[D&D 4E - OOC] GIANT ANTS : words

ITS FRAKKING ANTS, MAN.

This is a short adventure featuring giant ants, and of course other monsters, attacking a town. This may be the only thread for this game. This is also a template text document. It has spoilers because I hate reading walls of text, especially when they are my own. When I say short I mean that this game will probably cover maybe levels 2 - 4, or that is my target at least. The game will feature a party of 5 characters.

The game in 250 words.
(Cue music accompanied by raspy baritone voice over)

Screw all this. It's giant ants, man…

A. A bunch of sentences that describe how the game is run.
edit: Relaxed and simplified restrictions since this is a shorter game.

Table:
Current title: GIANT ANTS COLON ITS FUCKING ANTS, MAN.
Time Zone: I live in the Eastern Standard Time Zone, so the play time will kind of be more favorable to that zone. (8am - 6pm M through F) or something similar to that, assuming RL doesn't kick my ass.
Starting Level: 2 - See PHB for information on starting a second level character.
Creation rules: 22 Points Flat (And a 3d3-5 Roll). The roll is of mechanical importance. Do not roll it yet.
Target start: When I have a coherent party of 5, and everyone is ready.
Medium: PBP only
Maptool version: N/A
Maptools Session Length: N/A
The Table - Rules: Not too serious/rigid interpretation of the ruleset.
The Table - Content: Look at the title. Think.
Difficulty: ITS BANANAS.
Experience Required: A basic understanding of how to play would be great?
Books Required: Any 4E content is allowed, at my discretion. Don't be a dick?

List of acceptable races:
  • All PHB Races.
  • All PHB2 Races, yes. even Deva.
  • Robats are allowed too (Warforged)

Be it because their flavour doesn't fit the game or because I just don't like em as player characters, the others aren't acceptable at all. I'm sorry for the inconvenience that may cause.

List of acceptable classes:
  • No hybrids - Haven't read the articles, probably won't be for a while.
  • No monks - Flavour, only glossed through the articles.
  • This has the amenities and tech level of an late 1800s era civilization, including indoor plumbing.

B."House" Notes
I'm pretty open to suggestion about things, and I prefer to keep the game going rather than deadlock over rules.

Here's some notes about my post notations:

(A<SKILL><[KEYWORDS]> - <WHO>: <SUCCESS/FAIL>) You will see this from time to time in the posts I make. It means that a skill or something was applied either actively or passively that has application to a specific player or players. This is usually accompanied by text that is this color.

Text that is in deep sky blue is usually special speech.

Bold, Orange text is event-related text, and is usually seen during combat.

Other markups are used from time to time as well to pretty things up.

C. The Party
Baern (Invoker, Divine, Dwarf, Controller) [Dortmunder] (Sheet)
Calls down divine light to kick ass in the name of Moradin... is anything else necessary?

Inutchuk (Fighter, Martial, Goliath, Defender) [Horseshoe] (Sheet)
Giant ants meet giant... man.

Jenny Pope (Ranger, Martian, Human, Striker) [Quoth] (Sheet)
Two time Mossy Vale Hide and Seek Champion!

Matthias (Cleric, Divine, Half-Elf, Leader) [REG Rysk] (Sheet)
Is an hero!

Quinnten (Sorcerer, Arcane, Human, Striker) [SnowSquall] (Sheet)
Once a farmer, now a sorcerer, beware his frosty dragon breath.

Past Members

Fruggle (Swordmage, Arcane, Gnome, Defender) [feeddannow] (Sheet)
A gnome's gnome, this little fellow compensates for his small size with his big heart. Don't ask him why his eyes are white.
Dorin Elinanor (Bard, Arcane, Half-elf, Leader) [SniperGuy] (Sheet)
Enjoys women in three different flavors: good, unaligned, and evil.
Yarek Ironheart (Ranger, Martial, Dwarf, Striker) [Mike Danger] (Sheet)
Every group has a crazy survivor of some unknown horror that doesn't make sense at all. Yarek's entire village was killed by giant ants. Ridiculous, huh?
Ginnaletha (Artificer, Arcane, Eladrin, Leader) [Cleonicus] (Sheet)

    Welcome to Ambrose Hills...

    AmbroseHillsMap.gif
Where the Saccharine Plains kiss the Windhelm Mountains lies the town of Ambrose Hills. This town grew rapidly from its simple origins as a rest stop for merchant convoys making their way through the mountain range. Plagued by frequent bandit attacks, merchants of the convoys united to build this town, trusting each other with the safeties of their families. In time, more individuals would call the place home, and under the watchful eye of the Vespoidean Empire the town grew rapidly.

Today, the town is well known for its open-air marketplace, which is fed well by the gleanings of the three major trade routes that intersect there. Many visitors come and go, as do merchants seeking to sell their wares.

Population: 7,230; 1,400 rural. The people of Ambrose come in all shapes and sizes. Farmsteads dot the terrain around the town, and travelers come from far and wide to carry out business here.

Government: Ambrose Hills is run by a group of merchants. The town and its sprawl are heavily self-regulated.

Defense: The town employs a small guard for all of its policing and defensive needs. Within the walls of the city, its people are safe. Farmsteads located on the far outskirts of the town have been attacked by roving bandits and monsters, however.

Inns: Jasper Moon, Green Apple, Hotel Inn; Both Jasper Moon and Green Apple are expensive Inns with full services. The Hotel Inn has soft mattresses that have been freshly prestidigitized.

    Taverns: Many.

Supplies: Run by merchants, Ambrose Hills has a fairly large and open marketplace, where one could find just about anything they would want. The local farms often compete with each other, and at times this has even escalated to violence and feuds.

Temples: A Shrine for Avandra is located along the Saccharine Plains route, and there are also temples for Pelor and Erathis within the town.
Ambrose Hills is the town where this adventure takes place in. The starting point of the adventure involves your approach to the town, heralds of insectoid demise…

I didn't mark every point of interest or label the roads on that export of the map. River trade occurs, but is rare. Just as I didn't dot out the various buildings in the town, the farmsteads haven't been detailed in this particular upload of the map.

    ANTUARY

There are many species of Giant Ant that you will encounter throughout this game. This post contains information on these magnificent insects.
    Giant Ant Hole
The Giant Ant Hole is where giant ants come from. These holes can appear anywhere on the field of battle. Giant Ant Holes are usually attended to by a Defender and are rarely found without several Drones nearby. The holes are designed so that in the event of a breach by outsiders, their collapse leaves no tunnels back to the hive. Wizardly Ants built them. Also, you positively do not want to go down one of these holes. YES I KNOW THAT THE HOLE IS NOT EVEN A CREATURE BUT WHERE ELSE CAN I PUT THIS? >_>
    Giant Ant Drone
Representing the bulk of the ants seen during the invasion, these are the workers of the hive. Drones wander around aimlessly, though they occasionally attack and drag down creatures into their ant holes.

    Giant Ant Soldier
The second most common ant seen during the invasion, these ants represent the “infantry” of the ants. Their crushing mandibles and stingers make them a threat in close range.

    Giant Ant Defender
These ants can be easily distinguished from the other ants by their massive, shield-like heads. It is their duty to guard ant holes from attack. However it should be noted that they are also capable of performing a devastating charge attack, if provoked.

    Giant Ant Boomers
Though they look like drones, these ants can be distinguished from their drone brethren by the large amounts of ant goo that flows from every orifice and seam in their body, including their eyes. Aptly named, these creatures charge toward threats and explode, using their own guts to immobilize and restrain the more resistant prey.

    Giant Ant Harvesters
These large flying ants seem to lack offensive abilities, and behave much like drones. Large flying ant drones that are capable of carrying multiple victims to their demise by air, that is. With low defenses to up-close , their preference is to go after prey that has been sufficiently trapped or unconscious.

    ANT HOLES AND YOU!

During Ant Attack encounters, hazards surprisingly called Ant Holes will be dispersed throughout the battlefield. Ants will be able to use these to move across the field, and additionally each mound has a number of drones associated with it. Drones are small creatures approximately the size of Marmaduke.

Ant drones are non-combatants that are handled for the most part like minions, with the exception of their not existing on the initiative block. If conditions are met where they take action, it occurs on the initiative of the ant hole they are associated with. Area attacks that target creatures operate normally against drones. Currently, powers or effects that trigger from killing a creature will not trigger off killing a drone.

Drones can be killed directly using the following at-will attack. To minimize the strain on your action economy, this attack is a minor action. Drones have the stats and defenses of level 1 minions. The stats of the mounds however vary by their level and type.
    Stomp!
    You stomp on the ant.
    At-Will, <This power has no keywords.>
    Minor Action
    Target: Adjacent drone.
Attack: Strength or Dexterity vs. AC
    Hit: The drone dies.

Drones, much like all the ants are filled with copious amounts of hemolymph (blood), which means things will get messy... Does this somehow imply further mechanical surprises down the line that I'm hiding from you? Yes.

    K. Pretty much think that's all the relevant info for this game for now. If it wasn't meant to be, ah well.

The map has a very loose scale, but I would say it's 2-5 miles per square. Hadn't decided for sure.

edit: plot progression will probably be of the five-act variety... arriving, growing problems, invasion, killingering, resolution.

    5. ANTS!
"Ants! We'll, this is the season for 'em. Why were you leaving out a baby to tempt 'em into coming to your room? The winter prolly didn't kill enough of them off, so they's out looking for some food to bring back to the nest. Don't you know an unguarded baby is like a picnic on a clear spring day for carnivorous ants? Get's 'em all uppity and bothered if you don't spray for 'em. They tend to be ruin my crop o' potatoes most seasons if I don't keep 'em in check from time to time. You seem pretty fond of that baby of yours. It's watermelon season at the moment, but I'll see what I can do."

    1) Currently in S.H.A.R.D. and Mining Rites.

    2) Mountain Time, able to post at least once a day

3)Dorian Machismo, Warlock. Dorian is tall and bald, his head covered with tattoos. He always assumes the worst and speaks bluntly. He has romantic ideas about heroism and dying heroically, but he scorns to be slain by mere ants. If there were sunglasses in this world, he would wear them, although not for long, because he'd be whipping them off dramatically at every opportunity. Dorian Machismo knows the horrible truth: the ants want our women.

    4)Mythweavers Sheet coming

    5)
"Ma'am, your baby is already dead. The ants have probably sucked the brain from its soft little skull. But I swear to you, I will find that ant who took it and I will put it in the ground." He blinked. "And if it's already in the ground, well, I'll kill it."

The rules for rolling characters seemed confusing when I first read the thread…

Yes, I rolled back most of the requirements as they are what I would use for my full-setting, and this isn't in said setting. However, at this point I am looking for the following:
    1) Current games you are in or run. If you feel you were awesome in some game or whatever you can mention past ones too?
    2) Availability M-F for maek post, and time zone you are in.
    3) A brief description of your character's appearance and personality.
    4) Link to Mythweaver's character sheet or whatever.
    5) WHAT THE FUCK, A GIANT ANT JUST KIDNAPPED MY BABY! HELP ME STRANGER. (Behind a spoiler, reply in character to that).

While mechanics are of some import, the other 4 things wrapped around weigh in a lot more. I don't expect a full on monologue here either, of course.

    1) Currently in Halls of Tizun Thane with you, Donuts.
    2) I work from home. Am usually at a computer--my own--between 8 & 8.
    3) Borius Befuddlement is an old man. He doesn't have any secrets. He doesn't have good luck. He doesn't even have a good memory! No sir, the only thing Borius DOES have is his ability to cast magic--and his resourcefulness, which he'll gladly explain to you over a pint our two of the local variety. Which, of course, you'll be paying for! After all, it isn't quite every day you get to hear the tales of a WIZARD, now is it?
Borius is a wild-haired old codger, who learned the tricks of magic a bit late in life, but is seeking to make u for it now with his adventures.
    4) http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=133559 wip
    5) WTF, A GIANT--
"WHAT? A GIANT ANT? Can such a thing... exist? Where is this creature, noble woman! And pray tell, what are you doing after I'm done examining it? Are you perchance free for some--you know--good times, parties, that sort of thing? I can show you a magic trick that I do--wait wait, hear me out--it's as if I have 12 fingers, if you know what I mean..." finishes the strange old man with his least attractive leer.
Note: I don't understand the 3d3-5 role, but that's fine. I'm going with point buy, & just tell me what to roll when I need to & I shall.

    1) Currently not in any games, but I'm hoping to change that. I should also note here but I'm pretty much a complete newbie at D&D (we all got to start somewhere). Although I've been reading/following things since listening the first PA/PvP podcast, and have a small army of characters made in the character creator.

    2) I'm in the Eastern time zone, and there's good chance I'll be online most nights (usually 9 pm to 10/11 ish).

    3) Quinnten (Quinn); Human Dragon Sorcerer. Quinn looks like the quintessential average human male in his early adult years. Short, brown hair; average height; brown eyes; wears clothing that could blend in with the natives of most villages. However, behind the averageness, lies the powers and abilities of a dragon, and Kraten would love to be rid of it. He's not sure how he got his draconic abilities, whether he's some sort of reincarnated dragon or some ancient ancestor made some sort of pact; but he'd rather be rid of them and return to his normal life. He set off to find someone or something somewhere that could get rid of his abilities since he'd rather just be normal. But, like allmost everything else, Quinn has an average amount of money, and that average is not that much. So he's taken to using his abilities to help earn some coin so he can continue his search. Even if it means taking on some giant ants!

    4) Mythweavers Sheet is up

    5) WHAT THE FUCK, A GIANT ANT JUST KIDNAPPED MY BABY! HELP ME STRANGER. (Behind a spoiler, reply in character to that).
"Giant Ant!...Don't worry I can handle this, I think. Now which way did that ant head off too. Allright I'll be right back with your child safe and sound in short order," About to headoff, but stops in midstep, "Now is there a reward or something if I get the child back. Money's good or I'll settle for a good lead on someone that knows something about...You know what, we'll discuss this when I get back with the kid."

    Presenting, Dorin, Half-Elf Bard.

    1) Current games you are in or run. If you feel you were awesome in some game or whatever you can mention past ones too?
I was in one run by SAW, the Forged by Fire game, but it just ended.

    2) Availability M-F for maek post, and time zone you are in.
Available all the time usually, though this weekend i'll be trekking back to the states. Currently in England, but by Sunday evening I'll be steadily back into CST. Should be laptop able the entire time, sans actual on the plane bit though.
    3) A brief description of your character's appearance and personality.
He is very slender, with long legs making him appear slightly taller than he is. His face is very attractive and slim, the only real hint of an elfish heritage is the occasional points of his ears poking through his shaggy hair. Carrying a lute and wearing modest clothing he is constantly humming a small tune when not singing, or stealing winks at the tavernkeep's daughters.
For extra fun, check out his character portrait.
    4) Link to Mythweaver's character sheet or whatever.
http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=117617 whoa baby. And I have a shiny PDF from the character creator I can email or whatever if you'd like.
    5) WHAT THE FUCK, A GIANT ANT JUST KIDNAPPED MY BABY! HELP ME STRANGER. (Behind a spoiler, reply in character to that).
"My god madam! No need to worry, I shall write this wrong. I shall save your baby. But first let me soothe you with a song. And perhaps you and I can create a new child, before I find your first."

There's a decent chance I totally fucked up somewhere in the character creation bit, so if you see anything, please alert me.

    None. Long time listener....

    2) Availability M-F, and time zone you are in.

I work as an Illustrator from a home studio, so I am available to at least check in all day, and post throughout the day as needed. EST.

    3) A brief description of your character's appearance and personality.

Bahgra is a Longtooth Shifter Barbarian, standing at 5'8" he has a lean build and would be considered hairy if he were a human. He likes to keep his hair cut short and clean to appear more human than the usual long hobo look of most forest dwellers. He also keeps a full beard to cover some of his more animalistic features.

Bahg is mostly reserved and somewhat naive, as he is just now making his way through civilized society. However he opens up and becomes playfully competitive in combat, where his primal instincts seem to take control of his actions and mannerisms.

He feels most content in situations which demand his loyalty and camaraderie. Aims to please, and would give his life in order to help a loyal friend.

Edit: Changed Character submitted due to a preponderance of strikers!

    1) Current games you are in or run. If you feel you were awesome in some game or whatever you can mention past ones too?
I'm in some other Virtual Table Top games at present, but nothing at the PA Boards. I've been playing RPGs for about.. 16 years now, though play by post is relatively new to me, and something I want to check out.

    2) Availability M-F for maek post, and time zone you are in.
I've got loads of free time usually, my time zone is GMT+9 ... that is to say, I live in Japan, so I am a future time traveler for you. That's no worries, though, because - as I said before - I usually have scads of free time, and could 90% say I can post everyday.

    3) A brief description of your character's appearance and personality.
Fruggle MacPhearsom is short, even for a gnome - but he never lets that get to him. In fact, nothing ever really unsettles the diminutive spellsword - whose unbreakable optimism and cheery disposition often drives his enemies (or friends) to madness. His driving force is curiosity mixed with a lethal dose of positive thinking - there's nothing he won't do, nowhere he won't go if he thinks that doing so will benefit someone else in some small way - or failing that - if it will at least be an interesting story to tell later. He tends towards wearing outrageously flashy clothes, in gaudy, eye-offending colors (perhaps in a quiet attempt at getting some attention).

Fruggle hurries off, not waiting for any answer from the despairing woman - who (though he feels sorry for her) was honestly quite a downer; he hastily goes in search of a suitable "disguise" for his clever plan.

    1) I am Quinn the (mighty) Paladin in The Shackled City. I may be running Seekers of the Ashen Crown next month as a PBP.

    2) I have tons of free time M-F EST--not working this summer while I'm off from school (yay relatively high-payin' IT job at school), although I will be gone for a week in July while I am chaperonin' for my old Boy Scout troop at summer camp.

    3) Yarek Ironheart is of average height and build for a dwarf. His beard is patchy in a few places as if it has been recently burned and did not grow back correctly. His eyes constantly shift back and forth as he scans the room, and when he is not pulling deeply from his hip flask or cleaning his weapons, he constantly seems to be surveying and planning. His family was taken from him when the ants got into their ancient dwarfhome high in the Windhelms, and he has dedicated himself to exterminating the giant monstrosities once and for all. Ironheart travels attempting to discern their patterns, and even carries an ant farm inside a big glass bottle that he studies regularly, hoping to glean insights into the giant ants' patterns from their smaller cousins. (inspired by this image, if you're curious.)

He respects especially those who throw themselves wholly into a cause, and especially enjoys hunting conversations--tales of flushing techniques, traps, and great catches.

    4) Two-Weapon Ranger
(feel free to point out errors, I feel like the character builder messed something up somewhere)

    5) WHAT THE FUCK, A GIANT ANT JUST KIDNAPPED MY BABY! HELP ME STRANGER.

Finished up with the MythWeaver sheet. I'll also put it in with my original post for my app.

Also a quick question, I'm kind of on the fence with one of my feats, so I'm not sure if I'll decide to change it later and whether that would be allright. I'm leaning to towards keeping it, but I'm not sure. Otherwise, I like where I am with everything else, except maybe the name...

...Yeah, maybe I'll need a name change. The funny thing I can come up with names for any other race. But give me human and its like Bob, or John, or something.

I like to use regular human names for humans as well. I guess we just have good taste.

Myth-Weavers character sheet link should be live in a few seconds here. I am going to bed soonly but will be up early tomorrow to make any adjustments necessary (I don't trust what the character builder told me :P)

    1) Current pbp games you are in: Just was in SHARD.
    2) Availability : Sunday to Monday PST and starting soon I'll have summer so pretty much any time for about 1-2 hours.
    3) A slightly crazed elf who has gone beyond the regular rogue lust for shiny things and has turned it into a compelled lifestyle. His desire to steal is a self-chosen kleptomania developed by habit. His personality reflects his actions more than his actions reflect his personality. Although born with charisma and a certain innocence, while still having these characteristics in appearance, his personality is a rash and quick to fight. He thrives during conflicts and steers his life accordingly. He has a distrustful nature and makes companions and part time accomplices but almost never friends.

He stands at a bit under six feet and weighs slightly less then is average for his height. He is well built from extensive training and constant activity as a thief. He wears pants and shirts that have a weird mixture of greens and browns that fade into the background when he stands still. He wears his crossbow on his back and his two short swords at his waist, with his primary weapon being his duelist's weapon. Hidden upon his person he has daggers and shurikens a plenty. During travel he also wears his backpack and climbers kit. He carries his thieves tools hidden from site in a pocket inside his jacket.

    4) Link to Mythweaver's character sheet or whatever. http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=128567
    5) WHAT THE FUCK, A GIANT ANT JUST KIDNAPPED MY BABY! HELP ME STRANGER. (Behind a spoiler, reply in character to that).
"Are you talking to me? Why would I help you, hahahahha?" Madness danced in his eyes "Unless you are willing to give up something, willing to give up a lot. Perhaps you have something shiny, some hidden wealth, or prehaps your village might be able to pay me, after all I'm not going to do this for free?

(Anyone want to explain encumberance to me?)

Encumbrance as far as armor goes is the penalty applied to your speed STR, DEX and CON based skill checks while wearing a given piece of armor. Does that answer your question?

Also, fixed the typo that referenced the variable point buy that I normally use. In answer to the question about it though, the 3d3-5 is used to resolve things behind the curtain in combat and outside of it. Do not roll it now. Anyhoo I have the following, in alphabetical order by class role and person:

    Controller
    streever: Borius (Wizard, Human)

    Defender
    Torgo: Kavaki (Warden, Goliath)

    Leader
    SniperGuy: Dorin Elinanor (Bard, Half-elf)

    Striker
    Bratr: Elendin (Rogue, Elf)
    Honez: Bahgra (Barbarian, Longtooth Shifter)
Mike Danger: Yarek Ironheart (Ranger, Dwarf)
    Saurfang: Dorian (Warlock, ?)
    SnowSquall: Quinnten (Sorcerer, Human)

So, at this point 3 class roles are pretty much uncontested. o_O

@bratr: It'd make my life a lot easier if you went with one submission. You can change what you submitted, sure... but yea, one dude per person is kind of my preference, tbh.

@tofy: Yea dude, I don't mind if you applied with that guy. just be aware that I'd prefer to grab people who either haven't been in a game here yet, or had it cut short for whatever reason... and barring any unusual circumstances popping up, that one's going to be playing for a while. ;p

The only other thing I'd throw out there is that because I'd like to keep the flow of this smooth as far as content goes, if there was a deadline for submissions for this, it would be sometime next week that I'd say I felt sufficiently ready to move ahead with this, so there is time to change or do whatever.

Tempted to change characters/roles but I think I got what I want in that character. Plus I think a ranged striker should be easy enough to understand/play.

When I ran this through the character builder, I went through all the level one stuff and didn't buy any equipment, then levelled up to 2 and went back. I had 360 GP.

As per the DMG, a character gets the following:

One magical item of your level - 1. One magical item of your level. One magical item of your level +1. Gold equal to a magical item of your level - 1. Any mundane equipment, within reason.

@Mike: That's what got you the 360 gp.

edit: Another note too about the slots. The game isn't going to run without a functional party of 5. I've only really pulled the names, class and race for people out of what's been given, but, if you're comfortable with your chances getting a spot as a striker then yea, just leave it as is. None of this is first come first serve, and the group ideally will be a mixture of people who actively participate and function well as both a group of players and player characters.

the 3 magical items are a given. when I get to looking at sheets I'd probably be very sad if you somehow collected 40 sunrods because ants live underground. Just saying. :U

unless your character's background was a traveling sunrod dealer/swordsman.

in which case I'd probably hate you. ;p
