360 headsets, voice, and choppiness woes

The two headsets I have with my 360 are the newish ones with the single port plug and the volume/mute on the wire. Unfortunately, they are complete shit.
- I need to almost swallow the microphone for it to pick up my voice at a normal speaking volume
- Every now and then it doesn't seem to be connected properly because I see the icons pop up like someone is talking but I can't hear anything. While I was playing NHL09 I could hear people talking from my TV, but the headset would only output voices every now and then.. and choppy.
- It seems if I wiggle the connector it goes in and out.. but it's hard to confirm.
Is this a problem with this particular headset? Could it be my controller instead?* Should I buy a separate headset?
*My controllers sometimes blink like the batteries are running out, but they are fully charged. I'm using Panasonic NmH rechargeables that I've had for a few years.
it's the "new" headsets. i haven't heard or read a single positive thing about them. i've even been told this by guys at two different gamestops as well. i've gone through 3 and they were all shit. 2 i returned and one the volume wheel just decided to buck the establishment and just spin freely in both directions, not influencing the volume a hair. i've still got one of the old ones and i've been trying to find a reasonable deal on craigslist for another one.

Is there a good wireless one you'd recommend? Can I use pretty much any headset that will fit in that port?
Had I known how utterly shitty the newer design headsets were I would've been a lot more pissed at my cat back when it chewed through the cord of my old pair.
Its mostlikely the controller port where the microphones plug into. My port F*ked up within a few weeks after pluging in and out the microphone so I went and bought a wireless mic. It costs 60 bucks but its well worth it. Havnt had a single issue since and the quality is so much better. You just have to remember to plug it in to recharge every now and then or when you aint using it.
