There are basically three things working in concert to keep tanks alive
1. Healing. Simple, restores the health the tank has lost. Obivously, the tank has to still have health remaining after he takes damage for healing to do anything at all.
2. The tank's avoidance. This simply prevents him from taking damage, but its chance. Increasing it increases his chance to survive and take no damage from a given attack, but is not certain.
3. Effective Health. This is armor, HP, and absorb effects like Power Word Shield. These directly reduce the damage the tank takes. Every healer class has some way of buffing this. Shaman have Ancestral Awakening and Stoneskin Totem. Paladins have Devotion Aura, Sacred Shield, and Blessing of Kings. Priests have Fort, Inspiration, and their shield spells. Druids have Mark of the Wild. Not too sure whether druids have anything else too.
The kicker is that of the four classes, three don't even have to be healing to use their most powerful EHP buffs, they're static. Additionally Warriors have Commanding Shout and Warlocks have Blood Pact (though they don't stack), and they aren't healing classes at all.
Shaman have no big static EHP buffs, which isn't really the shaman's fault, but it does make tanking raid content without any of the other three present in any capacity more difficult.

Arguably, as long as you have at least one properly geared and specced priest and shaman who knows what they are doing, the uptime is 100% after the initial pull.
This group did not really fall into those categories.
Looking back I think the OT may not have even been crit immune, which explains a lot.
It was a bad group and the badness of that group and its composition is not an indictment of resto shaman in general.

Sounds like someone should roll a druid alt. My gearing process is two simple steps:
Step 1: Get rogue gear.
Step 2: Put stamina gems in it.
Unrelated Happy: Vezax 25 Hard mode down, huzzah. It only took us like four months and major nerfs to get our casters to not die to shadow crash, mostly.
One unexpected sticking point in this fight was interrupts. We couldn't get two hit-capped non-shaman interrupters (seriously, wtf Shattered Oath death knights), so we had to use two shamans. The two second spell lockout on wind shear meant that we interrupted about 115 Searing Flame casts over the course of the kill. And I didn't just make up a really big number, the shamans combined for 104 interrupts between them and random people spot-interrupted about 10 more.

Double Hate: They aren't gonna do anything about it, are they?
They do seem to have given colisseum instances priority, even when instance shortages are at their worst on my server, you can usually walk right into the new 5 man or raids without a hiccup.
I think we have a finite number of instance servers and so some instances have to be given priority over others.
Some people in guild trying to level their 2nd and 3rd alts were trying to get in SFK this weekend and couldn't and were bitching. Gah.
In 10-man Ulduar:
Unbroken (Guild first, not that it's all that tough!)
Thorim hardmode (Guild second)
Freya+2 (Guild first. I'm sure we could have done +3 having seen the nerfs)
Vezax hardmode (Guild first)
Yogg-saron no-death oneshot, leading to, for many of us:
Champion of Ulduar (Alliance first on our server)
Iron Council - Steelbreaker Last (Guild first)
Feeling rather pleased with ourselves, we strolled off to Sarth+3 to use up the remaining time:
*FINALLY* got Gotta Go When The Volcano Blows
Rolled 100 on the drake.
And after all that broke up, went off to do the outland fishing quest and got Muckbreath. Just one croc to go!
Inspiration/Ancestral Awakening are more powerful than Fort.
They are procs, not static.
Uptime on fort is 100%, uptime on insp/awakening is <100%
I'd be surprised that if you had a shaman healing the MT, Ancestral Awakening would not be on the tank 100% of the time. It lasts for 15 seconds and you'd have to be incredibly unlucky to not have at least one healing crit land in that time, considering the new tidal waves change.
Anyway, slight happy; with the new levelling via pvp I ended up in an incredibly silly AV. This bg seems to be full of non-80's, all wanting to level, and they know that in order to get their experience, they need to win the game.
So despite my slight concern that my side was going to get spanked, all the low levels went off and zerged the attackers at galv, and then stopped anybody getting any towers. They certainly played better than alot of the old games with 80's just rushing to the end.
I quite enjoyed healing level 72's against level 80's, and seeing the 80's die.

Hate: Questhelper doesn't seem to be working properly...it shows quest turnins on the map, but not the icons that show you where to go for each quest.
Trophy of the Crusade, the T9 tier token. Somewhat struggling to determine just how to handle this in our loot system, the idea of an item which can fit one of five slots *and* on top of that won't actually be cashed in for quite some time is proving a bit of a problem from the point of view of trying to coax players to take it; they're understandably reluctant to take an item now that they won't be able to use for several weeks (at least two if they farm the heck out of heroic dailies) - and in converting the tier item they lose out on emblem items. On top of that the *heroic* tier token (Regalia) - when we start being able to get them - don't have that time delay before you can make use of them and would be direct upgrades from any of the earlier tier items.
I think the key to making it attractive is to emphasise the one-of-five-slots factor, since you're not committing to an item to fill *one* slot, you're going for one that can fit *any* slot and you can choose which when you actually have enough emblems - so if you fill the slot you were planning to use it in you can just re-plan for another.
We're arguing around the point right now, but we're going to need to make a decision in a couple of days.

calculate the minimum number of weeks before you could reasonably expect to have enough badges for your first tier piece. charge minimum points for the item until then, then jack it up to normal tier prices after then. this encourages people to pick it up while its cheap.
if you don't use a points system this doesnt apply obviouly
Only 2nd BIS out of Ulduar but you know. I hope they kept wiping after I left :V
Were there other non druid tanks rolling on it? Because I kind of understand their point then.
For example if a spellcaster ring with +hit on it is a huge upgrade for a healer as well as a huge upgrade for a dps... I would unequivocally give it to the dps. If you want to complain about anything, you should complain to Blizzard that there should be more rings for you.

I was rolling for Druid tanking, the ring has Druid tanking stats
Happy: When WOTLK first came out and my druid used to be an herbalist, I made a macro that I would spam while flying around in Storm Peaks picking herbs which basically was just:
/target Dirkee
/target Vyragosa
/target Time
In all the time I spent herbing I found Dirkee a few times and only found Vyragosa dead once; never Time-Lost Proto-Drake. Eventually I expanded that macro to be the button I hit for max camera distance as well as dismounting vehicles, and I have it on all of my characters.
Well, early Saturday morning I logged on my death knight to do the JC daily quick, and I mount up and fly out to kill some iron dwarves in Storm Peaks. I am coming up to the harpy valley and hit the macro button to fix camera distance and what do you know...I target Time-Lost Proto-Drake for like 1 second and then it disappears. I nearly shit myself and immediately panic trying to find out where it went, flying in a big circle mashing the macro and finally pick him up again as he's flying east hugging the mountain line. The problem is that there is literally no way for me to grab him as he's about a mile above the ground below him so with my hands literally shaking I'm just flying along with him and trying to watch out for any other players. After about 30 seconds of this he finally takes a turn into the other entrance of the harpy valley (above that frozen waterfall thing) and I'm able to dismount and pull him with howling blast and kill him just as another horde flies up.
The best part is that this is the character that needed a sweet mount the most (druid has all the raiding proto drakes, priest has rusty proto and twilight drake, paladin has almost rusty proto and black drake).
I see that and raise you

Whats with all the shaman these days? Did everyone have this miraculous idea to re-roll for 3.2?
Luckily my guild only has one :P So I ended up busting my ass and in the first two days of 3.2? 2/5 t8.5, tons of healing upgrades from the instances run and enough conq badges to buy a couple additional off set pieces.
Was alot of fun, did the 10 man Tournament and the heroics a bunch and walked away with alot of nice swag. SWAG.

Bizarrely - as someone who was used to occasionally running Molten Core with 5+ paladins (I think our record was eight), it's been really strange in the last couple of months to be outnumbered by shammies. Certainly not complaining - I think the lack of reliable Heroism really hindered us throughout TBC.
It was more due to the fact that I liked the play style and group play of shaman rather than DKs. Also, I don't think Blizzard has a clue what they are doing with DKs (similar to pallies).
Hate: Thorium. (I'm leveling BS. At 295 so those last 5 points are only like what, 70 more stacks? Ugh.)
What I did was chain farm DM East when I leveled BS. Enter in the entrance at the east side of the "T" as you come into DM, jump down into the garden, then run up and kill the satyr boss, then go in and kill the last boss. You can skip all the mobs, and the tunnel exit has 2-3 Rich Thorium Veins always.
Hate: The Alliance and it's douchebagginess. I log on to my dwarf rogue that I rarely play because everytime I do I get annoyed by any chat that I come across. I'm at the auction house seeing what's on and some random guy whispers "you suck as a rogue". I had to laugh because it came out of nowhere.
Granted, horde isn't that much better, but at least I have to say something first to get a reponse like that.
