Allod's style really isn't too far removed from WoW's

Didn't we have this discussion with practically every high fantasy MMO released since WoW, already?
Basically same as before: who gives a flying hoot? It's different enough to tell the games apart and there's no blatant stealing of textures/models going on (unlike 4story and early versions of Perfect World)
Man, the reason why Allods looks so damn good is because they don't use the old method of texture mapping, and instead just paint right on the models via Photoshop.
In theory, that would do the same thing. But you lose the ability to reuse items and just retexture them. Which is not necessarily a bad thing.
Well technically it's not painting on the acutal model, it's still working with texture maps, but you're painting the maps while they're still on the model's topography versus breaking them down into a flat plane and painting within UV coords.

It's subtle, especially because good texture artists can achieve the same look with either method. But time constraints work against the older method to add details - look at the Dictator guy's face in the last page. Or his cape for that matter, some really nice detail painted in.
I can't wait for APB to get released. I just love it when a new game like that or Champions Online or something that has a robust character customization tool because I can count on someone here making something totally; badass, hilarious, insensitive, or just downright dirty.
