Moving Out - Dumpster Regulations

I'm moving out from my apartment this weekend and I was wondering can I get in trouble for what I put in the dumpster. Specifically, is furniture and a mattress a no no?

I couldn't find anyone to buy my stuff and I have no way of transporting it. I don't mind tossing it, but am I going to lose my security deposit if I throw a mattress or other assorted furniture into the dumpster?

There are security cameras covering the dumpsters, unfortunately.

most places I've seen they just sit matresses and such next to the dumpster.

But, I would say the smart thing to do would be ask your complex manager

Put it up on craigslist. "Free mattress", a picture, and the address where it can be found. Someone will take it, trust me.

If the apartment manager has to pay the garbage people extra to haul your stuff away, they will probably take it out of your damage deposit.

Is there no local dump, or is it too hard to get it there? I know that for a small pick-up truck load of crap, it only costs ~$10 to dump, but I live out in the country and it might be a different case for you.

As long as the mattress doesn't visually reek of "ewwwohgodno" the Craigslist idea sounds good.

At my old complex, it was a fine of $500 per piece of furniture left next to or in the dumpster.

Just check with the leasing office.

The most lawful thing to do would be to enlist the help of a friend with a truck to help cart your furniture and so forth to the dump or to goodwill. The Salvation Army (and similar organizations) are happy to take used mattresses and furniture.

Failing that, get a copy of your local yellow pages or a newspaper classified section and look for garbage hauling services. Things like 1-800-GARBAGE are a little more expensive, but you can often find a guy with a truck willing to haul stuff to the dump for fifty bucks.

this. don't know why i didn't think of craigslist in my first post. people climb over each other to get at a "free" ad like it's the last chopper out of saigon.

In some areas, you can call and schedule a trash pickup. They will carry away your large items for you, up to 3 a year around here.

In the apartment building I used to live in you could furnish two aparments with the stuff left in and around the dumpster at the end of the month.

It doesn't have to be your dumpster...

Just ask the property manager. Generally if it's a city building they don't care, but suburban trash pickup is often more strict.

Alternatively, CraigsList is a good choice. Seriously, people will take anything that's free. Item (with picture), Location, Date. Put the location since you won't be living there anymore.
