Best Call of Duty to buy today?

I'm not super familiar with the CoD series, I played and really enjoyed 2. I know that Modern Warfare was the huge superhit but I like playing the WW2 stuff a lot. The reviews I've been reading of World at War seem generally positive. Any recommendations?

COD 4 is far and away the best. World at War is ok.

Single player, I assume? It's worth going back to 1 + the expansion, then you can either skip 4 if you don't like Modern Warfare or check it out regardless. For multiplayer, WaW is pretty good, but the single player is a slight step backwards from CoD4 according to most people.

Realistically, you can go wrong with any of them. They are all (some slightly) above average. They are short enough to be able to play them all.

Yeah, you might want to check out the original Call of Duty + expansion, it was an excellent game.

Call of Duty 4 is excellent, though. Well worth checking out. I expect most people will recommend that one first.

World at War is probably my least favorite CoD on the PC, but I don't think it's bad at all.

(I'm coming from a single player perspective here)

CoD 4 is the best of them all. You won't regret the purchase at all.

I'm a little biased, but COD4 is really, really good. The Treyarch team did a really good job with WaW. They got a lot of criticism for COD3 but they learned alot from the project and WaW is quite good.
