Option 1 is just Going Rogue, you need to have CoX already in order to run it. This is available digital-only, and you can pre-order it. For your trouble, you'll get access to dual pistols and demon summoning early, but you will not get a free month of game time. It is $30.
Option 2 is the boxed copy, it is the entire game, CoX and GR bundled together. You CANNOT preorder this one, you'll have to drive to the store and pick it up on launch day. For your trouble you'll get special costume pieces and auras and a Shadowy Presence stealth power along with a free month of game time. This is $40.
If you want the pre-order goodies but also want the costume bits and the power, you'll be able to buy a booster pack after GR launches for an unknown price. But you still won't get the free game time.
EDIT: If this is confusing you because it sounds like they're just trying really, really hard to bone their existing subscriber base out of that free month of game time then you aren't confused at all, in fact you understand this perfectly.
I'd be more bitter if every other developer didn't do the exact same thing. :?
WoW's expansions don't come with free time, EQ2's only give you time if you're a new subscriber...
Incredibly. PUG groups used to not recruit masterminds sometimes due to the long setup times.
They weren't the pariahs Stalkers were, but you'd always end up looking at the watch and wondering if they're done setting up or if you have time to go make a sandwich.
I always remember masterminds being avoided because they caused the OMG LAG. Not the tedious set up times. I mean even before AoE upgrades it wasn't nearly as bad as it was after CoV launch when the second upgrade had like a 4 minute recharge or something ridiculous and you could only apply it to one pet.
Also *waves* new person finally decided to stop having Robziel post crap for me.
OH god, you showed up ummm... I need to go clean some posts...
I guess I'm just a weirdo because every time I ran a redside time I made damn sure to include MM's because of their awesome factor. Of course I kicked a few people who cried "lag" because they where giant pussies.

It kind of sucked being the only MM on a team before AoE upgrades. You'd get in and watch helplessly as the brutes and corrupters smashed every enemy nearby then charged off into the map. By the time you had your crap all summoned and upgraded they'd be halfway done with the mission leaving you scrambling behind them to catch up and hopefully contribute. Then your damned pets would get stuck on a crate or something.
And god help you if you where a MM who was Lackeyed up...
That whole "Need to cast your AOE's as many times as you have minions" thing is what actually caused me to never play Redside.
Having so little experience doing Villainy, I didn't realize that I needed to cast it multiple times and so my bots would always get destroyed, which lead to me focusing more on the Laser Blaster/Dark powers, which led to me being woefully underpowered, which led to me not getting accepted to many teams, which led to me being way out-leveled by all you dudes, which led me to not play Redside as much.
Vicious Circle.
Also, yes. That was the confusing part. For a company that seemed so gung ho in giving me yet another free month of time every time I did any sort of purchase for the game, I couldn't understand why it seemed so necessary to make sure I don't get it this time.
Than I realized it's possible I haven't paid them anything since January of 09, so maybe it makes a bit of sense.

The AoEs? You only need to recast it if things die, otherwise it's once and you're done. I have no idea what you're saying.
There was a frame rate issue with MM's that bothered some people. I remember getting some complaints with some of the fire shields that my thermal Corrupter had about frame rates too.

Someone cornered babs about that and it was apparently the sound effects from the thermal shields that were causing the lag.
I guess I was just lucky playing a Necro MM, I could have all my stuff out summoned and as buffed as I wanted them to be while every other MM was still summoning.

Have I done this rant before?
The sound-related aspects of CoX are, apparently, one huge pile of crap. When the engine was being developed, Cryptic had nobody with any experience designing/writing anything sound-related. The result was something that sort of kind of just works. But on a lot of hardware - even modern stuff - it can cause big problems.
If you ever think you're getting crappy performance on a system that's way over-specced for the game, go turn all your volume sliders (or at least the sound effects slider) to 0%. Your performance will improve dramatically.
The fire shields are/were hell on ATi cards, too, but Cryptic's (and now Paragon's) failure/refusal to include support for them has always been sort of baffling.

Except that Paragon is addressing it. The updates coming with i17 and Ultra mode include more then a few fixes/updates for supporting ATI cards. The demo they did at Herocon was apparently on a machine with two ATI cards.
But yeah I got the idea that Cryptic did a lot of things half arsed. I know when I asked Positron why we never see them spawn the mothership for test events and he said, point blank, it doesn't work, never really did, it was a hack to make it work.

With the release of April's Issue 17: Dark Mirror, the newest free update of City of Heroes®, the game you love now has the visual depth, contrast, and richness it deserves! Dark Mirror includes a superior graphics rendering process, dubbed "Ultra Mode," that gives City of Heroes a heightened level of detail in lighting, reflections, shadows, and water effects. Paragon City™ and the Rogue Isles™ have never looked better.
In addition to Ultra Mode, as part of Issue 17, you will confront a new and nefarious foe who will be able to match your character blow for blow.
Other Issue 17: Dark Mirror features include:
* Epic archetypes are now unlocked at level 20.
* Animated character tails.
* New missions, new badges, and new player emotes.
* Quality of life enhancements to the UI and game systems.
* Improvements and additions to Mission Architect.
Features
Ultra Mode
Ultra Mode includes a superior graphics rendering process for players who have higher-end graphic cards. Each feature can be enabled or disabled in the graphics menu options and will be scalable. Ultra Mode works on both Macs and PCs. In specific, it offers dynamic shadows, screen-space ambient occlusion, and dynamic environment reflections (including planar reflections and environment mapping of reflective surfaces).
Epic Archetypes Unlocked at Level 20
Previously, you had to have at least one character at level 50 to make an epic archetype character. No more! Now you can create an epic archetype character as long as you have any one character at level 20 or higher.
Animated Tails
No more tails lying about like dead weight! You will now be able to select tail body parts that will react to your movement and have a swaying or swishing idle animation mode. You will need to go to a tailor to upgrade to the animated version.

New Story Arcs: Issue 17: Dark Mirror features two new Hero and two new Villain story arcs for levels 20-30. Each of these story arcs has four missions, and the story arcs highlight the Dark Mirror's sinister new enemy. Acquire first Hero story arc in Talos Island, and the first Villain arc in Sharkhead Isle.
Silver Mantis Strike Force Update: The Silver Mantis Strike Force will now be available to all Villains, not just supergroups. You now can access the Silver Mantis Strike Force via Silver Mantis, located in Sharkhead Isle. You can also run this Task Force from your supergroup computer.
Positron Task Force Update: This Task Force has been split into two halves and dramatically upgraded and updated to ramp up the fun. The final battle of the Task Force takes place in the Faultline Dam and incorporates the new Dark Mirror enemy.
New Badges: Along with adding badges for 500 Badges Earned, 750 Badges Earned, and 1,000 Badges Earned, we are adding new exploration badges to city zones, almost doubling the number of exploration badges. You can learn new Accolades for finding all of the exploration badges in each city zone.
New Player Emotes: We'll let you know more about the new emotes soon.
Quality of Life Improvements
Craftable Temporary Powers: You will now have a much cleaner and more consistent way of finding and crafting temporary powers.
Increased Mission Count: You can now have seven active missions (previously three).
Show Last Objective: This UI improvement lets you find your last objective on a mission map, making it easier to find something you've missed.
Auction House: The UI gives you new options for sorting search results, your Auction House inventory is now separated by clearly marked tabs based on the item's status, the Auction House text entry box now autocompletes, and a single click on a recipe displays all salvage needed for that recipe.
In-Game E-mail: You can now use in-game e-mails to send Influence/Infamy to your own characters or to other players' characters via in-game e-mails. (You still cannot send Influence, Infamy, or items from a Hero to a Villain or vice versa.)
Mission Architect Improvements
Experience: You can now handpick the powers for custom enemies and still receive experience for them (within game balance limits).
New Maps: We have added approximately 20 new unique maps.
Giant Monsters: You can now add giant monsters to some outdoor maps.
Exit Mission on Complete: You can now specify that players have to leave the mission manually on completion.
Escort Missions: "Lead to place" technology allows you more control over escort objectives.

Really? They put it into two halves? Couldn't they just have cut it in half and been done with it? Can you remember your favorite part of a PosiTF you'd miss if they cut it out?
So is anyone in the beta? Does Dual Pistols have anything new beyond Weak Attack/Strong Attack/Snipe/Nuke/something useless?
its in Open Beta now. Looks like it has a mechanic where you can change damage type around. Some posts saying it is underpowered, and kind of slow.
I've heard the cries of under powered but honestly I wonder what they're comparing it to. Compare to the fail that in AR, Dual Pistols is complete and utter win.
Its a fun set, you can change your ammo/damage type, lethal(-def), Incendiary(fire dot), cryo (slow), chemical (-dmg).
It doesn't feel slow to me, but again I'm not use to a blaster that isn't full of complete and utter suck. I've tried DP/MM and DP/Nrg both solo well, I was doing x5 +1 without much trouble. Full DP teams can also plow through things, especially if you have corrs.
But I'm not a numbers person, it feels -fun- which i guess counts more to me.

Setting aside the people who started 3 weeks ago, this is shameful.
I have one 50 redside, which is a very fun SS/Will brute.
Blueside, I've had a few contenders for pushing all the way to 50, but each one has been nerfed to shit and I lost interest in them because of it. I mean, I'm sure they're all viable, but the nerfs sapped my motivation. I have one tank (Fire/Fire), one scrapper (spines/regen), and two controllers (ill/kin and fire/storm) sitting in this category.
