[Recommend on!] Enjoyable, but not too fast paced PC games

I'm kind of in a laid back mood at the moment, and I won't be able to do much in the next few days anyway, so I'm on the lookout for a new PC game. I don't want something that requires the reflexes of a fighter pilot, but I do want something fairly challenging.

I'm thinking I might like to play as a single or small group of characters; I don't want to be controlling an army or organising falling blocks. I particularly like games with strong characterisation or interesting, unique storylines. A good setting would be a nice touch too, but I don't want to play a sandbox game, like Morrowind for example, and I'd prefer not to have to wade through pages of text to truly appreciate the setup. It doesn't have to be light-hearted either; it may be fairly dark or even a horror game.I'd also like to avoid games with complex skill-point systems (I generally end up hating them since I'm a perfectionist).

None of the above are absolutely compulsory, though, so long as you can recommend me a good game.

Games similar to what I'm looking for: Beyond Good and Evil (my absolute favourite game), Braid, Portal, Syberia, Shadow of the Colossus, Oddworld: Abes Odyssey.

If you want a little group of well realised characters with great writing and challenging, strategic battles (that you can pause anytime to issue commands) than you should look no further than Baldur's Gate 2 + Throne of Bhaal. The old D&D level up/skill points aren't that complex either.

Other than that..how about Commandos 2? Or perhaps 3, but I haven't played it so I don't know if its any good. 2 is brilliant though and will be really cheap now.

I gave Baldur's Gate 2 a go a long time back and didn't like it. Since then I've been wary of it, but I should give it another go.

    Commandos I know nothing about.

Its essentially a puzzle game in disguised as a strategy game, and is very good but a bit dated at this point. On the bright side there's no overriding narritive or anything (besides "IT ARE WW2") so you can probably just go ahead and get whatever the newest one is.

Yeah you get a few different classes of guys, a green beret, a thief, a sniper, a spy etc and you use their individual skills to complete the map objectives. So it's basically puzzle solving as you plan a way to blow up a fuel dump without getting caught and stuff.

I would get 2 since 1 was quite brutally hard and 3 I haven't heard such good things about.

The Hunter is an extremely laid back (and good!) hunting game (you'd be surprised!) with a beautiful setting and good challenging stealth gameplay. No story or characterization.

Did you play World of Goo yet? You ought to like it given some of your indie favorites.

I can't quite tell because I haven't played all your favorites, but you might try the rather old adventure game Blade Runner. Just check a guide if something has you stumped in the late game.

It's really hard to think of a game with good character that doesn't involve RPG skill mechanics, twitch control, or sandbox gameplay.

I came in to say World of Goo as well. It's really fun cool looking.

    Edit: What about Thief?

I thought about The Witcher. The skills don't matter too much, good characterization and story. Some "twitch" gameplay in terms of timing the sword moves but not really.

The only thing to watch out for is if you are an impatient completionist like me. I could not stand running back and forth all over the maps to polish off quests. Great game other than that.

Dawn of War 2 is a pretty sweet RTS, no base building, just 4 groups of units at any time, and tactics prevail over rushes and sheer numbers. Also it has Diablo-like loot system and boss battles. It's a great game.

Multiplayer is broken and there are only a handful of single-player campaign maps. They just rotate them to make them seem different. If you want something that plays like a strategy game with a plot, i'd consider playing battle for wesnoth.

If you can handle the graphics of the old games, the Thief series is worth a good, hard look.

No stats to worry about. Dark story. Developed world that doesn't require tons of reading (although reading the parchments you come across certainly helps to flesh it out). Twitch reflexes are pretty much unnecessary as opposed to meticulous planning. It can be quite challenging in the harder difficulty levels (ie, you can't kill anyone in most levels).

Mind you, I love the series so I think everyone would love it, but it seems to fit your requirements. The first two games might be a tad difficult to find, though, and as noted - they're old, so the graphics might be a hurdle to overcome.
