It's a shame you're the only person who feels that way. Otherwise the half-dozen people I know who own Wiis would have picked it up. You know, instead of Wii Bowling.
The people you know who own Wiis don't sound like they've bought any games. There's no game called Wii Bowling and Wii Sports comes with the system.
Also I don't see any correlation between a game being the best experience in the last decade (my opinion as well) and whether a couple of people might have bought it.
Also, wasn't Super Mario Galaxy at one point the all-time highest rated game on gamerankings.com, or something like that?
I heard it was very well received. But that was about it.
As for 'Wii Bowling'...apparently, I'm thinking of Wii Sports, which apparently came bundled with the Wii?
Mostly, I see everyone playing Mario Kart, which I know for a fact didn't come bundled with the Wii. I need to check this out, it does seem kind of odd I know five people with Wiis and only one person who owns it (and doesn't have the game any longer).

After checking Metacritic, it would appear to be tied with Bioshock (which, to my knowledge, was pretty popular as well).
As I expected, it is not as prevalent as Mario Kart Wii. That would answer some questions. MKW's multiplayer might also give it an edge (people around here don't really play the Wii unless they have three other people with remotes to join them--which is odd, given that VC is there and all).

By the end of this generation, every game in that top 10 will have the words Wii or Mario in it. Wii Sports Resort, Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Wii...
The hardest part is probably going to be pushing Mario Party 8 over 8.1mil to get Halo 3 out of the top 10. I'm not saying I wish for this to happen, but it wouldn't surprise me. Oh, isn't there a WiiFit+? Perhaps that will just push Halo 3 out instead of Mario Party..
This helps make up for the general lackluster game that was Super Mario Sunshine. After a great game like Mario 64, that was kind of let down. At least for me. Which is not to say it was a bad game, just not that good either.
Wii Fit + is indeed coming this fall, and Nintendo is apparently bargain-pricing it (well, the game itself, not the game/board combo) out of the gate to encourage people to buy it again. It's like $21 in Japan, not sure what it'll be here. Smart move.
Call me cynical, but I don't think SMG2 is going to do as well as its predecessor. I think Synthesis is onto something with his personal experience. As you can see in the sales numbers, many more people bought and played Wii Sports/Play/Fit and Mario Kart. My guess is because they were far more accessible than SMG. My girlfriend bought SMG, expecting I guess something like Super Mario Bros, but found she couldn't get past the first world. While it's a great game, it's still a pretty difficult one to folks who aren't used to moving around in 3D, going upside down, manipulating the camera, etc. For example, I was playing through one of the later levels, and kept dying over and over again (damn mole boss). She was surprised that I kept on playing ... she would have long since stopped.
Interestingly, you can see that these type of traditional/hardcore game experiences max out under 10 million sales ... but a much more casual experience, done well, goes way beyond. It'll be interesting to see where Wii Sports Resort comes in. Are folks hungry for more Wii mini-games and such? Or are they just fine with what they've got?
Anecdotally, it's actually my more "gamer" friends that are looking forwards to Wii Sports Resort, thanks to Motion+. Folks that are more casual don't seem that excited about it, or even know that it's coming out. (Although we'll see if that changes come holiday gift-giving time!)
Apple (AAPL) recently celebrated the iPhone App Store's first birthday.
And what a year it has been: In that span, Apple became not only the hottest mobile platform in the world -- which around 15,000 developers have made software for, and all of its major rivals have tried to replicate -- but arguably the hottest gaming platform in the world. No other platform has had such a rush of developer and consumer interest in the last year.
Games represent the largest category in the app store -- 10,000 titles, 18% of all titles -- and also include some of the most technically innovative and financially successful titles.
Apple's platform has attracted heavyweight gaming shops such as Electronic Arts (ERTS), Gameloft, and Sega. And it has allowed important new studios to blossom from scratch, such as Ngmoco, whose Rolando franchise -- including the new Rolando 2 -- may still be the best example of iPhone-unique gameplay, via the phone's multi-touch display and motion sensor.
The year ahead promises to be just as interesting in the iPhone gaming field -- thanks especially to two new features in Apple's iPhone 3.0 software.
Head-to-head and over-the-network gaming will become more widespread thanks to a new peer-to-peer app feature in the iPhone software, and network gaming efforts like Ngmoco's new Plus+ social gaming service, which we called the equivalent of Xbox Live for the iPhone.
In-game commerce, which will not only make games more interesting -- buy a new house for your Sims, or a new toy for your virtual pet -- but will also make the iPhone economy more interesting. This will allow iPhone gaming companies to grow revenues after the point of sale; an important feature.
We're also excited to see what kind of iPhone hardware accessories might come out for gamers -- perhaps a game controller or "Guitar Hero" plastic guitar, or something like that -- but we assume those will take longer to develop.
The challenges for iPhone gaming companies: Standing out in a field where there are tens of thousands of compentitors, and maximizing profits in a store where 99-cent apps tend to reign supreme. Premium games still seem to have the ability to sell at $9.99, but only a small percentage of games can expect to sell in any large quantity at that price.
I know folks like lowly like to dismiss the iPhone as a viable gaming platform, but they always seem to forget that it's so new! Amassing 10,000 titles in one year is impressive. Yes, there are lots of challenges in terms of pricing, competition, marketing, etc. but at the very least, you can't deny that the platform is growing very quickly.
Anyway, as a new iPhone owner, I'm checking out a lot of these games and have been surprised by what I've been able to play so far. And it's only just the beginning! As more and more folks buy smartphones, and more of the current smartphones get better (the iPhone is definitely helping to drive competition), it's going to be exciting to see what happens over the next few years. Will it be a dud like the last "mobile gaming explosion" or will it stick around?
I think the amount of people put off at how 'inaccessible' the original SMG was will be dwarfed by the amount of people who loved the first one + the new owners of the Wii + parents/relatives/friends who know Mario games are always good for...well, everyone. I don't see why it wouldn't do around the same business, if not better.

Well, I think it's going to depend on how many new Wii owners there have been since the first SMG came out, and how many of them are going to "make up the difference" of first-time SMG owners that realized that the game was a lot harder than, say, Wii Sports or Wii Play and won't be interested in SMG2.

I guess we'll have to see. I'm still impressed that SMG racked in the numbers it did even though it was a departure from the old formula in many respects (something I must, on principle, applaud).
That being said, I think people people shouldn't be automatically assuming that the new Mario game will automatically be taking the No. 8 in the rankings. The 2D element might have been a benefit in the past, it might be a liability now. SMG's success might be a reflection that tastes have changed--the 2D game might flop. Or it might be huge, I think it could go either way. Super Paper Mario didn't make that list, despite the fact that many people, myself included, enjoy Mario RPGs more than the platformers.

Wait and see, in any case.
I actually think it's going to be the opposite ... New Super Mario Bros Wii will sell like gangbusters. I think that will be the game that sells 10+ million copies, similar to how insane New Super Mario Bros on the DS did. That game is super accessible to everyone, and appears to virtually sell itself.
I certainly think SMG2 is going to do well. Anyone who thinks its going to bomb is being silly. I just don't expect it to sell as amazing as gamers-on-forums seem to think it will.
I think there is a 0% chance that NSMB Wii 'flops'. I'd go so far as to call it 'physically impossible'.
In retrospect, 'flop' to me would mean the sales like Super Paper Mario or less over the lifetime. Then again, for less established franchises, those are fantastic sales. 'Flop' is the wrong word.

I recall the heady days of the MacWorld thread that saw the launch of the iPhone. Lord, the amount of crowing that went on there was fantastic. Seeing it become a gaming juggernaut is a delightful validation.

I think JCrooks just needs to stop talking about the Wii and the iPhone. It's getting godsdamned ridiculous, and I frankly don't care about his and llc's little feud or whatever. It's irritating that I come to this thread to figure out what is selling, and to get actual analysts predictions, as stupid as they may be, and I have to wade through even dumber crap.

What's wrong with discussion? What we were talking about with SMG2 and NSMBWii was actually in relation to how we think it'll sell. (Appearantly like gangbusters.)

Feel free to make another thread about whatever you want to discuss.

I really can't wait to see how MH3 is recieved.
No, what you're talking about is NSMBW and SMG2 and I am actually interested in Monster Hunters, because for the longest time I guess I had it confused with Monster Ranchers, so when people talked about it, I was really baffled. Yeah, I know, kind of amusing, but that sort of shit I'd be happy to talk about and follow the conversation of.
What JCRooks is talking about is how the iPhone will magically replace the DS as the portable console of choice by some unexplained magic, for some reason I can't possibly understand. Oh, and also the Wii is over-priced because it's only selling really well, instead of in unprecedented numbers, or something.

Yet somehow we're talking about how NSMBW, SMG2 and iPhone games may possibly sell. In a sales thread. Silly us, apparently we needed to put that stuff in the thread about artichoke hearts. Sorry 'bout that.
Seriously, this is what we talk about. And no one called the Wii overpriced, we're speculating when Nintendo will drop the price. Via a business decision. That will affect sales. ....oh wait, that belongs in the artichoke heart thread, doesn't it?

Thanks for putting words in my mouth?
I'm not saying the iPhone will magically replace the DS at all. Just presenting the facts: iPhone gaming has gotten pretty big in only a year. And I'm not sure where you're going with the Wii quote.
I think part of the issue is that you think this thread should only be able "how many copies did X sell this month", since it is named "video game sales thread". However, most of us regulars have turned into a general "Games Industry / Business" thread a long time ago. And it's not just about "video games" either, at least not for me ... which is why I bring in things like iPhone and Facebook/web-gaming from time to time.

Essentially most of us here enjoy talking about how the sales of different media/gaming effects the industry that we love and how the industry is being shaped by said sales...which is why we talk about everything from BluRay to console warz to purple PS3 wands.
It all revolves around said sales discussion and how that is involved in an industry we are all invested in.
I personally think we should now have an artichoke thread.

Why don't you mention it as a 'counter-point'? You know... Instead of bitching about what others post, you could, perhaps, contribute.
I wish we had a good source for download game sales - I'd love to see how well Plants vs. Zombies is selling.
That would be like the holy grail. Unfortunately, that game is being sold in a number of places and all of them are likely to keep their sales numbers very, very private.
Your best bet is probably to be on the watch for financial reports and interviews with folks from Popcap.

Or it might be huge, I think it could go either way. Super Paper Mario didn't make that list, despite the fact that many people, myself included, enjoy Mario RPGs more than the platformers.
Wait and see, in any case.
Duh.
No no! SMG2 will sell 20--no, 25 million copies because it is Mario on the Wii!
Duh.

In retrospect, 'flop' to me would mean the sales like Super Paper Mario or less over the lifetime. Then again, for less established franchises, those are fantastic sales. 'Flop' is the wrong word.

If you can divine any connection from UK Charts -->NPD, The Conduit debuts at #32 in the UK. Madworld opened at #29 and 67k in NPD.
I really can't wait to see how MH3 is recieved.

Feel free to make another thread about whatever you want to discuss.

If you're going to talk about web-gaming at least mention Yahoo!
It all revolves around said sales discussion and how that is involved in an industry we are all invested in.
I personally think we should now have an artichoke thread.

Why don't you mention it as a 'counter-point'? You know... Instead of bitching about what others post, you could, perhaps, contribute.

I'll be shocked if we ever get a DLC equivalent of NPD, though. Sigh.
That would be like the holy grail. Unfortunately, that game is being sold in a number of places and all of them are likely to keep their sales numbers very, very private.
Your best bet is probably to be on the watch for financial reports and interviews with folks from Popcap.
