Does someone want to run PA MTGO Clan West? Dibs on New Hampshire Darkmagics being East. When the clan gets approved, I'll split the lists in half and keep dividing people as they join through friday. Just need someone to head the second clan.
What is involved with starting a West coast Clan? I have no problem starting one up, since I am on the West coast.
It's not REALLY west coast. It's just called that for league conference purposes. Like the NFL and the AFL.
You just have to go to Menu > Community > Clans and there should be a button to request a clan. Just need someone to start it and head it. Should be fairly active for inviting people.
So, I played this from the 4th Edition up to Mirage waaay back. I've played Duels of The Planeswalkers on and off for much longer though. I saw the thread and I it piqued my interest, so I have a few questions.
1. If I start playing now, will it take a long time for me to catch up with the current rules, rule sets, new expansions as well as deck-building trends?
2. How much money will I have to sink into this to be competitive and have a reasonable array of possibilities in deck-building?
3. Is it still possible to get the digital cards printed and sent to you?

1) Not long. We have some vets here who can get you up to speed, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.
2) Are you talking about league or constructed play. A good constructed deck you could maybe look at about 100ish for type 2 or block right now.
I think I'm gonna get in on this if there's still room, I haven't been able to make FNM recently because of work and this sound awesome in lieu of that. I think I'm gonna follow metaghost's lead and play a sealed tourney tonight.
Edit: Oh, my mtgo name is Lupine_Dragon if anyone wants to add me or whatever.

Yeah, to people who haven't opened their packs and are concerned about keeping things organized, joining a Sealed event is helpful, albeit extremely time-consuming.
There are Sealed Swiss events though, which are less time-consuming and more frequent.
Either way, all cards that you open in any event are saved in a folder within your Decks main folder. Just go to "Tournament Decks" and it'll list, by date, every limited format deck you ever did put together.
From that, one should be able to add the weekly pack with some ease.

Also: For any old-timers who haven't played in a while (esp. prior to sixth editions), welcome back. There's an unbelievably helpful player-generated FAQ called "Rules Primer for Returning Players" over on the WotC boards (now called Gleemax. Don't ask...)
all I can say is.........I wish I had gotten more removal
I strongly agree with this statement.

I always flirted with the idea of playing MTGO, but never could quite bite. The thought of having to start from scratch, recollecting and rebuying cards I already own is somewhat discouraging. This idea of a PA league is very tempting, though....
Oh, yeah, sorry to all that I keep confusing with lingo.
In this case, an archetype is basically what an archetype always is, that being something typical of a certain style (of a given thing), in this case deck styles. Shards of Alara block is inherently broken up into 5 3-color Shard archetypes based on certain themes generally revolving around the central color of that particular 3-color arc on the Magic color-wheel. These shard-types also happen to loosely fall in line with more traditional notions of MTG archetype: Burn, Weenie, Control, Ramp, and so forth.
Grixis, being the Black-centered shard, is chiefly concerned with killing things and resurrecting. However, its main mechanic, Unearth, is a fairly undeveloped take on Flashback (from Odyssey block) but only on creatures, wherein you can resurrect your dudes for low cost, but then they disappear at the end of turn.
The problem is that they tried to push a mill strategy (see: Memory Erosion, Extractor Demon, Lich-Lord of Unx, Font of Mythos) but failed to make it especially strong, and then you're left with lots of things that are overly expensive to balance their cheap Unearth costs. That said, Cruel Ultimatum was the titular card in a lot of tourney winning decks (5CC Cruel Control).
man, this thread made me kinda think about getting back into MTGO (which I haven't played since 7th edition i believe) until I spent the last 2 days trying to get the bloody client to update only to have it d/l two thousand and some out of 3490 files and crash..EVERY TIME. only to start from scratch again since they apparently didn't think a resume function would be a good thing..to crash at the exact same spot again
Just set up an account and joined up as NullTerminator.
Haven't played the game at all for a few years and never did sealed stuff so this should be an interesting experience. The same way that bending over without lube is interesting.

That happened to me too when I first tried to install. I'm not sure if there's any real solution. It just works...sometimes.
I'm trying to get into this, although trying to register through the client has resulted in me having to call tech support tomorrow. Somehow, even though they were able to charge my credit card, it failed on authorization during the last step?
Your guess is as good as mine. I'll call tomorrow.
My handle should be MisoRonery if they didn't completely bone this. I'm in for the tournament, even though my experience with the game is minimal. Just another punching bag for the elite, but it sounds like a blast to me.

I miss the old client that looked like shit but actually worked :?
Decided to open my PA League packs in a ALA Block Sealed.
this is the best idea I've seen so far for tracking your deck lists. In fact, I think I may join up now, having not realized how this would work very well, and not feel like I'm wasting limited packs.
If anyone want's some deck advice, or test help in the interim, add me: scullykel999.

So, I couldn't resist booting up MTGO again. Like a few others from earlier I haven't played in years, so this should be quite interesting. Feel free to add me to the league list, hopefully we'll get a second clan up and running that I'll be able to join.
Yes, Anything Goes is OURS...ALL OURS!!! MWUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
So, my deck performed relatively well, though it needs a little trimming.
I, on the other hand, apparently have forgotten how to play the damn game. Between lack of familiarity with new rules (fuck you, Shroud, fuck you!) and wrestling with the interface, I'm surprised I lasted as long as I did.
Still, good game. I can totally see myself dropping $10 a month (maybe a smidge more) on this stupid game again.
Though really it's taking everything in me not to drop a few hundred bucks and start trying to play competitively.

I actually am having more fun with this than I've had fun with this game in a long time. Using weird cards is great

Oh god, that is an awesome idea. I wish that a) I'd seen it before I cracked my packs, b) I had enough time to play a sanctioned sealed event, and c) I knew enough about this set to be able to construct my deck in under an hour and a half. So many playable cards!!!
Taking over the Anything Goes section with you all tonight for some casual games was ridiculous fun. Oh god, the addiction, it's coming back...

It really truly is awesome. I think that's part of how I got burned out on Magic back in the day...it seemed like most of my decks wound up using the same small pool of power cards, and wound up being variations on a handful of themes. It got old. But I also didn't have the money to keep up on Type II, so I had to keep using the same old shit to be semi-competitive (and I really was only semi-competitive, mostly friendly tourneys with some local dudes and frequent friendly matches).
Of course, sometimes it was fun trying to find new and interesting ways to abuse a card, like my deck where I tried to see how many times I could play Balance in a single match (using a combination of tutors to bring it out quickly and an array of graveyard recycling)...it certainly wasn't a tourney deck, but damn it could be fun.
But here I'm seeing a certain allure in just hitting up the free cardbots and beefing up my common collection, then getting into some pauper. And commons do a wide enough array of crazy shit nowadays to keep that relatively interesting.
Grr so mad I can't unload enough to grab my packs with tickets. I'll have to wait til payday to get em since I spent more then I planned at wizardworld
