teacher who adhered to tight emotional constraint. He had no patience for Tanrus' outburts and trained Tanrus with the expectation that self control is key, first and foremost, in all things under unity of the Force.
Tanrus was allowed to join the ranks of the knights after his training, though a wary eye is often cast on him. He has taken Lauren's training to heart, but the soul of violence still resides in him. Every task, for Tanrus, is a confrontation with his own darker side. His life an eternal, and internal, battle against rage that will either harden him or burn him out.
Well look who came up with a concept(paired with Jacques who should be puttin' in his own thing soon)
Visi Droan
18 year old Miralukan
Smuggler/Pilot
As a very young child, Visi would often point up to the sky and say 'I want to go there!' Luckily for her, she got her wish. Chosen as one of the many Force-Sensitive Miralukans to become a Jedi, her proud parents watched her step onto the Jedi ship with her brown-robed teacher-to-be.
At the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, her constant desire to be going somewhere else ended up interfering with her training, and after a few years of hopelessly trying to get the young girl to immerse herself in the ways of the Jedi, her tutor, the kind Jedi Master Colsan, let her go, returning her to her homeworld as yet another Miralukan who didn't quite make it as a Jedi.
Young Visi, however, didn't want to go back to a place she'd already been. Sneaking off of the ship mere moments before it took off, the Miralukan ended up in the deep Undercity. Her sensitivity to the Force kept her out of any major trouble, but eventually she found herself cornered by a swoop gang, who wanted to tease the poor blind girl. Taking a last desperate chance, she climbed onto a decrepit speeder that some drunk had left behind, and found herself flying with a skill she didn't know she had. After a few hours of chases through the streets of Coruscant, Visi was laughing delightedly, and the FragJets took her in as an honorary member.
Illegal swoop races were a big way to earn money, and Visi was one of the best pilots. Her opponents underestimated her at first, being that she was blind, but her force talents let her get a long way.
Paired with a Feeorin mechanic, Bil(yet another member of the FragJets,) she tore up the circuits and the races, winning thousands of credits for the Jets.
Unfortunately, the Jets weren't willing to part with such a large sum of money, and they slowly started lowering the share they gave Visi. She seemed to enjoy racing for the sake of racing, after all.
So one night, looking up at the buildings that formed her sky, Visi pointed up at space, and turned to Bil. "I want to go there. Why do they get to keep all the money we win? Coruscant sucks."
It only took them a few days to come up with their plan to get out of the gang. After the next big race, Bil would rig their swoops to fail while Visi got the credits they had won out of the FragJet's safe. Then they'd hit up a disreputable starship merchant, get a ship, and get off the planet.
The plan, of course, worked without a hitch. Bil's mechanical aptitude shut down the swoops, and Visi cracked the safe before they even noticed. A few hours, a new starship, and a bit of paperwork later, they were on their way to the stars. Not being quite able to pay off the their old ship, the kindly trader pointed them towards Manaan, giving them a contact name. "He can hook you up with some good honest work, and you two look like you need this piece of junk more than I need it cluttering up my yard. Haw!"
A few days later, on the watery planet of Manaan, the two found themselves talking with an old Selkath, who was upset with the Republic rationing Kolto across the galaxy. "Free trade, man! That's how it's done! So, I've got a deal for you two." Visi could pilot, really, really well. Not to mention her knack of getting out of trouble with the authorities. And if trouble did happen? Well, that's what Bil was there for, not to mention keeping their crappy starship running. So the pair took up life as Kolto smugglers, running the medical material to planets that didn't get enough in the Republic ration. Quickly paying off their debt to the old star trader, the pair kept going. It was good work, paid the bills, and helped people for real! Then, one night as they were setting course back to Manaan, Visi turned to Bil.
"You ever wonder what's past the edge of the galaxy? We should find out. Not that we could make it in this heap of crap. I think we need a new ship."
And now the pair is working towards getting a new ship to take beyond the Outer Rim, smuggling Kolto to all parts of the known galaxy.
Bil's childhood had been spent running. Born to an alternatively neglectful and abusive father, he grew up fast and tough, leaving home as soon as he was able and hitting the hard streets of Coruscant's underground. He hates thinking about the old bastard, but also doesn't know where he'd be without the Feeorin's hard lessons and hand-me-down knowledge on how to keep pieces of junk together until you could sell them.
Both of these skills came in handy when Bil fell in with an up-and-coming swoop gang, the FragJets. Hired as extra muscle but kept on for his skills with a hydrospanner, Bil was making a decent living with them until Visi showed up. Although the FragJets were initially impressed with her skills, they eventually made her a black space-sheep as her piloting skills started outshining those of the gang's higher-ups. And Bil, her favored mechanic had a pall light cast on him by association.
So when they both started hurting for creds and had grown tired of being taken advantage of, Bil sabotaged some swoops and they took to the sky, flying on stolen creds. Since then, Bil has been trying to keep their deathtrap together even as they pay it off and move on towards bigger and better things.

OK, I'm sure mine needs/will get a little bit of revising, but I have to go to work and I am happy enough with this that I can turn it in before the deadline.
Ssussek
17 Year Old Trandoshan Male
Jedi Padawan
As a child, Ssussek looked to be the most promising hunter in his litter. He showed great feriocity and ruthlessness in his training hunts on Dosha. Several times he went so far as to kill -- and in one case devour -- his own littermates when they showed signs of weakness in the hunt. His elders noticed early on that he seemed to be able to sense the presence and location of other lifeforms, and that he had skill with a sword and reflexes faster than some of the most experienced hunters that the elders had ever seen.
But the Scorekeeper did not grant him good fortune during his coming of age ceremony on his twelfth birthday, which culminated in a Wookiee hunt on the neighboring planet of Kashyyyk. It just so happened that the Wookiee Ssussek was hunting was an agent in league with several Jedi who were on Kashyyk gathering information about the Sith presence on Dosha, and the Trandoshans involvement with the Sith.
The Jedi formed a plan and captured Ssussek, effectively zeroing his Jagganath and forfeiting his life.
The Wookiee suggested that Ssussek be returned to Dosha in captivity where he would be disgraced and most likely put to death, but the Jedi sensed that the force was strong with Ssussek. They decided that due to his innate strength in the force and his questionable morality, Ssussek must be kept out of the hands of the Sith.
So it came that Ssussek was taken to the nearby Jedi enclave first as a captive, then later as a student. The Jedi taught him the importance of life, and convinced him that with their help he could become a Jedi helping to rid the galaxy of the Sith presence. He reasoned that in doing battle with the Sith, he could hope to regain some of his lost Jagganath points and get back into good standing with the Scorekeeper. It was at this point that he began his formal training in the force.
Now Ssussek is 17, an adult by Trandoshan standards, and has earned the rank of Padawan Learner among the Jedi order. He still struggles with his distrust of Wookiees, as well as a resentment of those he perceives to be weak (although he recognizes that those with weak bodies are not always of weak minds.) While he has control of most of his emotions he still frequently struggles with his anger, something that both dissatisfies himself and worries his masters.
Only time will tell if he can gain control of all his emotions and become a true Jedi Knight.

Is that not classic enough for you!
Edit: Not nearly enough Jedi-ing.
Edit the second: What kind of power level we thinking for the chars? Unknown? Locally known? Galactically known?
What would the Jedi do with a wild force user they found late in life? Not wild-violent, but wild-untrained.
or
'you must be taken to the temple for training'
depending on the location
it's basically your call.
I have processes that must be thought.
TO THE PROCESSMOBILE.
Also, I'll probably sleep on this and post something in the morning.

Well I already decided to not be a Jedi, unlike everyone else. So I guess I'm double-cheating!
Oh you did not just go there. It's on!
