Yeah, Neotokyo's music is really good, I was considering buying the soundtrack myself. Of course, the game looks good too. Really gives me that Ghost in the Shell vibe, which is a good thing. I remember playing the UT2k4 mod a couple times, it was really fun so I expect this will be just as fun but a hell of a lot more polished.
I followed Neotokyo since its UT2K4 release. It's a great mod, but feels constrained by the fact it's going to be multiplayer-only. It seems the kind of game singleplayer could be simply amazing with, rather than just another multiplayer mod with a nifty setting.
It took the team this long just to make a multiplayer mod, it would haven taken even longer to make a singleplayer mod with the same amount of quality. I would figure it's too much work to do for free. Maybe if they get hired because of this they can make something amazing that's singleplayer but until then I'm more than happy with this.
Now. I don't get why people like Dystopia, I really never got into it. I found it to be a rather bland shooter with an interesting concept. But that doesn't stop me from playing it.
Hitbeeps. It is a scientific fact that hitbeeps are the most important advancement the human race has made in its short run on this planet, and their advent may, in fact, be the most important event to have occurred since the big bang. Don't argue with it. It's science. Now, Dystopia has hitbeeps out the wazoo. Scientifically speaking, that makes it fantabulous. Let me break it down for you. Do you know how many other games incorporate this blessing for the human experience? Don't answer that. I'll make a list for you:
Bionic Commando.
And Bionic Commando only has hitbeeps on headshots. How fun does that sound? The answer is very, but it's still desolate in comparison to Dystopia's robust hitbeeping engine so obviously it doesn't count (science!). Allow me to update the list for you:
?
I'm prepared to call that exclusive company. I guess people may also be drawn to... I dunno, refined teamplay or cyberspace or playstyle customization or whatever. A bunch of shit that's less important than hitbeeps.
Is that why I still play Dystopia?
I knew it. Hitbeeps, they aren't just that. They are mind numbing, mind controlling, mind jumbling, mind stuff!
All glory to the hitbeeps.
Boop.
All glory to the hitbeep... Boop.
I also never really looked at Neotokyo, back when I played ZPS a lot, they had an advert for it on the loading screens, but I never really went to the main site, toss a link?
I used to play this quake 3 mod called urban terror. Man that was a lot of fun.
Urban Terror? Yeah it was kind of neat, never shook off the feeling that it was a lame CS ripoff though.
I miss URT, I still have a workshirt I bought at the Everlan that Oz showed up at to talk up their Urban Terror mod for Enemy Territory. Oh god, I've dated myself horribly.
Edit: Apparently it still exists as a standalone at urbanterror.net.
I've been playing Urban Terror since version 2.3, took a hiatus somewhere in the 3.x versions (3.2, I want to say), and finally came back at 4.0. I only play team deathmatch (so I can jump in, kill some dudes for a few minutes, and leave) and it's a lot of fun.
And it's not a CS ripoff at all. I could never get into Counter Strike. Urban Terror is much faster thanks to game modes where you can respawn (hate waiting for the round to end in CS so I can play again,) but also bunny hopping, power sliding, and wall jumping. It's definitely a game about movement.
There's still a pretty big community, too. There are a lot of cheaters, but if you find a server with good admins, it's not a problem. I pretty much play exclusively on the SKV Clan TDM server, and it's rare to not see an admin online keeping an eye on people.
Yeah, I got that GitS vibe too; probably why I'm so interested. Wish I had heard about this when I was still playing UT2k4 :P
I tried it when it first came out back on UT2k4, it really wasn't that good at all.
They seem to have added some new features though, so I will give it another shot.

To be fair, the engine used in UT2k4 wasn't really designed with tactical gameplay in mind. Neotokyo seems to be much slower paced.

Uh, the engine makes no difference as far as tactical gameplay goes. Red Orchestra, for example, managed tactical gameplay just fine on UE2.5.

This is correct, if the team is any good it shouldn't matter what engine it is on really, as long as it is friendly to modding. Which UT2k4 seemed to be.
High fantasy, magic, dwarves, elves, vampires, orcs, armegeddon, angels, demons, and much much more! It is a total conversion mod with new units, music, civics, techs, etc. If you've ever even played any of the Civ games you owe it to yourself to grab Civ4+BtS and snag this mod.

I'm posting a [GAME ON] for this mofo the second it comes out. It looks pretty slick and the soundtrack, like you guys said, is sweet.

OH man air buccaneers. Me and my friends tried this a couple years ago and loved it. Just wish we could have gotten some bigger games going.

I installed this on Saturday around 11 am.
I didn't stop until 5 am Sunday.
I love this mod.
Woops, best of all it's coming out IN TWO DAYS!
I didn't realize it when I replied to this news in the Neotokyo thread yesterday, but turns out that's my birthday! Whoooo, happy birthday to me!
