I've heard two Massive Attack songs that are pretty rad: Teardrop as used in the House, M.D. opening and Dissolved Girl as used in a trailer for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I checked out the full versions of these songs and they're pretty cool, but I prefer them without vocals.
So if anyone can point me towards more stuff like that, basically a similar kind of sound but without vocals, that would be pretty cool. I'm not totally opposed to vocals, it's just that I find instrumental stuff to be better thinkin' music and this dark kind of moody stuff gives me good ideas for stuff to model and animate.
Oh, and it's cool if it's more Massive Attack too. I've only heard those two songs by them.
Can't help a ton with the non-vocal stuff, but Massive Attack is pretty fantastic. Keep in mind the two songs you listed have female guest vocals, their two vocal people are actually male and super mellow.
Once you start demanding no vocals you move into random electronic territory where artists are less pinned to what they create since DJs tend to remix their shit a billion times and you never know who really made the track and on top of that DJs are the ones with the albums, not producers.
Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I-IV
cEvin Key and Ken "Hiwatt" Marshall - The Dragon Experience
Coil - ....And the Ambulance Died in His Arms
Graeme Revell - The Crow Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
That, I think is a good start for dark, moody, mostly instrumental stuff. There's similar stuff in my collection that heads more towards noise and glitch music. The Coil album is live, but pretty good.
Portished, Morcheeba, Zero 7. Tricky was part of Massive Attack before he split off solo, His Maxinquaye and Pre-Millenium Tension albums are both good downtempo/triphop albums. Massive Attack's Mezzanine and Blue Lines albums are their best, also.
If you want pretty purely instrumental stuff, Boards of Canada and Autechre are pretty vocal free. A little more on the experimental side. If you want really minimalist instrumental, see if you can find anything by Plastikman.
Portishead (roads, its a fire, wandering stars), tricky(How high, aftermath), morcheeba, sneaker pimps, ruby (paraffin) are kinda similar, but not too many instrumental.
Fun genre to draw to though. Its generally all very dark sounding.
I'm good for NIN, got the whole discography. Ghosts is great thinking music, but I'm much more fond of the instrumentals off The Fragile (especially Just Like You Imagined) 'cause there's just a lot more going on. Some of the Ghosts stuff is a little too sparse.
I'm liking the rest of this Massive Attack stuff. I think I'll check out some more.
Portishead's a little different... I think I'll have to listen to a few more tracks before I decide.
Liking Boards of Canada quite a bit.
Thanks for the recommendations. I'll keep going through the list, and if you think of any more I'll definitely check them out.
You want Made Into Itself by Leaf. I think it's tied with Massive Attack's Mezzanine as my favorite Trip Hop album. If you want to try some songs before you check it out, try Paperdress or Song of Trees off Made Into Itself.
Edit: Since it wasn't explicitly mentioned earlier in the thread, both of those songs you mentioned were both off of the album Mezzanine, and is as I said is considered pretty much the definitive trip hop album.
Just a side note but Tricky was the original singer for Massive Attack, as I recall (I'm almost positive on that - I know for sure he at least did some guest songs with them). So odds are if you like MA you'll like him.
I actually got hold of the entire Massive attack discography, and totally love it. Hybrid's "Wider Angle" album is also amazing and praised by reviewers, but you might find it difficult to find.
I'd suggest Massive attack's "Unleashed" album, it's all [err, all but one] instrumental and all pretty good.

Along the same trip-hop vibe Tricky has a pretty cool voice but his stuff is much more hit-or-miss.

Definitely some quality stuff. For more trip hop stuff I'd suggest Morcheeba and Portishead, though none of them do instrumental type stuff.

Do... Re... Mi... So... Fa.... Do... Re.... Do...
Forget it...

Good enough to be worth checking out anyway.
