Corrupt windows xp home profile

RoyceSraphimRoyceSraphim Registered User regular
So once again, I go to work after diddling around on my computer in the morning and come back and it doesn't work.

Same as last time, this started with a disk check and suddenly I have profile problems. Unlike the last time, my msgina file isn't dead, its only my computer giving me the message that,
"Windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted. You may be logged in using a temporary User Profile."

Thing is I still see my wallpaper. I haven't changed my theme since it hasn't updated to service pack 3 yet.

Questions

#1 Should I really create a new profile, copy the important stuff over, and delete this one?

#2 Should I wait for the computer to upgrade to service pack 3 or force it myself

#3 Why do I keep getting all these logon problems?
A rundown of what I did file wise on the computer late last night and this morning:

Installed Steam
Installed HL, HL2, all 3 source bases.
uninstalled oblivion and mods, deleted
Reinstalled oblivion this morning
Uninstalled then reinstalled all Knights of the Nine and dlc content from disk
Download Sid Meier's Railroad's demo on steam
created password for profile

it could be several things. The first that comes to mind is a pile of bad hard disk clusters. Have you done a defrag/disk check lately? If it comes up with bad sectors, buy a new drive. Even if it's able to repair itself, its a symptom of a larger problem with the drive. The fact that a disk check blew it up in the first place tells me it might have repaired some bad sectors and broke your profile.

The other thing is it could just be general Windows weirdness. It seems that after Windows has taken a certain amount of abuse, it just gets unstable and things like this start to happen. I would consider backing everything up, reloading the system and updating to SP3 right away. Often its just faster to do this than try and shore it up.
