So I had an earlier thread where we discussed 4x games that led to some fantastic gaming purchases for my new PC. Company of Heroes, in particular, I haven't been able to put down. Good times.
Edit: I just realized CoH isn't a 4x game. Yeah, we talked about RTSs as well. Whatever.
Now, however, I'm looking for something similar, but a bit different. After reading a Let's Play of King's Bounty and reminiscing about Master of Magic, I'm looking for a good modern fantasy turn-based strategy game that will capture my heart and/or wallet. RPG elements are a huge plus, and I'd prefer a game modern enough to have some pretty 3d graphics that will make my new machine purr. Since King's Bounty is the predecessor to Heroes of Might and Magic, I'm definitely giving some consideration to the most recent iteration of that series. Elemental looks very intriguing, but I'm too impatient to wait for that just yet. Has there been a solid offering in this genre in the last few years?
It certainly doesn't fit your shiny graphics bill, but Battle for Wesnoth is worth checking out nonetheless. It's free, it's turn-based, it's fantasy, it has lots of mods/user-created campaigns, and it's pretty much fantastic -- just ask anyone. Also, I can vouch for the new King's Bounty. I played the original to death and the new one pushes all the same buttons for me. Get it.
I technically own Disciples II on Steam but have not really played it. The reviews seemed good enough for me to buy at one point though!
I've played the hell out of the first Disciples and really enjoy it. Disciples II is on my "eventually buy from Steam" list, especially if it's any kind of improvement over the first one.
Geez... now I gotta reinstall another game. /me shuffles off to dig up Disciples disk.
The Heroes of Might and Magic series in general is a pretty good mix of roleplay and strategy. Its a turn based game in which you build armies at your castle and send them out into the lands with a hero. Heroes 2 and 3 were the best in the series.

I will vouch for Disciples II from here until the end of time. It is a fantastic game. Also, Disciples III is coming soon maybe. IGN says late September and everyone else seems to say TBA. I am cautiously optimistic.
Wow, I'm an idiot. I have a post on the first page of that thread.
I need this game immediately. I will sell non-vital organs to get it. OMG OMG OMG
It's currently $12.50 on GamersGate. I don't believe it has any DRM, but if that matters to you, I'm sure you can find out info about it. I'm a short way into it and it's excellent.
Also, I hadn't heard of Elemental - will definitely be keeping an eye on that.

Yes. A thousand times yes. Beautiful art. Fun gameplay. Many good times were had.
My one complaint is that I felt like the typical best answer to any given situation was: Step 1) Level the shit out of your hero and his boys, Step 2) Conquer. I would have enjoyed more it if the experience/monster distribution was such that it encouraged a few squads roaming the lands.

Hmm...I wonder if I can dig up those CDs...
I had about the same experience with Disciples II. Loved the game, beautiful art (especially the demons), but the strategy was a bit lacking. You have one super-powered squad murdering everything, and a few level one scrub groups wandering around hunting enemy rod planters.
The expansion compensates for this a bit by making the "boss" fight for the level so hard that you have to have several mid level groups to soften him up before sending in your main group.
Also, I'd like to bring up Dominions III. It doesn't meet your graphics requirement, but it has an unmatched depth of play. The price tag is pretty outrageous considering the lack of graphics, but I consider it a long term investment. Two or three months pass without me thinking about the game when suddenly the cravings set in and all of a sudden I'm up 'till 2am playing it night after night. It's the kind of game that never seems to get old.
I think I'm going to end up breaking down and buying HoMM5 no matter what. The graphics are just so damn pretty. Disciples II sounds great and I can't wait to get a hold of that as well. Dominions does look pretty interesting. I need to look into it.
Elven Legacy is quite good, and available on Steam and Gamersgate for convenience. It is essentially a hex-based wargame in a fantasy wrapper with units that accumulate experience and abilities from mission to mission in the campaign.
King's Bounty is better overall, I think, so if you haven't played that do so first.
Did the expansion for King's Bounty: The Legend ever come out stateside?
It only just came out in Russia back in April. Should be getting released elsewhere Q3 this year according to Wikipedia.

Do I understand it correctly that King's Bounty is basically HoMM with a greater focus on the singleplayer part? I was wondering about that for a while now.
So, a few questions on Civ IV, for those in the know.
First, I'm hearing that those that get the former "complete" version (the one without Colonization) have some trouble patching the game. That was the one I initially planned on getting since my interest in Colonization is fairly limited and the older version is cheaper. However, I don't want to do so if I won't be able to get the latest patch, since I know that it's necessary for many of the most popular mods (FoHII included). Anyone have any info on this?
Second, I keep seeing it mentioned that the newest "complete" version (the one with Colonization) is DRM-free. Is this really that big of a deal? Or was the DRM for the older versions of the game particularly bad?
I'm downloading that King's Bounty demo, looks cool given i've never heard of it before. How likely is it to run on my netbook?
Actually not very likely. There is something fucked up in the game code because it runs video cards very hot and seems to overheat notebooks especially. But if you can play the demo for more than an hour without crashing then you should be fine.

There is no multiplayer. All maps are static and the campaign is the same but some of the items and monster recruiting and level-up options are random. Most battles look the same but there are some special battles. Heavy focus on magic powers along with your unit stacks. It's very long, has some late game balance issues, and you will probably get sick of the mind-numbing attrition of restocking your stacks, but it's more than worth the 10 bucks if it sounds interesting at all. Just don't feel compelled to finish it if you get bored.

When it came out, I made fun of it because of its name and never actually thought to try it.
Now I have to say that it actually is pretty good thanks to you. I would also recommend it.
The previous game with an even more generic name, Fantasy Wars, is only 10 bucks from Gamersgate or Newegg. Like I said in another thread, I'd love to play it but after King's Bounty I think I'd shoot myself if I had to do more hex fantasy combat anytime soon.
Keep an eye out for Elemental from Stardock. I understand it's supposed to basically be Master of Magic.
It's scheduled to go into public beta this month.
Already? That is very good news indeed. WANT!
And I'll throw in a second on Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. It's the closest experience I've found to MOM. Lots of awesome units and abilities to try, great hero development options, item creation...good stuff all around. Plus it probably costs 5$ if you look around.

I just tried Shadow Magic recently. It's got this incredible charm to it that kept me coming back. The interface, however, can be quite difficult. You can't just click and select a unit, for instance.
And I was just going to post about Elemental: War of Magic. It's nice to see a few others looking forward to that. That may be one of my most anticipated games. I love the visual style, I love being able to buy and equip items on my hero, I love that you can build and maintain cities, and I love multiplayer campaign play! Om nom nom!

I heard good things about dominions 3 on another board. I was planning on downloading the demo tomorrow so I don't know anything about it right now. Maybe someone else can chime in on it.

First, you just need Beyond the Sword to have everything available for all the mods and whatnot. I'm not entirely certain what packs you're talking about though.
No, it's not a big deal. IIRC, all Civ4 ever had was a serial number and a disk check on boot... which, amusingly, they accidentally disabled for one of the patches before re-enabling it in a later one.

They really need to make a new one.
There's a new King's Bounty?!
:O
Edit: Wesnoth looks pretty cool, and free is hard to beat. I'll be sure to try that out.
Given that it is an exacting remake of King's Bounty with some new features.

You didn't know? I thought that's what you were referring to in the OP.
King's Bounty: The Legend.
It will pretty much fit the bill you're after. Try the demo, it'll give you a good idea of the game.

I remember hating that game, but then again, I was expecting a Heroes game and it really isn't one.
I also remember that I only rented that game, and when I did, there was a whole bunch of crud on the bottom of the disc :?
It's a remake of the game that was the precursor to Heroes. It is awesome and everyone loves it.
Yeah, it's King's Bounty through and through. I bought it expecting KB and that's what I got. :P

Dig them up. Fire them out of a cannon. Into my face.

Get Fall from Heaven II
That is all.
I'm not usually one to get completely lost in games, but the month of February pretty much disappeared thanks to that mod.
Nice. I'm actually hoping to get Civ IV Complete this weekend.
Edit: Just spent a bit reading up on it...WOW. It looks amazing.
King's Bounty is better overall, I think, so if you haven't played that do so first.
