I'm really torn between the two choices so far. I've never really been a big fan of the film noir look, so visually I much prefer Lookouts. But the narrative potential of Automata really grips my soul in a way that is very difficult for me to resist.
At this point I'm really hoping that Jim Darkmagic is going to blow me away, because choosing between story and art makes me feel like a child in the middle of a divorce battle. I don't want to have to choose mommy over daddy.
I would like to see some graphic novels by G&T exploring some of these serious worlds they've created. Just a short series of comics isn't enough for any of them.
Automata is going to get my vote, unless the Jim Darkmagic one blows me away, which it very well could. I like Automata and Lookouts a ton, but Automata wins out for me because I know it's an idea that has been swirling around in Tycho's head for a long while, so I'm hoping that will lead to the most fully realized comic.
I like this one, but I was a bit confused at first. The asshole cops sort of just disappear, and I guess robots can feel? And then Swangee's voice bubble changes from the robotic text to a more humanlike one, even though it's the same box color. Typo, or is it supposed to show that he's more friendly with his partner?
Lookouts is okay but I'm really keen on this. Maybe because I'm not a huge D&D fan.
The term you are looking for is "fantasy".
Well I like fantasy. Lookouts is definitely a giant D&D homage. That's not necessarily a bad thing but I think tabletop players would get more out of the strip than me.

I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.

the fonts look the same to me

It's strange that they don't do this. I'm trying to imagine how quickly their graphic novels would sell out, especially if they sold them at PAX. I wonder if they (or Khoo) decided it wasn't as profitable as doing contract work for game publishers. Or maybe they just don't want to get stuck on one project for too long.
I dunno, I'd consider the Jim Darkmagic to be a less serious comic, and the Lookouts to be a bit more grim and mature. I mean, it has children that have been killed and turned to stone.

Isn't D&D just a big homage to fantasy? This isn't a chicken and the egg thing fantasy was made before D&D and I saw nothing in the comic that would make it seem like Lookouts is about D&D. They are going on an adventure because that's what you make stories about I can't think of a 'fantasy' story that doesn't have an adventure to it (though my knowledge of those types of things is pretty small)
Just because they've talked about D&D alot doesn't mean anytime they do fantasy stuff it's D&D based (in my opinion at least)
The next comic is going to have to be fan-fucking-tastic to beat this. The whole Automata concept has been percolating for probably a decade and I think there's far more to it than just this.
While Lookouts was great, and anything Jim Darkmagic I like, I really can see Automata being an entire book.

Could they be doing artwork/writing for a non-PA game?
I can't tell if you're being intentionally obtuse or just plain ol' wiggin here.

Not at all serious
but robot noir
those are two words that are way more appealing to me than fantasy boy scouts
granted that kind of waters down the actual concept of what they're doing, but even so
you say that like i'm interested in automata
also i won't actually be sad (i will)
This is the only correct response.

Oh shit
I really dug Lookouts but the art style of Automata is a real departure and I want to see more
It's the plural of automaton. Like criteria/criterion.

This one, however, feels pretty different to me.
Ubi has a game coming out involving an assasin with a creed.
So good. Probably going to vote for this.

Unfortunately, the story was never completed, but what has been published is well worth tracking it down.
