I am making this thread to simply allow people to share and spread the word on their favorite mods that may or may not be well known. Penny Arcade seems to be a rally point for gamers, and in the scattered, isolated world of game mods there needs to be some thread to pull them together. Discuss any mod you like, post pictures, engage in constructive debates, or whatever else floats your boat.
I will just start by saying that "The Nameless Mod" is quite possibly the most epic mod I have ever seen. Seven years is a long time to make a game, you know. Check it out at <http://www.thenamelessmod.com/>
Beyond the Red Line, BSG mod for Freespace 2. Had a thread on the forums back when it was released.
And back in its heyday Natural Selection was my most favorite mod for Half Life. Can't wait for 2 to come around.

Probably the best mod I've played for a game (and I haven't played many mind you) was The Specialists. We used to game on for that shit a lot a few years back. I don't know what happened to the mod though in terms of development.
I'm throwing The Hidden for source in to this list. Haven't played it in ages, so i have no idea what it's like now. But this game was the bee knees when i played it on lan years ago. Always got a few people jumping :^:
^Oh yes, I played Hidden: Source recently. It's quite an amazing multiplayer mod and with such a cool premise. There's usually at least one game going on, too.l

I played a really good mod of C&C Renegade, its was a Red Alert Mod. More than just a reskin though, there was actually new vehicles and balanced existing ones. Only had 1 good night to play it with 10 other people, but it was pretty awesome.
The best single-player mod campaign for Starcraft would be the "Legacy of the Confederation" series. It was started even before Brood War was announced, and as time passed each release got more and more impressive.
The first episode Past Purposes takes place several centuries before the events of Starcraft, and while it features full voice acting and top-notch scripting and map design, it pales in comparison to episode two, Dawn of Darkness, which ushered in new graphics, new units, FMVs, and a continuity all its own, taking place instead of the events of Brood War. There's also the mini-campaign Fallen Angel, which is tough as all hell but also (at least) equal to Blizzard's campaigns in every way. The play order of the missions are a little odd, due to how they were developed - after viewing the FMV for Dawn of Darkness, you should play Fallen Angel before playing the rest of DoD, due to the fact that the end of DoD was delayed for a long time and FA came out in-between that time.
If you have Starcraft, you owe it to yourself to play these.
Battlefield Pirates and Movie Battles II. Awesome.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.
I always thought Forgotten hope for bf1942 was a great mod, added in a bunch of maps, completely changed the campaign, added in new weapons, tanks, vehicles and classes and refitted old stuff with more accurate skins and sounds
It was pretty awesome flying a plane over Crete and having about a dozen paratroopers drop out
High fantasy, magic, dwarves, elves, vampires, orcs, armegeddon, angels, demons, and much much more! It is a total conversion mod with new units, music, civics, techs, etc. If you've ever even played any of the Civ games you owe it to yourself to grab Civ4+BtS and snag this mod.
Freelancer's had some rather interesting stuff developed for it: Discovery, Freeworlds, the Star Wars mod - me, I was a Freeworlds man, I think - but a new one I found a little while ago that looks absolutly ace is Itano Circus
Or making the hordes of infected sound like everybody's favorite over-the-top macho wrestling superstar.
BONESAW IS READY! Though truth be told the Pee-Wee Herman infected mod sounds like it could be fun
The Space Empires games (at least 4 and 5, anyway) are awesome when it comes to modding since the data files're just text ones, and folks've developed some really interesting mods doing all sorts of unconventional things - making carries the only ones capable of entering warp points, more realistic armor behavior, massive stellar-scale ships and planetary constructs. Good times.
EDIT: My memories of Forgotten Hope basically consist of joining a naval battle game (England vs. Germany, I think) jumping into the front gun and lining up some probing shots against the krauts - and blowing myself up and sinking the ship because someone put a flagpole in front of the fucking forward gun.
I got out of my BF1942 mood shortly thereafter and haven't touched it since.
I'm pretty sure Natural Selection qualifies as most radical modification to the game engine. Who could have imagined that the Half Life engine would support RTS style gameplay?
Air Buccaneers was so much fun, but its biggest downfall was that it required teamwork and that almost never happens right on the internet. My best memory of that game was when my friend and I gave a narrated adventure park style ride to a bunch of people on our balloon who wouldn't stop cussing at us as I drove us right above the water and through a lagoon. We then crashed into an island and told them not to worry as it was all apart of the ride.

Oh wow. Now I need to go and find my Freelancer disk.

that mod seemed like it was so cool, but I never once got into a game where I had any real idea of what I was doing with a team that did either. Basically it was just people running around.
Battlefield Pirates and Movie Battles II. Awesome.
Absolutely agree on MBII. I haven't tried Battlefield Pirates but if it's getting a recommendation from a fellow MBIIer then I think I need to fix that ASAP.
I was a bit sceptical when i first played it as it is based around the Planet Deus Ex forums and its denizens, but after a few mintues found that its was as close to classic Deus Ex as possible. A huge new game world and fully voice acted; a lot of which is actually better than the original VA.
CSS: Scifi mod for Half-Life 2 is awesome. I was playing through the entire storyline again with that mod just being a badass. For the most fun you want to put in the codes for unlimited energy (slomo) and power up your kick move. Makes the game completely ridiculous and so much fun.
Has anyone tried Battlefield Pirates mod for BF2? I loved the original, but they took so long releasing 2 I think the community has probably died off (there never really was much of one in the original, but I could usually find a server to play on).
Half-Life had some fantastic mods, DURRR. Counterstrike and DoD were both quite fun and merited the retail treatment. Natural Selection, of course, is not just better than all mods but better than most games ever made. The Specialists is fantastic. Bumper Cars was fun. BrainBread was a wonderful zombie shooter. Holy Wars was hilarious fun deathmatch. Move In! was an interesting tactical shooter with wonderful graphics. Science and Industry tops Team Fortress 2 in terms of hilarity and it was ridiculously inventive to match. And those are just off the top of my head.
Starsiege: Tribes was just as much Shifter and Renegades to me as it was Base.
Battlefield 2 got much, much bigger with Point of Existence 2, got FANTASTIC and AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL with Forgotten Hope 2, got piratey with BF Pirates 2 although not enough people played that, got extremely realistic and quite awesome with Project Reality 2, and got futuristic with 2142. Oh, right, that last one wasn't technically a mod
HL2's sweet offerings consist of a ton of great single player maps (HL had these too, like Poke646 and Pieces of Us and stuff) like Mistake of Pythagoras, but in terms of multiplayer I really like Insurgency, which is much better as of late, Age of Chivalry and PVK II, both of which rock, Ballmen, DIPRIP, and Empires, which are good for a bit of fun, Eternal Silence, which got WAY better, and Resistance and Liberation, which has much potential.
And don't even get me started on all sorts of things like the Mechwarrior 4 Mercs Mech Pak or the V:TM - B patches or how Oblivion is an entirely different game with mods or the STALKER overhauls and so on. Mods are what make the PC so fantastic. That and mice and keyboards.
They Hunger was an awesome set of zombie episode maps for HL1
Obviously TFC
Black Mesa Source is looking pretty pimp at the moment
Counter Strike (started as a mod!)
Day of Defeat (same!)
And the Freespace mod scene for keeping it alive
I was just thinking today how awesome a mod for the Source engine based around destroying the other team's building would be. Be it with siege weaponry or a more modern type with explosives. Utilizing the physics engine of course.
These guys are doing some cool stuff with that engine! Who would've thought you could turn tanks into Mechs and Walkers and have the AI handle the targeting just fine without any rewrites? Pro.

But sometimes the good things in life aren't all in big mega-conversion mods. Sometimes it's the little things that count. Like turning a hulking apeish monstrosity into Johnny fucking Bravo.

So. Right.

You beat me to it! TRPG was/is ridiculously fun. The only real problem is that you get TOO powerful.

Thread also needs more Someplace Else (HL) and Minerva (HL2), both from the latest (as far as I know) Valve recruit from the mod community.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
BF1942 modding was so fun.

Both are coming along nicely, but as with all mods, you can't count on anything until it's released. Both videos are obviously WIP stuff.
