As the title says, I'm moving to Omaha in the near future. Unfortunately, not much is nailed down yet. So, I decided to come here to get suggestions and helpful advice.
I was wondering if anyone here had any ideas on where good places to live in the city are. It will be me and my girl, we are looking for a one bedroom most likely, but a 2 bed is acceptable if in the price range. We're looking for a place that is ~600-700 per month base rent.
I'm also looking for good Omaha food stuffs, so if anyone knows any good local food places to check out, it would be greatly appreciated too!
1. Food places there's a shitload of really good places. That's one thing we do have a lot of give me more specifics and price range and I can recommend some.
2. Living area, do not live north of Dodge St. The rent is really cheap north of Dodge and there's a reason why. Papillion Ralston and La Vista are really nice areas all over close interstate access. I live in a "working class" area in La vista have a 2 bed room house and pay 525 a month.
I lived north of Dodge but it was far-ish out west (apt at 144th and Maple, then a house at 108th and Fort) but yeah, east of 72nd and north of Dodge can be sketchy. Whereabouts are you looking for apartments? It's a big city.
Well, the girlfriend is going to Creighton for pharm school, and I'm still looking for a job. We're looking at places around 72nd and Dodge. Currently under consideration are a couple places owned by the Broadmoor Renting group, and they look ok.
I would be stunned if you were paying $600 a month for a one-bedroom in Omaha.
Unless it was a really fantastically fucking big bedroom. Like, "the size of my aparment" big. And came with a Hot Chicks Room.
I paid $625 for my one bedroom... but it was enormous. I needed twice the furniture I owned to fill the place, plus it came with a garage spot and had a pool and racquetball courts and stuff.
To the OP, I'd be sure to visit the neighborhoods you're looking at and not renting a place sight-unseen. That area is pretty hit-or-miss but I wouldn't suggest living any farther west or your girlfriend's commute is going to suck. Though I suppose if you lived close enough to the interstate it would be tolerable. Better than my 20 miles through the Los Angeles interstate system, at least.
Creighton is cool just the area around it not so much. I'd suggest looking further out west on Dodge. Honestly don't limit yourself to any are just based on how close the commute is. I live quite a distance from creighton but can still drive it in under 15 minutes on the interstate.
Hmmm... interesting, how much further out on Dodge would you suggest? Past 680? Just trying to get a bearing on where we're talking about here. Any recommendations on rental groups or anything like that?
As for food and stuff, just looking for maybe some good Chinese, Thai, Italian, or other such places.
Theres an partment place on 192nd and maple or another on 108th and maple that arent too bad.
I enjoy Huhot mongolian, (180th and w. center)
Sam and louies, Don carmellos, or godfathers are near there too if you like pizza/Italian.
Theres always The sushi/japanese places on 144th (tokyo kitchen i think)
Village pointe has several places to eat, I dislike cheeseburger in paridaise
Kona grill will give you 1/2 sushi on tues or thurs around 7 (i cant remember if its before or after)
I havent been to tony romas, but i hear it is a place for ribs
MiMi's is good if you like a "home cooked meal" style place. and they give you a lot o food.
Legacy on 168th and center has a lot of places too,
Like fuddruckers and quiznos (the torpedoes are a rip off at 4$)
you can get anything you want if you live between 180th and 144th. I rarely need to go past there unless i am going to class.
180th is near a target, walmart, lowes, hyvee, several gas stations and something like 15 banks.
If you're downtown and looking for Chinese food, 16th and ... next to Douglas is Farnam, right? ... ignore the Panda House on the corner and hit King Fong. Awesome place with good food. Tell em Michael Spencer sent you -- they recognize me by voice. :-) It's a different kind of Chinese food than most Chinese fast food, and it costs a bit more. Very good though.
I live across the river in Council Bluffs so I don't know much about apartments in Omaha. (I'm about 10 minutes by Interstate from downtown Omaha, and about 25 minutes from UNO. Still have 3 semesters left on my MS in Comp Sci.)

DO NOT MOVE INTO THE RORICK APARTMENTS. Yeah, they advertise them as condos. They are not. Do not live within 5 blocks of the intersection of 24th and Leavenworth.
Yeah, I know I'm probably not being a good ad for Omaha there, but that intersection in particular is where dreams go to die.
I currently live near 40th and Dodge, just north of it. Looking to move back to South Omaha myself.
The only thing about 72nd and Dodge is the Crossroads is up for sale now, but there's a crapton of stores right there. A huge Target, the God-of-all-Stores that is Nebraska Furniture Mart (who sell much much more than furniture), there's also a new Wal Mart not far from there. You also have the bus system sending most of their busses through that area.
The downside to La Vista and other cities around Omaha is if your car breaks down or something, you basically have zero public transportation. If you live out there you need a working car. They are pretty nice though. Also living in La Vista still qualifies you for a free library card to the Omaha Public Library.
We have all the major food chains and whatnot, so if you have it where you live it's more than likely here, although the really good places are the family restaurants in North and South Omaha.
Also get used to hearing people use the terms North Omaha, South Omaha, and West Omaha.
I lived in Lincoln for 5 years but my roommate was from Papillion. The zoo rocks, she volunteered there so we got in for free whenever we wanted to go and had a lot of fun.
Old city along the river also has a lot of neat little places with in-house breweries and such.
Yeah you shouldn't have any problems getting a really nice two bedroom or a huge one bedroom for 600-700 dollars. I miss living in the midwest... my last apartment in lincoln was 400 a month for a two bedroom place including electricity and water, off street parking and a deck.

As a rule, the colleges in Omaha are in the shitty parts of town, Creighton, UNO, UNMC, God forbid Metro CC (my Army unit is there, I do not venture outside the gates without a uniform on.) You didn't mention why you're moving to Omaha, but since it's specific I assume it's either for a job or school. Omaha is no one's dream town.
If you have some leeway, I would suggest looking at Bellevue as well. It's about 50,000, 10-15 miles from Omaha, and has an Air Force base.
Not really. Omaha has pockets of 'bad' areas, there isn't really defined areas. A bad area can just be one street on one side of a block.
The Fort Crook Metro campus is in a not-so-well off area but it's silly to be alone at night in any city. The South Omaha Metro campus is just fine.
As I said before the only truly shitty part of the city is the general area of 24th and Leavenworth, where dreams go to die.
If you're going to live in the cities that border Omaha, Bellevue would be my last choice. Even worse bus service than the other ones, Offutt doesn't really doesn't affect the area much (except that families are comign and going all the time), its library system is horrible.
If you are choosing Burbs of Omaha, I'd rank my choices as such
1) Ralston. For all intents and purposes you are still living in Omaha without actually being in the city limits.
2) La Vista. They generally have their shit together.
3) Papillion. They also seem to generally have their shit together but you really really REALLY need a car out there.
4) Council Bluffs. Not my top choice but I'd still move there over Bellevue. Even though it is Counciltucky. You need a car because for some reason we only have one bridge pedestrians can legally use to get over the river, so you have to take one of the highway bridges or the SOB to get to it.
5) Bellevue. aka "we would be Omaha except Omaha can't annex out of county lines so we are just kinda here. sup."
"dream cities" are a matter of opinion. I've been to about 5 other 'big' cities and I still prefer Omaha over all of them. we are the only state that had it's unemployment rate drop in recent months.
Oh, and I remember the names of the restaurants. For North O you want to check out Bill's BBQ on 4414 N 24th St. For South Omaha I'd check out Guaca Maya.
Eating is good in the Old Market but 99% of them are sit down restaurants.
Basically just say west Omaha to any Realtor and they'll know what you're looking at. Basically anything west of 90th.
Food wise Hu-Hot is really fucking good as is PF Changs. Cheeseburger in paradise was nice when it opened but it's run downhill ever since. You're moving to Omaha so you'd be doing yourself a disservice but not both going to the Zoo and eating at a good steakhouse also be sure to at least visit the old market downtown.
MCC if your interested has other campuses you can take classes at on the cheap (Just stay away from the Fort Campus). LOTS of people do basics at MCC then transfer to somewhere else if your interested in school.
Now that you mention it, I don't remember ever seeing a lot of buses in Omaha. There are NO buses when I grew up, and when I think of a city mass transportation never comes into my mind. When I got the student bus pass at college I remember thinking "what the fuck is this for."
