OoE is probably the strongest of the three DS titles. Great soundtrack, there isn't a clutter of items at all (maybe the accessories, but barely). If there's a weakpoint, it would have to be Shanoa's personality..
The plot of OoE involves Shanoa being dead on the inside. An accident with an evil ... jar thing ... ends up stealing her emotions ten minutes into the game.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike and the Castlevania games fo sho
days of ruin is significantly better than dual strike
That last level was a bitch, though. I couldn't complete it without using an online guide. You have two towers that fire mortars at you inflicting half-damage to your units, you have 5 laser beams firing wildly, the enemy starts off with five Mega tanks, and the Hero unit heals his units each turn ... and he's usually a jet fighter. You cannot win that fight fairly.
Both advance wars games, especially Days of Ruin, particularly if you didn't play the GBA advance wars games.
Dual strike is still a solid game, DoR is just better.
I'll second this, but with a warning that once you play Days of Ruin, you can never go back to the old CO power system, which I would loosely describe as the blue shell of turn-based strategy games.
I've heard nothing but good things about Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros. I've been waiting for a drop to $30, but I guess that was me being naive.
If you're planning to pick up first-party Nintendo titles, pick them up new if you can find them. Since it's June, now's a good time to stock up Club Nintendo PIN numbers for next year.
Also, get a DSi if you don't have one. There is a lot to love in it. You wouldn't think a camera, some nifty sound software, and an online store add much, but it does!
Too bad it's region-locked.
Except it isn't. Only the DSiWare shop is, and god forbid japan gets a couple puzzle games before we do.
I guess another drawback to the DSi is OMFG NO GBA SLOT but it helps if you don't have any GBA games. Like me.
Take that Nintendo.

My GBA slot gets about equal time on my DS. Riviera is getting played at the moment, in anticipation of my copy of Knights in the Knightmare (coming in the mail any fucking day now). Fire Emblem, Tactics Ogre, Astroboy, Metroid Zero Mission, Rebelstar Tactics, Metal Slug and a lot of others get rotated through the slot as well. One of my favorite things about the DS is that I can carry two games in it. I was disappointed that the DSi doesn't have it. I love my GBA collection, and I like not having to carry a GBA and a DS when I travel.

The DS wasn't the perfect GBA replacement anyway. No multiplayer (except single-cart multiplayer such as in Advance Wars) and no support of Game Boy and GBC games. There were other uses for the slot as well, but not any truly awesome ones.
Except that Taito paddle. Damn you Square Enix, keeping all the good stuff locked away in Japan.

I use a micro. The thing is so small and sleek.
I don't use the word 'sexy' to describe electronics, but the Micro is sexy.
"Go spend $60+ on a second device!" is not a legitimate response to the DSi's lack of GBA slot. That being said: if you like GBA games, and you can afford it, get a Micro.

Not to mention you can find used ones for $30 pretty easily.

LOL! How? They changed everything I liked about the series in that one. The music sucks, the characters are unlikeable, their designs are ugly, the whole game is brown and depressing. It's like they took a bright, fun Nintendo game and tried to bring it up to date to compete with the more adult knockoffs like Field Commander. I also like how they gimped infantry so basically all you have to do is save up and spam the high level tanks.
Not sure what to suggest, but I do agree with you about keeping boxes and manuals. One of the things I loved about the DS when it was first released was that the cases are less... destructible, so it's significantly easier to find things with cases.

I just bought a DS, and a primary focus of mine is getting a bunch of GBA games I missed out on.
What angers me is that it's hard to find them used with a manual, let alone a box.
What kind of savage beast tosses the box and manual? o_O
(Any recommendations on where to find used gba games, other than eBay?)
Goozex seems to be always popping up as a way for people to get games. I can't bear to let go of my stuff, so I don't know the ins and outs of the service, personally.
Gamefaqs is great if you are missing a manual, just stay the hell away from the forums.
I don't want to put up a huge laundry list, so I just want to push Professor Layton more. I VERY rarely play games through completion, especially portables where you might pick up a few games here and there on trips and put the old ones on the backburner. Layton was the exact opposite - I played it every single night. It is probably the best game I've played on the DS.
If you're looking for a less storybased game - Space Invaders is really good too.

Days of Ruin is the best turn-based strategy game since Black Hole Rising, perhaps even better. There are numerous things making it better than AWDS:
The new CO system is the best thing to happen to the series since the original Advance Wars. The previous one was more of a reactionary system, in which players were rewarded for having their units take damage. The new system actually rewards good players instead of becoming the rubberband AI-equivalent of turn-based strategy games.
The new units in the Days of Ruin are much better than the new ones in Dual Strike. And I dig the new style, which makes the game look like a graphic novel. The redisigned battleship and carrier make sea battle go much faster, reducing the "turtling effect" that went into previous naval battles. And just spamming high-level tanks will get you killed by AT units.
You actually like Jake more than Will? Will's annoyingly high moral standards are irritating, but not nearly as much Jake, whose dialogue was probably written by a six-year-old asked to write what he thinks hipsters talk like.
You don't have to unlock multiplayer maps, so you can get into Wi-Fi without having to do the SP campaign. And the campaign is much better designed in Days of Ruin; not only more difficult but also no more bullshit "here's some artillery your opponent can't hit so all you have to do is follow your opponent around a gigantic circle" missions. The trial missions have some original ideas And the final mission is my new favorite mission in the series, beating some of my faves from Black Hole Rising.
And this is a nit-picking thing, but the HP meter in Days of Ruin actually lets you see whether your unit has 8.3 or 8.8 HP, since it's actually measured more accurately than the ten-point scale.
I think Starfy is one of my new favorite characters on DS. He reminds me of Kirby, but where Kirby is cute and unassuming, Starfy seems a little retarded but in a hilarious way.
I haven't had the chance to spend a ton of time with the game yet but so far it feels like a very solid platformer. Visually it's excellent as well, with vibrant colors and some really good animations, like when you do a spin attack too many times and Starfy gets dizzy.
Thanks for all the games listed guys, looks like I got lots of old stuff to get before i even think of newer stuff (except pokemon platinum... pokemon... yay)
I don't think Retro Game Challenge can be plugged enough. If you like old games at all, you will absolutely love this game. (Pity there's little-to-no-chance of the sequel making it out here.) But it's very much worth a purchase, and better than a lot of the better known games on the system.
Also, if you like turn-based strategy, give Civilization Revolution a shot. Great for when you want to conquer the world one ten-minute bathroom break at a time.
That one copy of Retro Game Challenge is still sitting on the bottom shelf of my local Gamestop for $30. I almost bought it yesterday but I already had Hatsworth and GTA picked out. I think I'll wait until it is super cheap.

One of these days I'm gonna find that paddle online somewhere along with the rumble pak that is designed to fit flush with the DS Lite.
All I have is the big chunky one that came with Metroid Pinball.

Ugh, I really want Starfy (And with Toys R Us' sale I'm tempted to get it along with Personal Trainer walking so I can get Stafy for 1/2 off) but I've got such a backlog.....
I just picked up a DS when the DSi came out the other month, so I only have Dragon Quest 5, GTA: CW, and Pokemon Platinum, but they're all worth a play (especially DQV). Also, I hope this doesn't come off as hijacking, but I'm trying to decide between Etrian Odyssey 2, Devil Survivor, and Knights in the Nightmare if anyone has played them enough to give an opinion (specifically concerning how much content/how good the story is) >_>
Heh, I was playing GTA Chinatown Wars today. I met a hooker named Cherri and she started ranting about how the thugs in the past GTA games always roughed up the prostitutes for money. Well no more! Working girls take a stand!
She and the rest of the Liberty City hookers suddenly appeared and chased me away with their pistols.
