I strongly discourage people from paying for a lifetime sub for any MMO, ever. It is MMO POISON. MMO's exist to charge monthly subscription fees, not to sell lifetime subs. Every single person with a lifetime sub is a permanent drain on community and future updates.
Then ENTIRE reason for MMO's to exist is to create subscription through content updates, patches, bugfixes, etc. BY purchasing a lifetime sub you remove any and all incentive to ever do that. Your voice becomes mute, you no longer have any sway with the company. You can't take back your sub. In fact their ideal scenario is for you to STOP PLAYING. Anytime you play you are just costing them bandwidth and using up resources.
The ONLY people who the company will care about are monthtly subscribers. They have to fight to retain them. If they stop providing updates they lose their money. If they release a bad patch people will quit and they will lose money. All the updates that happen are ONLY for these people, so they can get their money. You want to be one of these people. You actually have a voice.
Don't buy a lifetime sub if you like a game, all you are doing is ruining it.
The one difference is Champions has MTs -- so they still have incentive to make stuff that appeals to their lifetime subscribers

There are a lot of people who don't play MMOs for extended periods of time, or who just play and stop and play and stop perodically. I, for instance, am not going to play an MMO for longer than 6 months at a time, ever, but if I had nothing better to spend my money on than being able to return to an MMO whenever I wanted for the roughly 5 years I would assume it'll last, it wouldn't be a terrible choice.
But cell phone companies do offer unlimited minute plans ...why when most of their profits come from people that go over their minutes on their limited plans.

Money in Cryptics account can be put into improving the game with more development and help develop other projects.
If the money upfront improves the product it may draw in even more monthly subscribers which in turn makes the game have more longevity.

I think between the lifetime subscriptions and the 6 month sub sales the game will be fine for easily 18+ months.

What is the resub rate for the average MMO after the first month, or 6, or a year? (honest question, honestly)
'Cause I'm pretty sure the lifetime sub price isn't based on what they expect diehard gamers like us to pay, but rather based on the expected mean(average) of how much thier player base is going to pay on subs.
I know most MMOs lose a rather large portion of thier base after the free 30 days/ 1 month sub, and if they can convince more of the people who would have quit anyway after a year or less(even if this game is teh awesome) to pay a lifetime sub, they have made a profit.
P.S. I'm 90% sure I'm not getting a lifetime sub, so don't think your talking to a brick wall

News isn't updated yet but there should be a playtest tomorrow. I recommend you download and patch the client in the meantime.

King Mole is 100% absolutely right as to why they are offering it. They real reason they offer it because they are completely broke and need money badly. It's the same reason Hellgate offered it.
