Convert PSD files to BMP

edited June 2009 in Help / Advice Forum
I have a coworker that's always sending me graphics files in a strange format called "PSD". I'd like to open these files and make some improvements, but paint says it can recognize the file type. Are these valid graphics files? If so, how can I get paint to open them?

I'm using Windows ME, if that matters.

    PSD is Photoshop Document.

You can use Gimp to open them if you don't have or don't want to pay for Photoshop, it's free.

:edit: Hmm, I don't know if gimp will work, it's Win2k and up...

:second edit: and paint.net is WinXP and up...

Tell your co-worker to merge all layers before saving the file. Or use the Save For Web option. If he's sending PSD files he certainly has Photoshop but doesn't know how to use it.

Don't let this bozo fool you, hes looking for justification on not opening photoshop, which we've installed on his machine so he can use, not so he can do his image editing in paint. :P

Help me brothers, to redeem this heathen, get him to give up his stoneage tools. At some point, one must shed light on the darkness, pull a friend out of the shadows. This is that day, I will help my brother man step away from the dark ages of time that was Paint, and step into the 21st century where he can edit his multi-layered graphics and create the best format for any particular output device without losing quality of his original.

oh, and gimp is cool, if you don't have photoshop already installed on your machine. (glares at foggrat) >_>

They don't pay me $75 an hour to open programs with strange sexual sounding names. You can close this thread, I talked to my boss, and I'm going to get all the files sent to me in BMP format from now on. He said he'd have the artist include the layers in the bitmap, so I can do any advanced editing needed.

I may not be the boss, but I'm still the sr developer, and I live in a 32 bit multilayered world!

    Conversation from this afternoon
Foggrat "I'd like your aesthetic advice"
Me "How about a transparent gradient coming from the top left"
Foggrat "Sounds good, but i don't know how to do that"
Me "it'll take 30 seconds to do in photoshop"
Foggrat "I don't have this photoshop"
Me "I installed it 3 months...sigh I have it open, here"
30 seconds later, not counting the CSS issues (glares more at foggrat >_>)

This is my life, photoshop b*tch for the company. sigh....

Not just that, apparently they're paying someone $75 an hour to do it.

Pay me $40 an hour and I'd be more than happy to use Photoshop. And upgrade from WinME.

Look, my uncle is in charge of the entire IT department, if he thinks I'm worth $75 an hour, I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing. I get things done just fine in paint, and I *could* upgrade from Windows ME, but all the newer operating systems have a lot of problems with viruses, so I stick with what works.

    seriously.

Human's did get where they are now by refusing to use the vastly superior tools in front of them. Don't let the species down.

Oh, I didn't realize it was your uncle in charge. That changes everything. Yeah, he probably knows what's up, being an uncle and all.

I definitely agree, Paint+WindowsME will save you from having to do a lot of things, like gradient transparencies and Windows updates. At $75 an hour, you really shouldn't be wasting any of your time on stuff like that anyways.

If you're insisting on using Windows ME and Paint in a job where part of your responsibilities include editing graphics, then you're being paid $75 to have someone else do your job because your uncle is the IT guy, and not because you have anything anywhere near approaching a fucking clue.

Then again, if I could make $75 an hour for being a slacker retard because of nepotism, I would probably do it, too.
