The current game I'm in reminded me of another gripe. I hate seeing about six or so people waiting to use a level one teleporter, and no one switches to Engy to help upgrade it.
So if you need to run out into the open as a pyro, eg, if you see someone/someone sees you there isn't a chance that you can burn them, would you keep the shotgun equipped and pellet enemies from a distance or keep the flamethrower equiped so you can reflect some rockets/grenades?
There's really no blanket answer to this. How far away are you, if they're aware of your presence, are they running towards or away from you, is there any cover, etc. Most of the time I prefer to just duck around cover or find a side path. If I wait a few seconds, there's usually someone friendly that will run by as a longer ranged class that I can hide behind til I can find a side path.
Also, can someone give me some tips on using the airblast? I've messed around with it and reflected a rocket or two but the way you guys describe using it makes me think I coule be a much better pyro if I knew how to use it.
The best uses for a leafblower, aside from reflecting things and putting out fires is blowing people into corners after you've lit them on fire, then taking the axe to them. Blowing people, not only ubers, is pretty effective.
This is just immensely satisfying to do. Plus it kills demos and soldiers faster than just holding down the flame thrower. Heavies too technically, though I tend to lose that one unless I come up from behind while they're taking fire from others.
I've made it a point lately to switch to engy and help them out whenever possible lately. Like getting sentries back up or upgrading TPs.
If there's another guy already upgrading, that's cool. But when I respawn and see six guys pushing each other off for the time it recharges, I just facepalm.
1.) We have a lot of new people on the servers now, which can be a good thing.
2.) Way less demos lately, way less, even on dustbowl. The last week ive played, Ill look at the class line-up and see 0 demos on almost every map. My theory is... number one is attributing to number two because demo seems like a harder class to pick up and play when first starting or everyone is still playing spy and sniper.

I've been bored of demo as of recent, I'm not sure what it is.
I played today and did ok, but I don't know, I just wanted to go sniper or soldier.
Just wait for the demo update, then we'll see all the hipsters hop back on the bandwagon.

Yeah I haven't played much demo in a while, the few times I picked it back up I did alright.
I need to spend more time trying the Dead Ringer on non-PA servers before using it in any serious capacity.
I'm a pretty middling spy anyway and I know that I don't approach the DR in a way that makes it effective. I try to do regular spy stuff with it and it never works out for me. I know I'd be much better off by disguising as my own team and then killing people after they think they've killed me, but I never think of that whenever I switch over to DR. I'm always thinking that spies need to be sneaky and strategic instead of just shooting somebody in the face and running for it.
Nope. Don't do that. Just think about it - when you're doing that, what you have is basically an invisibility watch that requires you to get hit(thus alerting attentive players), only lasts 6 seconds, makes a huge noise when you cancel it, and requires 16 seconds to recharge. Why would you ever want to use an item like that? The DR is a tool for escaping. Just learn to fight without cloak and save the escape for when shit hits the fan.
Idle Bastards server should be updated and connected to Steam now. I was out on vacation and having such a good time I didn't even think to check on it. Sorry...

The Ambassador is stupid broken and stupid and almost as bad as the FaN and anyone who disagrees might as well go backburner pyro because you're probably worthless otherwise. >: (

Tell me more about your glorious art. And yes, I see no reason to ever take the revolver over the ambassador.
I was headshot by a midair spy as I was running around as a scout. And before that, I was headshot twice out of three shots. FlightTest you would be a terrible sniper.

Oddly enough, I find the demo class to be far and away the best for me. Between the regular grenades and the stickies, you have access to 12 fairly quick explosives. With just a couple seconds of forewarning and/or preparation, a single Demoman can singlehandedly break the back of an unaware offensive push. He provides great area denial either by throwing out stickies or forcing people to wait for pipes to explode and shows buildings no mercy.
Pretty much the only class which really irks me as a demo is the scout, but I'm starting to get the hang of tagging them with pipes and making it impossible to avoid all the stickies I throw around. With a bit of cover, a demo can handle pretty much any class using any weapon short of a sniper waaaay far away.
The best part is that they don't even seem to draw a whole lot of attention until they've already unloaded a string of explosives on a target. People tend to ignore them until the demo becomes their personal problem. I know that if I had a headset, I'd yell at people for ignoring the demo cratering my buildings when I'm playing engy. Sure, that soldier way over there might get my sentry before someone runs him off, but an un-harassed demo will kill me and my level 3 sentry, portal exit, and dispenser by the time someone takes notice.

No offense.
Besides the midair headshot, I was playing something like what Zek described as his "combat spy" with the Ambassador and I can tell you its better than the revolver. Getting close enough to actually be able to kill people reliably with the revolver is hella dangerous, and the Ambassador's headshots are wonderous. Also, I'm pretty sure they go through people, as in, I've gotten a double headshot kill with one Ambassador bullet (though this was a patch or two ago).
Really you shouldn't play combat spy because sneaking around and backstabbing everyone is much, much better and more beneficial. Or going medic. With an awesome medic hat.

my very favourite medic moment was on the second to last point on fast lane
above the double shutters to the last point you have the walkway, right, which has a drop either side
and a demo was at the end of the walkway, in the hut that leads to above the last point
so i was at 100% charge and i was going to charge with this pyro into the shutters to take out the sentry and the guys huddled around the dispenser, but he rushes in too soon and this demo nailed him with a couple of grenades, so i run up the stairs, and run along this walkway at him, ubersaw out
all 4 grenades come at me, and i dodge them one by one, like out of the matrix
and at the end of the walkway he's out of grenades so he draws his bottle for an epic melee duel and i crit him in the face
my school is ending soon and i'm gonna be available for scrims again, sorry about the hiatus
also, since i'm a sucker for punishment, i've been toying with the idea of running a tournie, if there's interest
it'd prolly be a 9v9, but no highlander. no class restrictions. i am of the belief that having no class restrictions inspires innovation and creativity. perhaps a 9 heavy team will dominate, or perhaps a well balanced team working together is the key to winning. that's why it's fun to find out!
i've been designing a web based player rating system, so i'd probably implement that for team randomization purposes.

I have discovered the demoman's best use. If your team is locked down by a sniper, switch to demo and he will immediately focus all attention on you, no matter what, allowing your teammates to freely approach him for the kill. This is scienticious fact!

So does that have more to do with horrible spoldies or achievement hunting?
The issue isn't whether some people are good at backburner pyro, its how much the backburner is actually responsible for that and whether that person would be better off with the blaster. People who are good at flanking maneuvers are going to be good pyros regardless of bb or blaster.
I don't think it's too useful to bring in a 'good for the team' argument because its just not well defined. Though it's not as abstract as it was before the ability to extinguish with the blast was put in.
In my experience the blaster is better because it lets me escape from and take advantage of situations that i wouldn't normally be able to. Escaping from a revved up heavy by blowing him back and rounding a corner. Reflecting rockets from a pursuing soldier while I backpedal to escape. Being outnumbered while capping the last point of a 5 cp but blowing everyone back so I can cap it before I die. list goes on and on.
While I typically agree that the compression blast is far more valuable than the Backburner's ability, I still use the Backburner quite a bit. Why? Because of dreaded Pyro/Pyro combat. With the Backburner, I can reliably manoeuvre my way around so I can get a couple of critical hits on the Pyro, which is enough to let me beat an enemy Pyro reliably.

The shot does go through people. It can also go through buildings. I've sniped engineers in the face through their sentry guns a few times.

Huzzah, after a couple of hours on a 2fort server and then an achievement server i finally have the hunstman and jarate so you probably wont see me on your servers playing a terrible sniper anymore. Now i'll stick to terrible medic or pyro.
Two Questions:
Is anyone else disappointed we can't taunt people with our jar of piss?
Since when can pyros put out fires on allies? I haven't played in forever and dont remember that at all.

That is until they air blast you and get free shots off of you while keeping you in front of them. The only time I ever lose to pyros is when I'm outnumbered, and even then we both die more often than not.
