My aunt whom is very uncomfortable with technology just had a computer go belly up. She has very basic needs for a computer. VERY basic.
Since I live over one thousand miles away and cannot build her a computer, she will probably be buying a Dell (best thing I've found so far for computer+monitor). She needs a tech guy to either set up the Dell for her (yea, shes that uncomfortable), or maybe he can build one for her if the price is right.
This is a ridiculously easy job that I would handle if I were closer, but alas.

Great, I'll look into that.
I'll see what kind of laptop I can get her, but given that she'd want to use this thing for damn near a decade... my experience is a desktop is a bit more long lasting.

I'd say go the laptop route. Hell you could buy it yourself, set it up and then first class ship it to her.
With nice little touches like a family picture as the wallpaper heh.
But as you said, desktops tend to be longer lasting I suppose.
Laptops can last just as long if they are stationary.
They heat up more however, and heat can shorten the life of any part.
They can last longer yea, but I mean if he's really concerned about it lasting a good long while I'd just go with a desktop.
If she ever needs any help, after the 26th I'll be in Schaumburg. Just give me an IM on here and I'll see what I can do (with a little bit of a charge, of course).
For my cousin?
It's going to be dual booted (as in also a Windows partition). And besides, I've been talking to my cousin on and off to get a feel for what she does is she wants to use Linux.
My aunt has no desire to learn and therefor she won't progress using Windows, she'll just complain.

Also, for a basic needs computer, you honestly can't beat Dell with coupons/sales. No home-built computer will come close to cost or time savings.
Check slickdeals.net (specifically the hot deals forum) for Dell deals.
Edit: alternatively get her a cheap laptop (you can get them for around $300 new) and then there is nothing to set up.

Lock it away!
wait, she's uncomfortable setting up a pre-built pc but she is going to dual boot so as to have linux?
It is my current working theory that a dead simple UI given by some Linux distros will work out well for her.
except for when she goes to install iTunes, or AIM, or any other windows app and doesn't understand why it doesn't work.
