I want another DQ like IV as well. Great story with awesome characters.
Uhhh... what? I must be playing a different version of DQIV than you, because while the character designs are good, the story and character development is terrible. "A chosen child will rise and save the world. We must find him before the bad guy does!". Each character has zero motivation to actually find said child, they all just decide to go looking for him on a whim.
I have yet to play a DQ game that had a story that compelled me to want to play. DQVII's story entertained me the most, but that game was more like a bunch of short stories combined into a whole. Each individual part was interesting, but after playing for over 30 hours, nothing tied it together and I became apathetic.
I'm interested in DQIX. While it's an awesome feature, being able to create an entire party leaves me with the feeling that I'll be creating a party of soulless characters with no personality, backstory, motivation or development. I'm hoping that I'm wrong, because DQ always manages to charm me with it's style into playing, but I rarely finish them.
According to Kotaku DQIX is going to be harder than any other Dragon Quest game because of the fact that players can look at online guides for info. Makes me wonder if they are going to somehow design the game so that it is harder to utilize online info.

Randomly generated loot and dungeons? Holy shit I think I just peed a little.

I never said that they were using randomly generated dungeons. However, there are a lot of Dragon Quest spin-offs that do utilize random content.

My reading comprehension isn't that bad :P
I was making an inference that the only way I can think of them making the game more difficult for those who typically use online guides is to make stuff randomly generated.
The female warrior looks silly in comparison to the male counterpart (especially considering the class is supposed to be the one with best protection), but isn't this a moot point if the armor you choose changes the appearance of your character?
I wonder if the armor looks very different depending on the character's gender? Maybe "full plate mail" looks like, you know, full plate mail on a male, and full plate metal bikini on female. Or maybe you can equip the actual armor only on males, and females get bunny suits.
Wizardry 8 had an interesting style for character creation. You'd make your own party, and get to choose "personality" (i.e. voice set) for each character. Each personality had unique dialogue for common events, like taking damage, casting spells etc. as well as some plot events. I really did feel like my characters had strong personalities, even when I had created them myself. Only the JRPG style melodrama was missing. It worked very well.

I agree, it's pretty stupid, but the female warrior has always been "chain mail bikini" like.

It's actually worse than the one now.
I wonder what she's hiding under that flap
Trust me, if you've seen some of the H doujinshi i've seen, then you DON'T want to ask that question.

I don't know what that means, but I'll humbly retract my question.
Out of curiosity, when you create your 4 chumps in the beginning, are they your main party throughout the game, or is it like DQIII where you can create a bunch of different characters and swap/level as needed? More simply, is this like Final Fantasy III or Dragon Quest III?
It looks like it's not exactly DQ III because it doesn't seem like you start with Hero unlocked. I'm willing to bet that you can make a whole crap load of party members.

The Dragon Quest III remakes did have a sort of personality system added in. Based off what stats you distributed at character creation (and for the Hero, a personality quiz) your character got a personality that determined stats at levelup*.
I don't know if DQIX, which is the successor to DQIII, will have it though. But it would be cool if personality did exist and it added some changing dialog options.
The personalities were generally balanced, but there was one specific personality that's considered the best.
"Sexy" A female only personality. As such, for munchkins, the best party is a party of sexy girls. :P
Horii must have been playing some sort of joke with that.

One thing that leads a bit in the other direction is that all party members retain their skills when they switch classes, which I don't believe was the case with DQIII. It would be nice to have the option to switch to a new class without having to drop a current character to level 1.
I really hope they don't go all DQVII and make party members who were valuable goddamn members of my party leave due to story reasons. This heavily influences my desire for non-story-related player characters.
Nope, all party members kept all skills in DQ III. That's why some rotation of Sage/Fighter/Warrior is best.
I remember spending so much time grinding in the other world so that all my guys could have all the spells and ridiculous stats. Good times...I guess.
In the new versions, you go Merchant, Goof Off, Sage, Thief, alternating slightly, depending. Having a Merchant with all Sage skills is almost as good as a Fighter with all Sage skills AND allows you to get free money from monsters AND lets you summon an inn / store at any time. Having a thief as the final job let you steal items and gets you insane agi, which the battle engine wasn't really balanced around.
I thought that even if you played the game solo, you still got a full team of characters (4)? But now i'm hearing that you NEED multiplayer in order to have more than just your hero. What's up?

I believe I heard it on Kotaku.
And yes, I want one of those DSi covers too, I had a DQV one for my DSLite, but it wore out eventually. I don't acually have a DSi yet, but i'm saving up money for it (50 dollars and i'm ready), plus I don't know what colors to get yet.
Wow that's sweet... too bad I still see no reason to drop the cash on swapping to the DSi from my Lite. Not to derail the thread, but I'm surprised that no one has made a really good Pokedex skin for the DSi yet, it just seems obvious to me.
This game is definitely a day one purchase for me... any word on how good the plot is yet?

Maybe, but one of them is an airbender/kyoshi warrior.

Nomura as in Tetsuya 'BELTANZIPPERS' Nomura?

Isn't there some obscene number of quests in addition to the possibility of downloadable/unlockable quests in the future?
I lol'd. :^:

Eugh. It looks like a slime version of Kano from Mortal Kombat.
