I'd like to know how to get my girlfriend into video games. She's still in High School, plays volleyball, and other than the sport, is a real girly girl (watches One Tree Hill, likes dumb movies like The Holiday). I've gotten her somewhat into the Red Sox (on accident), but I'm planning on getting married to her eventually, and would like to know good ways to get her interested
tips or stories about kickass gaming girls (the best kind of girl) appreciated
I play video games with my wife, and it's a lot of fun, but be warned, you'll probably always be more enthusiastic about gaming than she is.
One thing that makes my wife want to play is finding games that are cooperative, that way there's not winner or loser, it's just us trying to beat the game, not one another.
Games like LEGO Star Wars, Halo, and X-Men Legends have been great. She also likes Guitar Hero because, well, everybody that I've ever showed it to likes Guitar Hero.
2. If you're playing a game that can be two player and she's watching you even a little bit, invite her to play.
My husband and I played through Diablo together, Diablo 2, then moved on to MMORPGs together. All just because I got curious.
On the other hand, don't try to force it. If she doesn't like to play games at all, it might be best to try to just generate tolerance until her curiousity gets the best of her.
why exactly are you trying to "train" someone to like a hobby that doesn't interest them.
If you'd like to share your hobby with her as a way to spend time together, then maybe you can approach her from that angle and ask her to give a game a try, together with you. Then make sure you've got some beginner friendly fun games at hand.
This goes two ways though, if you want her to give one of your hobbies a tryin order to spend time together, you should be willing to try something she likes as well. Maybe offer a trade off.
That being said, an old fling of mine is crazy hot and games with the best of them, while my current GF just like shooting hookers in GTA.

My wife is the opposite. She thinks co-op mario kart is a waste of time. She'd rather be lapping me or kicking my ass in Soul Calibur
I think it's important to know what sort of girl she is. If she's competitive then she'll love games like Tekken or Soul Calibur or Mario Kart. If she likes puzzles like Sudoku then she'll love Tetris and Column Crowns and Meteos and Brain Training. If she likes dolls and soap operas then she'll love...The Sims. And maybe RPGs and MMOs as well (due to customisation options, storylines etc.). If she's a tomboy then she might be able to get into racing games like Gran Turismo or action arcade games like Halo or Gears Of War etc.
An overall feature of videogames is that they present a challenge. If she doesn't revel in challenges then videogames wont be for her, period. If she does revel in challenges, then beware. My wife periodically gets addicted to things like Sonic, Column Crowns and Trauma Center. And beating my ass in PvP games.
If you're looking for single-player games, most people (not just girls) can have a good time with a good sandbox game. Roller Coaster Tycoon (the first one and its 2 expansions are the one I play) are good and will run on just about any PC.
Also, most people are able to get into The Sims or SimTower (since it's a little easier to figure out than a SimCity).
If you're looking for competition, arcade racers are great. My wife and I play both Mario Kart and Jak X together, and they're both a good time. I think the key is that it doesn't matter if you get hit with a missile; they're still a good chance you'll come in first.
Also, if you're into MMOs, my wife loves and got me hooked on Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates, which is not only full of puzzle-y goodness, but it can be played for feee.
Lego Star Wars. If you and your girlfriend can't get into this game, then you should reconsider your relationship. My "I hate video games" girlfriend LOVED to play this game with me.
What's the policy on emulator discussion here? Cause... that's another possible good route.
I played GoW with my one of my friends the other day. She was so bad. It was like I was in the middle of a war, but had to baby sit someone's little kid at the same time. Still had fun though.

My girlfriend plays videogames with me on the condition I do stuff that she likes. I don't play many games with her unless they're party games with a bunch of friends. [spoiler:09f3d60240]I still have to do the things she likes though[/spoiler:09f3d60240]
She'll either like games or she wont. Break out the party games first though. Those easy types of racers with the crazy physics... maybe a fighter like soul caliber. Start it off as something you two do together for fun sometimes.
It might grow from there - if she shows interest in more, just keep giving her the easy games. Don't forget, that's how we all started. If she gets hooked on them, she'll start getting into the more robust games on her own, without further cajooling(sp?)

Yes. Guitar Hero. Even people who don't like video games in general can and will like Guitar Hero. I particularily recommend Guitar Hero II, the co-op play mode added in the second one is especially awesome for getting someone into it for the first time. You can play along with them, on a different difficulty setting if you like, and the two of you have to work together to keep your note streak going and your score multiplier up. Having a really good stretch where you both hit every note is immensely satisfying, and there's no "winner" or "loser." My girlfriend is hooked on Guitar Hero. I got my mom to play Guitar Hero, and she had a really good time.
My girlfriend sucks at racing games, yet she loves Burnout. She still avoids the racing mode, I do those, but the crash mode essentially belongs to her and her sister. They get mad at me when I play crash levels without them.
Get a second Wiimote if you don't have one already, and see if you can get your girlfriend to play some Wii Tennis. Better yet, have a gaming get-together and get four Wiimotes, either by buying them or inviting over others who have Wiimotes of their own. My girlfriend and I did this earlier this week, it was a hell of a good time. Just be sure to enforce strict wrist-strap discipline if it's a drinking event, booze plus Wii Tennis can lead to danger otherwise. I speak from experience here.
In general, you're going to want to look for games that embody the principles above:
- multiplay, or better yet co-operative play (co-op in GH2, taking turns trying to gold-star crash levels in Burnout, doubles Wii Tennis)
- subject matter that won't turn off your girlfriend, which most likely means no huge guns, no magic swords
- capacity to change it into a social event / experience
You have to recognize, however, that it's unlikely you'll ever get to the point where you're playing CounterStrike with your girlfriend. If that subject matter doesn't appeal to her now, it's unlikely that's going to change in the future. You would probably do well to accept that up front, and focus on looking for games that do appeal to both you and her.
she refuses to try them because she hates them so much
there is no hope for that woman
Get a Wii?
I did. She refuses to try it. I think it's because she think she might like it and that's the path to the dark side
Its probably the principle at this point. Try to catch her playing solitaire or something or leave the room with the game on when she's around. Make sure to get it on camera.

Yup, definitely just sounds stubborn. I don't understand how people don't like video games.
Almost two years ago I met this girl who was a mutual friend of a friend. We started talking on AIM and eventually in real life and we really connected. Her favorite song was also mine: "Everlong" by the Foo Fighters. This seemed like more than coincidence, so I decided to pursue this one. At this point I was pretty into her, and one day we went over to her house after school to hang out, 420, swim, etc. It was then that I walked into her room and saw it: SNES A Link To The Past sitting in front of her TV. When the disbelief wore off, I felt like a pretty lucky guy. A good looking girl that plays videogames. I wasn't sure such a thing existed. And we've been together ever since.

LOL! that's funny, because "SNES A Link To The Past" kind of sums up how my video gaming is viewed by my wife. The SNES is like my umbilical cord
Just establish a trade off system. You want her to try something you really enjoy, so try something she really enjoys. Even if her activity is something you're afraid will threaten your sacrosanct manhood. But make sure that you make it fun for her (see: the millions of good game suggestions in this very thread) so it stops being something that you need a system for and becomes a fun activity for you to bond over.
tell her you'll watch the notebook with her if she plays some games with you.
it's how I got my GF to watch LOTR with me. Now she loves it.

I had an old gf that played DAoC with me. She was also into the Tony Hawk series, and Square games like Vagrant Story and Parasite Eve. Didn't work out with her but...
Met my last gf playing DAoC. She then played WoW with me.
After I dumped her ass, I got together with another girl who loves the Sims, Kingdom Hearts, begged me to buy her a DS for xmas (Nintendogs fool!), and plays GoW co-op with me so she can 'chainsaw a bitch.' She also loves watching me play Oblivion. She usually sits on the couch with me playing Sims on her laptop while I play the 360. She also fetches me beers as we have a wall-mounted bottle opener that she likes to use. I heart this girl.
I have a knack for finding gamer girls I guess.
She refuses WoW though, as it is the debil. Good girl.
Girls are people too. Finding a game doesn't depend so much her gender as her personality. Go to a store, and tell her to pick out things that interest her? :P Give her a DS of her own, and a stack of games? Has she played any in the past? People usually say they haven't, but might have done some Tetris, Mario, etc...
My girlfriend and I sat in bed many a Saturday mornings and played a couple hours of Pokemon on my laptop. She's also a pretty good Halo 2 player, and liked to watch me play FFXII because she likes the story. She's played Kingdom Hearts and stuff and can't wait to try Gears of War with me at X-Mas when she buys me a 360.

I also agree with Guitar Hero. My ex played that game with me, when she wouldn't do much of anything else I liked (out of spite...i hate those type people).

I don't really have any stories about my gamer girlfriend, she's just pretty cool.
and sorry about the topic placement, although I joined last year, I've barely posted on here

policy is zero tolerance
Of course, I'm not allowed to use voldo, because he's "a creep".
Also, she LOVES Burnout Revenge and anything with mario in it.
Currently playing: Infamous, Resident Evil 5
Need to play: Shadow Complex, Uncharted 2, Ratchet and Clank: ACIT, MW2, Alpha Protocol

I've also had sucess with the aforementioned Kingdom Hearts and, strangely enough, The Battle for Middle Earth 2 more recently.
Haa!
me too.

Pokémon PC game? Is it just a port of one of the handheld or console games?
A ROM.
