I recorded a video playthrough (see my sig) just to get more people to try Heart of Evil for Half-Life 1. It's a single player adventure which is basically Apocalypse Now
with zombies and aliens
It was made by a pretty tiny team, and it shows, but it's got lots of atmosphere, humor, and batshit insanity towards the end.
Astayonix enjoyed the videos, so she can vouch for it.

You beat me to it! TRPG was/is ridiculously fun. The only real problem is that you get TOO powerful.
:O
ME TOO
fightin' goblin runts, training up my crossbow skill
building a little fortress on steef's TVT server, which was a mod of a mod
getting my hopes up for Ironsphere when tribes 2 came out, only to be disappointed
good times
Did you ever play on Y0SHiB0Y's server? His mod of TRPG was amazing.
i fucking loved trpg to death, i played the mod that fleshed out the magic to like 6 different categories, probably one of my most beloved games
I have been thinking of modding some TRPG to make it more user friendly and hosting a server. Basically use friendly meaning being able to bind spells easily to keys, it would be command based like "#action 1 #cast fireball" Then when you press 1 it would say "#cast fireball". However that massive chat menu to cast spells like v.v.b for beam of v.v.f for firebomb did work out nicely, its just that it made it hard while moving around. I made a farming mod of it a long time ago were you would get your own farming plot and could grow plants. That was interesting.
I've been pleasantly surprised with a few of the mods that are in development for UT3. Namely AFF Planetstorm, The Ball, and CODA.
I'm also really looking forward to the Source version of NeoTokyo as I used to play the UT2k4 version a lot.
Wow that game looks like Ghost in the Shell. You really shouldn't be able to see through smoke with thermals though.
Why not? We have thermal scopes at work that see through smoke so I don't see why thermals wouldn't do the same here.
Also, I'm really excited about NeoTokyo, it's nearly out and it reminds me a lot of Dystopia.
Really? I find that hard to believe. Every single set of thermals that I've used has been unable to see through smoke or dust clouds. Any smoke thick enough that would function as concealment would not be penetrated by thermals. Next you'll tell me you have used thermals that can see through glass.

I've fired weapons through smoke with the thermal scopes at work, it was like the smoke didn't even exist. Why would I lie about that?

Ok assuming you're talking about the military which set of thermals you're talking about? PAS13's? a DVE? The screen on an RWS/CROW system? The new NODs (I can't remember the nomenclature)? A CLU? The only difference in most thermals is that the newer they are the higher the resolution of the imag, but they still cannot see through thick smoke (the kind used in smoke grenades) because, like light, the heat signature of a target can't be detected through the smoke. If you do have something that can defy the laws of physics I must assume that you're in the Air Force.

I'm not military and I don't know jack shit about what scopes we use other than that they're expensive (they said $10,000 each), I just know that I looked through the scope and could see the targets clearly and there was smoke between it and me. Could the fact we were using a smoke machine be why I could see through it since I doubt the shit it puts out and the stuff inside smoke grenades is the same?
Thermals in the military cost at a minimum of $10,000 (most cost much much more). Smoke in a smoke machine is nowhere near as dense as that in a dust cloud or smoke in a smoke grenade. If the smoke is thick enough to obscure your vision of what's behind it then you can't see through the smoke with thermals.

Dystopia is loads of fun, and has been consistently (if slowly) update for a long while now. Perhaps I should resurrect the thread? I think I still have the OP saved somewhere...
Anyone notice how some things (mattresses and the copy machines in Highrise) are totally impenetrable? A steel wall, yeah that makes sense, but bullets should obliterate copy machines.
I don't know about you, but I always buy a bullet proof printer. Its a lot more expensive, but I think the advantages are apparent.
The very existense of flame throwers proves that at sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves "I want to set those people over there on fire, but i'm just not close enough to get the job done."
I loved Halflife's The Opera. Sure, it wasn't as polished or content-heavy as the Specialists, and it was buggy as hell to boot, but there was one thing that made it all ok for me: style-based scoring. The game was the first (and I think only) where the score was tallied purely on how much style you had. Kill a dude with the cheapest, most powerful weapon (i.e. the shotgun)? 50 points. Kill a dude with akimbo pistols while backflipping through a window down 3 stories into the pool outside? 10,000 points.
I remember numerous occasions when a n00b would come in, kill me and everyone else over and over again with the shotgun—getting a ton of frags— then cry hax when he still sat at the bottom of the rankings because he had no style. Awesome.
Four pages in and no one has mentioned Star Wars: Dark Forces yet? For shame!
Seriously though, Dark Forces still has the craziest mods I've ever seen. The mods took what was a decent Doom-style corridor shooter and did some magical things with it. Exploding volcanos, a siege on a rebel base with rebel troops, breaking glass, fighting Darth Vader, Lucas-quality storylines.... damn. I need to play this again.
Jedi Knight also saw some fairly fantastic mods; Birth of a Mercenary is probably the best single player mod I've ever seen come out of a fan community. Unfortunately the Jedi Outcast and academy communities fell apart fairly quickly and are on life support.
I'm really tempted to track down my copy of Deus Ex and try that Nameless Mod. Probably better than the official sequel, at any rate.
And if we're going to open it up to professional mods, I've been indulging in the three Duke Nukem 3d mods and find them much more involving than the original game's missions.
Seriously, Duke gets a fucking coconut launcher in the Caribbean levels. Epic.

Whuuut? That sounds awesome I think I'm going to download it. Kind of sounds like action half-life, which was a great mod.
I used to play this quake 3 mod called urban terror. Man that was a lot of fun.
Urban Terror? Yeah it was kind of neat, never shook off the feeling that it was a lame CS ripoff though.
I miss URT, I still have a workshirt I bought at the Everlan that Oz showed up at to talk up their Urban Terror mod for Enemy Territory. Oh god, I've dated myself horribly.
Edit: Apparently it still exists as a standalone at urbanterror.net.
Yes that, though from reading a post made 3 days ago it seems they're having trouble finding any mappers. That's sad news, I hope they get everything straightened out.

The "Assassinate Darth Vader" DF mod was really well done. The level quality was quite professional. If any of you still have your copies lying around, I'd give it a whirl. He used every trick in the book to make a fast paced, easy to follow, engaging mission.

Its really sad for me to see Dystopia and NeoTokyo because they scream, "INCREDIBLE SINGLE PLAYER GAME" to me. As long as there was some good writing and a level designer who understands the word, "aesthetics."
Also, when you make a webpage for your mod, you should at least mention what fucking game its for!!

it wasnt quite a CS rippoff as both mods were based on the same original concept mod. UrT has really pulled away though as now it embraced the trick jumping comunity and added a ton of stuff for trick jumpers. I used to play that as my go to game, such good times. They are still updating and adding new maps, which is really cool.
I have to say my favorite mods hands down besides UrT are cinema for max payne 2, and smod for HL2. both add just so much to the games. And who can forget desert combat for BF1942? So awesome.

I can barely remember Jedi Knight's mods, but I remember the maps... Deep, Dralloc Hotel, DOTF SE were awesome. As for Jedi Academy, the smart people are playing Movie Battles. Finally, a mod that gives you manual control of blocking the lightsaber. Full Authentic mode that lets you take control of the characters in the films and fight out the battles, even the ones we didn't get to really see, like the assault on the Jedi Temple (you really have to play to see why the words "Pada rush" make me all giggly). Dozens upon dozens of maps where you can take control of any character you wish, from Jedi to Super Battle Droid, and customise them. Do you want to be a Jedi or Sith with full saber offense and defense, or do you want to instead funnel those precious points into Force Powers that might give you the edge in battle? As a Super Battle Droid, do you want to assign points to armour, giving higher resistance to blaster fire and lightsaber damage, or would you prefer to instead beef up your weapon, or even choose a different one?
It is freaking awesome.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.
With all the Star Wars talk, and Jedi Academy talk. I'm pissed at myself for getting rid of my old Star Wars Jedi Academy games.
Although Kyle Katarn was a wisecracking whiny bitch.

Mods!
Zombie Panic! Source is pretty fun. I crank a lot of time in that game on steam.
Curse is fun as well, :P.
Synergy: Half Life 2 co op. Meh.
A single player mod for Half Life 2 you say? Well, theres one named Ravenholm, sure its in french and dubbed in english, but its pretty damn fun with some interesting puzzles.
and Gmod.
Now. I don't get why people like Dystopia, I really never got into it. I found it to be a rather bland shooter with an interesting concept. But that doesn't stop me from playing it.

Hitbeeps. It is a scientific fact that hitbeeps are the most important advancement the human race has made in its short run on this planet, and their advent may, in fact, be the most important event to have occurred since the big bang. Don't argue with it. It's science. Now, Dystopia has hitbeeps out the wazoo. Scientifically speaking, that makes it fantabulous. Let me break it down for you: Do you know how many other games incorporate this blessing for the human experience? Don't answer that. I'll make a list for you:
Bionic Commando.
And Bionic Commando only has hitbeeps on headshots. How fun does that sound? The answer is very, but it's still desolate in comparison to Dystopia's robust hitbeeping engine so obviously it doesn't count (science!). Allow me to update the list for you:
?
I'm prepared to call that exclusive company. I guess people may also be drawn to... I dunno, refined teamplay or cyberspace or playstyle customization or whatever. A bunch of shit that's less important than hitbeeps.

All glory to the hitbeeps.

Hoo boy, the last time I used mods was back for Baldurs Gate II: Shadows of Amn and its expansion, Throne of Bhaal. I never got along with any of the fan-made NPC mods, but there were some really nice ones that either simply had utility purpose (DungeonBeGone, allowing you to skip Irenicus' dungeon at the start because after the first few times I'd rather swallow glass than go through it again), to gameplay/ending choices like Ascension, ToB enhancements, and of course Tactics. You can find most, if not all of them, over at Sorcerer's Place.
Bah, everyone knows the magnificence that is X-men: Ravages of Apocalypse, total conversion mod for Quake. You could stab people with adamantium claws in first person!
You can barely tell that it was done by three people in just as many months!

Dystopia was glorious in the beta due to the fact that you could play as a light, tag two bolts into the wall, and have your health drained enough to trigger your cortex bomb, time it right and rush into the defending spawn with stealth and watch...lol...watch the screen fill with kills. I still laugh at it now.
Oh, and killing someone with an emp grenade. That has to be the ultimate humiliation kill.

I wish there was more people playing the mod, on servers that were closer to where I live. It's hard when the only 3-4 servers with a decent number of people on them have pings of like 200+.
Just wanted to chime in here to say that a friend recently told me about Neotokyo, and I remembered reading about it here. After spending about 5 minutes on the main site, I purchased the music track. It's really good if you're into this sort of music (admittedly, I have no idea what genre it is).
I'm excited about the game too, but the music immediately grabbed my attention.

Really? I find that hard to believe. Every single set of thermals that I've used has been unable to see through smoke or dust clouds. Any smoke thick enough that would function as concealment would not be penetrated by thermals. Next you'll tell me you have used thermals that can see through glass.

Dystopia is loads of fun, and has been consistently (if slowly) update for a long while now. Perhaps I should resurrect the thread? I think I still have the OP saved somewhere...

Curse for Half-Life 2 Screenshots look bad ass.

I remember numerous occasions when a n00b would come in, kill me and everyone else over and over again with the shotgun—getting a ton of frags— then cry hax when he still sat at the bottom of the rankings because he had no style. Awesome.
Atlas
Timber Wolf
Cougar
Awesome
I'm super excited for this to come out, it's looking pretty sweet.
This is my new favorite thread. This decade fails for lack of Mechwarrior titles but this mod may redeem it.
I miss URT, I still have a workshirt I bought at the Everlan that Oz showed up at to talk up their Urban Terror mod for Enemy Territory. Oh god, I've dated myself horribly.
Edit: Apparently it still exists as a standalone at urbanterror.net.
This
The "Assassinate Darth Vader" DF mod was really well done. The level quality was quite professional. If any of you still have your copies lying around, I'd give it a whirl. He used every trick in the book to make a fast paced, easy to follow, engaging mission.

So awesome.
Sigh, depending on how that mod turns out, I may have to end up buying crysis.
Nothing's forgotten, nothing is ever forgotten
Although Kyle Katarn was a wisecracking whiny bitch.
>.<
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Is that why I still play Dystopia?
I knew it. Hitbeeps, they aren't just that. They are mind numbing, mind controlling, mind jumbling, mind stuff!
All glory to the hitbeeps.
You can barely tell that it was done by three people in just as many months!
http://www.zerogravity.com.au/portfolio0601.php
Dystopia was glorious in the beta due to the fact that you could play as a light, tag two bolts into the wall, and have your health drained enough to trigger your cortex bomb, time it right and rush into the defending spawn with stealth and watch...lol...watch the screen fill with kills. I still laugh at it now.
Oh, and killing someone with an emp grenade. That has to be the ultimate humiliation kill.

Heheh.
I remember hitbeeps from Quake 3: Arena. I know they're in Quake Wars: Enemy Territory as well. The Q3 ones sound like a flute chord and the QW:ET ones sound like someone playing pots and pans with spoons.
A goomba kill is only ultimate if the server has the Mario sound accompany the kill.
Trap kills were also fun.

Boop.
I wish there was more people playing the mod, on servers that were closer to where I live. It's hard when the only 3-4 servers with a decent number of people on them have pings of like 200+.
I'm excited about the game too, but the music immediately grabbed my attention.
