With or without a custom firm, you should also look into the official stamina battery, or I think that's what it's called: whatever the extended-power battery is. I've seen them on CAG once in a while; you have to be careful about not buying a knockoff, but between the bigger battery and running games off of the stick, I can go for about 8-10 hours without a problem.

EDIT: I just charged my PSP at work to full, and the indicator says "12:16 remaining," but I've never really trusted these kinds of things with computers.

Thing is, that's going to wind up costing you way more than a bundle would, especially the 4 gig card. 1 GB is plenty for a long time. Worse case scenario, pawn off the stuff from the bundle you don't want, and put that towards something good.

It depends, really; you can get 4GB cards for $20 to $30 and 8GB for as low as $40 if you look around enough. A 1GB is enough for just saves, but if you're looking for digital distro down the road (or you custom-firm for your own UMDs) it's worth it to get the biggest stick you can afford. Even if you bought a bundle and traded in the game, at most you'd get $20 for the game, meaning the 1GB still cost you $20 overall.

Or you could get a PhotoFast adapter and two sandisk 8GB MicroSDHC cards for around $50 on Amazon. :D Sure, they'll report as Magic Gate Unknown, but I've yet to have any issues with them. The analog stick was off on my refurb though, and I pretty much need CFW to deal with that (joysens plugin).

Now if you'll excuse me, supposedly there's a version of DOSBOX for this thing and I would love to have my Buck Rogers games (or any SSI games really) on the go.

Without CFW you have a "portable" system with bad loading times, bulky media and very limited battery life. I wouldn't recommend a PSP to anyone without it unless they were okay with never taking it outside.

Mine lasts for at least three-five hours, which is good enough for me.

thought I'd post here instead of starting yet another psp topic.

My wife is looking to buy me a PSP for our anniversary coming up, and I'm having a really hard time deciding if I want the 2000 or the 3000 as well.

Basically, what I want to use it for is an mp3 player, a movie player and to play my old PS1 games (Street fighter alpha 3, ff tactics, ff7, xenogears, etc) Which I should still have the original versions of.

I heard the 3000 has a better screen, but that custom firmware is not working well on it yet. I saw the 2000 on the dell site for 120 and was all over that, but I don't think they'll ship it to canada unfortunately (it's not on the .ca dell site). So if the 2000 and 3000 are both 169 I'm having a hard time deciding.

How bad is the ghosting on the 2000? Is the screen difference enough to notice? I already have a DSlite, in comparison, how are the screens between the DSlite, PSP2000 and 3000?

The screen on the 2000 is very nice, I have never been able to detect any ghosting on it. If you're happy with the DS Lite's screen you'll be delighted with the 2000's, both are great at what they do.

And yeah you'll want real persistent CFW for Popsloader.

The CFW feature is a sticking point for me. But if the screen isn't really bad on the 2000 then that solves it for me, more or less.

I was so crestfallen when there was a blip of an image of VC during a PSP footage montage at last year's E3 (or was it GDC?) and it turned out to be a mistake. :(

I think that custom-firming on the 3000 will be coming soon, but as mentioned above, right now it's not fully functional. A 2000 will always be an option, though. I don't have any complaints about the 2000's screen, though I haven't seen a 3000 in person to compare. I've never really been sensitive to ghosting, so I don't think I'm a good judge of that kind of thing.

Well the only thing the 3000 has over the 2000 is a microphone really and who cares about that :P

Seriously do not believe the internet bs about PSP screen ghosting, it was never that bad with the 1000 in the first place and was eliminated (IMO) with the 2000. Although I haven't seen it for myself I bet the internet outrage over the 3000's screen with the scanlines is wildly exaggerated to the point of idiocy too.

This video does a pretty good job showing the difference in the colors between the psp-2000 and psp-3000. On its own the psp-2000 looks great, but if you compare it side by side, it looks washed out. I only have a 2000 and I've never thought to myself this screen sucks. (Quite the contrary, especially if you have just been using a DS)
Also those Dell psp-2000s were confirmed to be the newer ones where CFW doesn't work.

Once CFW has been reported to work well on the 3000. (runs off the flash, doesn't require reloading) I'll be upgrading, though I'll probably wait to see if there are any deals since my psp-2000 does work ok. (Its just kind of beat. I dropped it in water and have had to open it a few times so there is dust behind the glass.)

I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Yeah... I think at this point I'd just get a 3000 and suffer UMDs but make sure to NOT UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE. Unlike the pandora battery method where it doesn't matter, the psp-3000 relies on an exploit that is most likely patched in the newest firmware Sony just released like a week ago. Just suffer with UMDs for now. Its too much of a crap shoot when it comes to buying psp-2000s most of the big online retailers only have the newer ones.

Is there a way to find out before buying what version of the 2000 retailers are selling?

I heard there's a way to put CFW on the 3000 if you have v 5.03 on there, but if you have 5.50 you're out of luck. Is there any way to know what version yours has before buying?

I swear, it's like sony doesn't want me to buy a psp.

The current PSP 3000 hack isn't real custom firmware, it's not permanent and flashed to the PSP so you have to perform the hack everytime you turn it on. It also means you can't use plugins (to my knowledge anyway, you need to configure those on boot then restart the PSP to enable them which means the CFW needs to permanent which it isn't on the 3000) so no Popsloader (the plugin that enables you to play ripped PS1 games).

If you have a TA-088v3 board in there, forget about it. You won't be flashing that unless you want a brick. You'll have to make do with the stuff that needs to be reapplied after every hard shutdown.

True, you don't need it. Just as long as you acknowledge that you're willingly accepting increased loading times and lower battery life. ;-)

Well, with games regularly popping onto PSN and Sony looking at a good will program to let you digitally download games you bought on UMD, you should be able to get this legally soon.

I played Persona 1 and Innocent Sin completely on my PSP, and a large portion of Eternal Punishment on it as well.

The only problem I ran in to on Eternal Punishment was having to rip my copy a second time because my old DVD drive was dying. When I bought a new one the rip went great and I didn't have any problems. I did have to use the Innocent Sin Game ID to prevent it from lock ups.

Actually I think EP locked up three times altogether, during the 55ish hours I played. I save a lot anyway so it wasn't a problem.
