Is that a 14/12 green creature in one of the screenshots?

yep, and it's next to a 10/10 grizzly bears. they probably both have blanchwood armors

Hmm... digging further it looks as tho they have, I was told by a friend they just gave you 10 songs worth of points.

Yeah, that's how it is. I thought maybe there was a magic way to change the song credits into ms points.

If only..... It honestly wouldn't hurt them tho, since many people would rather buy some of the content that isn't "All you can eat" like videos or xbl games.

Right, but I think that's why it's credits. I know personally I forget to use my credits since it doesn't remind me on album downloads, just a rare individual song purchase. I bet the unredemption rate for song credits is pretty high.

Either way, even if you DID use all the credits, you might not use them on music if they were MS points, since you would get to keep using them if you maintained the subscription, which just about everyone does. They would lose out on it.

It's a green deck, what do you expect? And yah, looks like it is.

I don't know of any 14/12 green creatures. Did they create new cards for these decks?

Maybe the game shows the current power/toughness on the cards themselves during combat. They can do whacky things with technology these days.

Well technically they wouldn't lose because they get your money reguardless and boosting the sales of video thru the service would give them a more lucrative and attractive service to investors and content providers. Either way I think we are derailed enough lol.

Is the game actually successfully downloading yet? I am hoping to try this out a bit after dinner tonight.

So looking forward to this! A moderate amount of customisation at a moderate cost is fine by me. Keeps everyone on a relatively even power base rather than the 'most money spent wins!' culture of full Magic. I know buying the best cards won't compensate entirely for player skill, but it bloody well helps.

magic isn't at all about "most money wins", unless you want to play a vintage tournament and are willing to spend like 30 bucks. standard is reasonable.

It all depends on your definition of "reasonable". I'd say $200-$300 is only possible for a standard deck if you specifically seek out the cheapest reasonably-competitive deck. If you want the best one, $300-$400 is much more common. I know Faeries would cost you $400 easy when I was playing last fall.

That's the cost of a PS3, and that's only to play one deck. In my experience, you'll probably want some variety after playing the same deck for a few months.

That said, I think Magic is absolutely worth the money as long as you don't let it get out of control. There's a reason that it's been around so long. Just don't pretend like it's cheap to play tournament-(even FNM)-level magic.

Hmm, I don't think I explained it right. Basically, I bet they make a huge margin on the song credits overall when combined with the zune pass. Giving you 800 points to buy games would just cannibalize the fact that they could have just made you pay 800 points for the game out of pocket. I bought MTG today, but if I had 800 points from Zune Pass, I would have just used those points, and not redeemed the songs.

Right but some people don't have a 360 or interest in the download games still. Also Microsoft boosting there own sales by offering more options for the subscription service isnt a bad thing, the zune team and xbox teams are in the same division I believe. If anything if this was offered many more people would get a zune pass.

We don't know yet, it's not downloading for anyone.

And some official words from WotC
    Hey guys,

Thanks everyone for their enthusiasm! We've received word from Microsoft that there is an issue affecting all the games that were set to release today, Duels included. The download function is live throught the Mrketplace and the XBLA site, but the game gets stuck at 1%. They are working hard to correct the issue as soon as possible.

We're very excited about Duels launching today, and hopefully you'll all be battling in the Multiverse soon ;-P

I'll post an update when I get one.

I think the worst advice you could give a new player (not saying you're advising it either) is to buy faeries. It may be the best deck, but it's also one of the few in current standard that rewards/penalizes playskill. Playing against a bad faeries player is a joke, and a good one can be almost unwinnable given their draws.

That said, there are a lot of things you can do to combat cost, but it takes work. I'd reccomend a few things
    - start by drafting. This builds your collection, improves your playskill, and will introduce you to other players around you.
    - read a lot. know prices of what you have/want for trading, know how the standard format ticks.
    - invest in cards for a cheap, but competitive deck. Currently this is something like R/B beats, when I started it was U/B mannequin (awesome deck, won many fnms, 80$ investment.)
    - be friendly. I've been playing for two years and met two of my now best friends playing, and I'm 26. Magic draws players of all ages. We also have a group of 5-6 guys that we're friendly with, and once you get here, pooling cards makes any deck very very easy and cheap to build. I don't think any of us buy packs or singles anymore, we just play/trade.

Sorry if this is tangential, but it's irritating when people claim the game I love is just "money wins", which is clearly not the case. I can see how it's a stopping block for some, but it's not too bad on the wallet, and more expensive cards don't directly translate into more wins.

faeries is still fun, and very good. it's still the deck that gives you the most opportunites to outplay the opponent, however lots and lots of faerie hate exists right now in tier 1 decks.

See, now I want to log back in to MTGO, I have most of a faeries deck on there, but it was from when faeries were in the new block. How much will I have to change/buy to get it up to scratch in new t2? If they haven't changed the rotation schedule, it should be good through at least the early fall when a new big set hits, right?

I haven't played Magic since waaaaay back in the 4th edition days when I was a teen, so I figure this game would be perfect for me to re-learn the basics. I only had a starter pack back then, so I'm unaware of what colors do what, and what powerful 2-3 color combos I should look into. Are there any FAQs that go over that aspect of the game? I figure I'll learn the actual gameplay rules in the game itself, but I'd like to get a primer on basic deck building/countering strategies.

Edit: It's cheaper than it used to be. 12 something it looks like. Which doesn't sound that bad in my head, and then I'm like "fucking shit I need four." I might load up mtgo and see what I need and how much that shit will cost me.

However, married, it's a completely different story: the time & money required of serious Magic playing is something that I just don't have access to (well, without risking a failed marriage which is something I don't want).

I think I built the non land core of faeries for about 100ish, which isn't too bad. I think Ravager Affinity was the most expensive deck in t2 in recent memory (recent being relative I suppose). The thing I like about mtgo is the time though. I can find a match at midnight, sitting at home in my underwear watching The Tonight Show. That's always been a big plus to mtgo for me.

Unfortunantly most of the time I would end up in drafts where people just drop after deck building, I pay money to play in the draft not to have no opponent until the 3rd round. It was always so discouraging, maybe I should try putting together some sort of standard deck on there. Any decks along the lines of black trash viable these days?

Rather then trying to comb through every post to see who wanted their gamertag added to the OP, PM me your gamertag if you want to be added to the OP for some online matches.

Gah, I had to look at some Faerie decklists. That's just the kind of deck I'd love to play, but there's no way on earth I'm spending a small fortune putting it together.

I think I have everything but the lands. Non basic lands are always the most fucking expensive things. Especially Mutavault. Fuuuuuck Mutavault.

Edit: It's cheaper than it used to be. 12 something it looks like. Which doesn't sound that bad in my head, and then I'm like "fucking shit I need four." I might load up mtgo and see what I need and how much that shit will cost me.

To be more specific, if I was still single and playing MTGO on a regular basis, I would totally build a variant on this deck.

I'm a MTGO fan as well. You just can't beat the ability to draft whenever you want. Now if they'd just bring back leagues...

wow, leagues have been gone so long i completely forgot about them. leagues were the best, constant playing with very very little investment. I still draft on MODO but I prefer paper

So is there a card list or deck list out with regards to what's included in each preconstructed deck, or is that still hush-hush?

I'll go one better, is there an ETA on when the download will work yet?

That hasn't been an issue in MTGO drafts for a while now because of the depreciation of singles prices (unless things changed after they turned redemption back on, I haven't paid attention since then).

    None so far.

Kinda sad, woke up this afternoon with two hopes playing this game and getting my copies of the PA books in the mail and neither has happened.

Kinda curious, who else is getting this largely because of the free foil Garruk?

I'm not in it for the free card, I just miss playing. Of course we used to play 4-6 player free-for-alls. Lot of fun, never worried about unbalanced cards or crap like that. We eventually stopped playing because one asshole always argued about such and such rule when he would lose. It got so bad I printed up the extended rules from Crystal-Keep. Fucker still argued :x

I'm actually picking it up at the thought of playing MtG online without the card purchase commitment to be as terrible at competition as I was in real life when I was buying the cards and playing in the leagues.

that is about half of why i am getting it, since i already have a loooot of physical cards (and soon a deck that could use garruk)
but also online mtg whenever i feel like it sounds great

Well just picked up some points and came home. Too bad I will have to wait to be able to play. Also I feel bad for the developers. They want their game to succeed and no one can even play it.

So to pass the time , what was the rare in your first booster pack? Terroh Vengeance. Cool white spell card , too bad my first deck was black and green.

Good god I can't even remember that question. Knowing my luck, it was something terrible. I have the worst luck with boosters.

I went to the Mirrodin prerelease back in the day, I got THREE of those terrible chokers. Needless to say I did not do amazing.

I think my favorite deck I ever played in t2 was the Astral Slide deck, that deck was just tricksy enough to be amazing. I also enjoyed cogs (Mirrodin deck based around 1 mana artifacts), faeries, and the Graveborn Muse deck. Oh, and Dragonstorm was a lot of fun when they reprinted it, I forget the set that was. Whenever it was when you stormed for four dragons that dealt five damage upon coming into play. I enjoy cool combos and decks that win through lots of small, tricky advantages.

First rare? Pretty sure it was a Shivan Dragon when I started in 3rd.

I remember that my starter had a Serra Angel, but I think that was uncommon. But my friends were envious anyway.
