I think that my first rare was something really crappy...like Contract From Below. I think the second pack had a Mana Vault in it...which was the preferred bit at the time.

You know what was the best? (Bear in mind I hopped in on revised, so no power9)

Turn1: Swamp; tap for 1 b; dark ritual for 3 b; dark ritual for 3 b; sengir vampire.

That was the best. Well... maybe not THE best, but it was still awesome to get a turn one vamp. God that Anson Maddock artwork always freaked me out.

That'd be pretty fatal against a large number of decks. <3 black ritual.

The old combo used to be Swamp=>Dark Ritual=>Juzam Djinn. That guy should have been a four-drop, easy.

When I used to play, I was the guy with the Aluren/Recycle/Tangleroot deck. You plop out the Root the turn before (mana acceleration- in a green/red deck? Shocking!), then drop the Aluren only when you have enough mana availible and creatures in hand to pull off Recycle, along with some open red mana. If you're feeling mean, drop a Concordant Crossroads (G, enchantment, all creatures get haste) and follow up the spell barrage with some beatdown. Run four copies of Aluren/Recycle, two Tangleroots, but don't play multiples of recycle or more than two copies of Aluren. I should get this sucker back out now that mana burn's gone the way of the dodo.

You flop creatures like mad, and the mana generated can either cast a creature above a converted cost of 3, or go to fuel some huge red direct damage spell, like Volcanic Wind (4RR, sorcery, deals X damage between target creatures, X is the number of creatures in play- usually my board sweeper if I got this off, I'd have about ten to twelve creatures, and twelve points can make a large hole where your opponent's stuff used to be), or I'd grab Searing Wind (8R, instant, deals 10 damage to target creature or player), or even a good old Banefire (XR, sorcery, deal X damage to target creature or player. If X is greater than 5, Banefire cannot be countered by spells or abilities and it cannot be prevented. Oh, mister counter-happy... you can scoop now.)

Man, I hope this comes back up tonight. I want to customize a G/R deck and go to town like old times.

My money is on tomorrow. I wish that when stuff like this happened they would always throw their Gold subscribers a bone like they did with Undertow, but it's just that, wishful thinking.

Besides, it's not like another day is going to kill anybody.

I was going to buy Sam and Max today but I guess this gives me time to actually play Hit the Road for the first time beforehand.

Another day wont kill anybody? I had most the day off today. I was hoping to have it early and be able to play it. Now Ill have barely any time thanks to work. ANOTHER DAY KILLS DAMMIT.

My friend liked to play Swamp, Dark Ritual, Black Knight, Unholy Strength. That was just when we started out though
4/3 First strike protection from White first turn was really annoying back then when we were all new. In retrospect it's pretty shitty though.

I have no clue what my first rare was. I picked up a starter around, best I can recall, Unlimited or Revised. The only two cards I remember having are Unholy Strength and Rod of Ruin. I /think/ I swiped a friends Shivan Dragon at one point in the limited time I had those cards (before my parental units forced me to get rid of them).

Actually, while I have picked up a starter here and there I don't think I purchased any boosters until recently (Conflux).

I don't know, a 4/3 first strike first turn is still better than nothing. The pro white was an added bonus.
