We had a lan session last weekend where we crammed six of us into my small apartment and had a hoot. However, we decided beforehand to play an old classic, Battlefield 1942 with the Pirates! mod. The reason we went for the older mod is because we all each had our own copy of 1942, and not everyone had their own BF2 copy. So before the gaming began, I went around to everyone's machine, installing the game (none of us had played it in years, we used three different cd's because some had lost theirs to time), following up with the latest patch (1.6.19 I think) with Punkbuster, and then installing the mod. The machines we used were quite varied - five desktops and one laptop, one with XP, three with Vista and two with Windows 7 RC.
And yet when it came to get down to some piratey fun, every single machine gave an error message about differing data, no matter who hosted. Now, I personally installed the game, patch and mod on most of the machines, and left very clear instructions about installing them in that order for those who were connected to the router via ethernet cable (the laptop and another desktop were connected via wifi). We all had exactly the same patch and mod that I had just downloaded the night before. Does anyone know why the game insisted that we had different versions of the game installed, or patch or mod or whatever?
We didn't have the time to uninstall on all machines and install again, but for the next time when we have a lan, should we choose not to install Punkbuster along with the patch? Would Punkbuster be the problem? I'm highly confused.
...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

Thanks, Jebus! That worked, and we had a small, impromptu game last night. The reason I'm posting though is because the game keeps crashing on my desktop. I installed the game exactly as I did with the others, with the same patch and mod, in the same order. I launch the game, go to custom game and launch pirates. Now, either when I host or join a game, the game crashes, Windows telling me that it's experienced an error and nothing more than that.
I thought it might be Windows 7, but my flat-mate installed it on his desktop with the exact same RC disc, and it's working fine on his. I was able to play on my laptop but that's obviously not a perfect solution. Whenever we get six people into the apartment for another lan, I'd like to be able to play it on my desktop while giving the use of my laptop away to a guest who has no machine of their own. I don't suppose anyone has any ideas, but I thought I'd post anyway, and will hope for a helpful reply.
I don't think the specifications of my desktop are all that important for this issue, but may as well post them just in case -
Core 2 Duo E8400
8GB PC6400 memory (don't look at me like that, it was extremely cheap!)
Radeon 4870 1GB (Catalyst 9.5 installed)
Windows 7 RC 64-bit

edit:uninstall and reinstall and see if that fixes it.

You will get the "data differs" message if a No-CD patch is used.
Some don't realize that you can run a "public" server as "Local" and anyone can join, even if they have the same key or an invalid key. The difference in "Internet" and "Local" in this game is that local doesn't broadcast the server info to the browser list but it also doesn't check game keys.
If anyone is interested, I have a new site dedicated to BF1942. I am also a mapper and wish to have weekly testing of custom maps. The site is:
MOD EDIT: Do this again and eat infractions.
This is brand-new and I'm doing everything myself so excuse the fact that there isn't a great deal of content yet. The site is built on Drupal.
